BTW, the director wasn't (obviously!) killed because he made this movie!!! He was a very famous and "dangerous" journalist (and writer), he discovered and denounced a lot of corruption, even at an international level ('mysterious' Italian corporations being allied with 'mysterious' American corporations). Why mentioning his death (a great loss for Italian information and literature) in the review of this movie? It's totally disrespectful, if not out of context...

Have you actually understood the movie? One of the 'bad guys' says that "the true anarchy is power, because if you have power you can do whathever you want with whoever you want". This movie depicts the structure of power as imposed on people's bodies and how people become manipulated: they even betray other people to please the men of power, who force them to eat shit and, at the end, kill them! Does it sound similar, metaphorically, to the world and how it is nowadays?

Someone has not appreciated the critic of contemporary society, the egocentric main characters, the satire of Italian society back in the 1970's (and generally after WWII)... It is, possibly, one of the three most debated movies of all time, even though it would, mostly, be in Europe, but also in the US (after all, the criticism of mass consumption and the sell-off of such prized notions such as the human body did ring some bells in the US...). In short, someone has not come across the beef...

I never seen this movie, but I grew up watching a lot violent, horrorific movies Civil Rights and The Holocaust. I agree that we can tell stories of the past, but you cannot overdue it.

Honestly I didn't like this film due to the sex and violence; it was just dull. To me it seemed like a film made to shock for the sake of shocking; it was plot less with no depth to it.

The director actually didn't change much other than the years of this happening. The ideas came from the fucked up mind of Marque. And about the poop eating scene well.. The movie is based on a book by Marquis de Sade, who basically wrote it for his own arousal. The movie is not about "what happened back in those days." ("Those days," by the way, was Facist Italy during World War II. At least in the film). It's a movie about excess. Excess power, wealth, and depravity.

But I am not necessarily defending the movie. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who would watch the film casually, because it's not meant to be watched casually.
