The issue here is about JM's role in recognising the reality of the phenomena and paving the way for the scientific establishment to take it seriously.Its easy to dismiss the experiencers as 'deluded' or mentally ill.He wasn't prepared to do that as many of the people he dealt with simply did not fit the criteria of deluded etc.

The subject remains and enigma but that does not imply it should be dismissed or ridiculed.

He was also a pioneer for true academic freedom.

Mack was changing world perception of the ET question single handedly. At no other time has there ever been such a great academic exposing this reality to the world. He was deemed a threat because he garnered the sort of scientific support that cracks secret societies wide open to the public.
