Have always loved this song. One of my favorites of Leonard Cohen's. Just recently heard that 'did you ever come clear' is a Scientology term. Knowing LC, there are probably many layers of meaning but he would have been aware of the Scientology connotations. Interesting
@1953streeky go watch those good-looking bimbo-singers if this Man's appearance insulted your aesthetic senses. I guess i'd rather listen to good music played by uggly people than going for bad music played by beautiful ppl. But that's just me...
Thank you Jules, for uploading this on my birthday. I've listened to Mr. Cohen since the age of 17 (nearly 40 years now) and this is the first live version of 'Famous Blue Raincoat' I've listened to. Blew me away, it what it did! The music world will be missing a vibrant note or two when Leonard is no longer with us.
I have had the privilege to be there, among the silenced audience at both concerts in Bucharest. The first one was exactly on his 74th birthday. Mr. Cohen was... breathtaking. His musicians were amazing, fantastic (and beautiful) backing vocals, so "if you ever come by" a concert of Mr. Cohen don't miss it. You'll be forever changed. I'd sell my soul to see the next live performance of Mr. Cohen
I'm 73 years old and just, by chance, found this man on You Tube tonight. Where have I been. This man is 76 and still performing his work. He is AMAZING.
@rozzie8937 I'm so glad you found him and so chuffed it was this video that introduced you to this incredible man. I adore him and of course I'm by no means alone! I hope you will listen to more - he's absolutely my favourite artist in the whole world!
@rozzie8937 ....and definetely you should try to listen a concert of him. I saw him twice - in 1982 and in 2010. Both concerts I'll never forget......................
@rozzie8937 Too right, and he gets better with age. But his older vids are definitely worth a look. I've had an intermitten love affair with this man for 40 years....just don't think he's noticed. :-)
@rozzie8937 mira,yo soy de hace 20 años y lo conoci por la television.vaya reportges de la epoca ,junto a los rolling stones. todo junto puro marqueting .pero ahora hemos descubuerto un verdadero poeta. casi como BOB DYLAN
This is going to probably sound stupid but if it wasn't for Kurt Cobain and Tori Amos I wouldn't have a clue who Leonard Cohen is at all. I really like his music and I'm glad he influenced a few artists i enjoy as well.
Wolfgang Niedecken of famous German band "BAP" translated this into "Kölsch", the dialect of Cologne. I just love both the English and the Kölsch version. Great song!
WOW, Leonard Cohen, es increible, es el mejor musico de folk y blues que he podido encontrar, sus canciones las canta con tanto sentimiento, es de vdd un maestro, mis repetos para el señor cohen, It is my favorite song, I hope someday to be in a cohen concert, would be very happy, I do not speak English but by cohen I am learning.
Saw him in Manchester performing this ... its a letter written to his friend.. who had an affair with his wife...words say it all..LC saw the 'trouble in her eyes ..but never tried to help ..his friend helped her and gave her 'a lock of his hair perhaps as a token of love and intention to go clear of drugs?..' :he thanks him ..but knows when she returned she was no longer his ...or anyones wife..hence a letter at four in the morning...
Least that's how I see it.!..Leonard is legendary.
Oh really, thanks for the info. Ive been wondrin bout this song for quite some time now. I 1st heard the Joan Baez version and I love it. Sad song but remarkable. You're right, Leonard Cohen is legendary.
Cohen seems to have learned more about his songs during his time in meditation. Until I saw him perform this last year, it never occurred to me to hear "I"m glad you stood in my way" as "I'm glad you stood in my path", that is, "I'm glad to have encountered you". I don't think he heard it that way ten years ago, either.
It seems to be very vague. I think it involves a love triangle between the singer and the two names mentioned. It seemed that the singers wife left him for another man. But like I say it's very vague.
It is written in the form of a letter written to a man who is clearly also in love with same woman as him but neither of them get the girl in the end. Whether the song is factual or not is debated.
I recently heard an interview on Fresh Air (accessible online) in which he claims the song was simply inspired by a raincoat he once owned. Check the interview out; it's very cool.
I saw him at Manchester two weeks ago, in a different league to anything I've ever seen before. He walked on stage and for three hours held the audience in raptures. When he recited his poem "A Thousand Kisses Deep" I thought the roof was going to come down. There's talent and there's Leonard, head, shoulders and an entire set of ladders above the rest.
Fantastic video, I saw him in Manchester this year, what an astonishing man...his music, lyrics and poetry is so emotive, so heart felt, at the concert you could hear a pin drop between the quiet parts when he sang this, the audience were silent..
I have listened to Leonard since the early seventies... his humility is second to none....Thank you Leonard for your music...thankyou for a great video

It is about his message as a Mystic and a visionary....
He has wisdom and desire to share it through his music. Don't focus on his body,
focus on what he has to say and process that -- it is through the mystery that we
find our freedom.
