well you usually want to do them slow. When I'm warming up for exercise I do them quickly to stretch muscle tissue. I use warmup sets of exercises to stretch the tendons and ligaments. Muscles stretch much faster than ligaments so depending on what you are stretching for you may want to hold it for 30 seconds or 4 minutes. Never stretch to horrible horrrible pain unless you know what youre doing.
Thank you for your comment. PNF strengthens in only small degree of the movement, while ELC strengthens large part of the movement, inlcuding the extreme range, which becomes deeper as flexibility increases.

For some reason this improves the stretch.

No1. Which exercise? N02. Intensity of the exercises dictates how often. More intense - less often.

You will strengthen your adductors. Combined with stretching, you will be on your way to side split.
