  • Was this calculated down to 3ft of clearance or were they shitting themselves on the bridge and hoping not to hear grinding metal?

  • I've been under that bridge aswell.

    PS I friggen LOVE VERTIGO!!!

  • I live next by the Turkus Shipyard.Allure of the seas will be leaving in a week :D

  • IM SO PROUD To live in Turku.Actually i live next to the allure of the seas :D.

  • Thank goodness that this is America and people still have a right to their own opinions, right? However, if people didn't dare to dream big we would still be living in the 1800's. Have you ever flown on an airplane? Used electricity? Enjoyed your computer???? All of these things exsist because of peoples whims and dreams. The human imagination is limitless, who is to say that one persons dream is too big? I don't have a problem with it at all actually, I just got back from a cruise 5 days ago;)

  • We get it.. its unbelieveable

  • I like the Oasis of the seas xD

  • i wanna go there

  • Please do NOT mess with our bridge, or we shall be pissed off! LOL

  • I can hear some Filipinos on board. "ang lapit lang oh!" (it is very close).

  • The distance sorry

  • +5 great moment.. You're very lucky !

But you've forgotten to say that the captain, put the boat on his maximum speed for the boat "sinking a little bit" in the water to put up the chance that the boat pass under without any problem, fear, or little damages.

Do anyone know the exactly distce between the chimneys and the bridge during the pass ?

  • the distance was a little under 60cm

  • they need a new bridge for the next one

  • ye lol, he is so luchy to be there;;

  • i wonder if it can fit under the golden gate bridge ?

  • Should fit, as the clearance under the Golden Gate bridge is two meters more than that of the Great Belt bridge.

  • @tupsumato

But apart from that the GGB is dwarfed by this bridge by a good margin

    ( a good 400meters wider span -

    1 mile+ ! )

  • So? There was plenty of space around the ship under the Great Belt Bridge as well, so it doesn't really matter how much the span is.

  • Yes it can. Great Belt Bridge has a clearence to the water of 65 meter. GGB has 67 meter - so yes.

  • man!! what a tight squeeze!

  • Oasis has elevating Funnels that allow her to travel under some bridges im pretty sure :).If you look closely at some different pictures of Oasis, you can tell that her Funnels are elevated at a certant pitch.

  • @CruiseShipMaster True, they are telescopical.

  • Thanks :)

  • filling the ballast tanks would also help to lover the ship

  • That is a nice bridge!!!

Vehicles driving on a "high"way 65 meter above waterline, that is truly amazing: How is that even possible

  • the woman who is shouting distracts me.... Let scream XD .. lol

  • Better luck next time.

  • that was awesome was that a clearance of a foot ? great video

  • thats close

  • That was amazing. Thanks for the video!

  • Thanks to the Squat-effect this worked out!

  • high five to the captain.

  • actually oasis of the seas is 72m high and allure of the seas is 75m high

  • I will probably be on that one too! For now I'm trying to get my land legs back! I've had vertigo for 3 days since getting off the ship.

  • I don't know the stats, but you have to decide what your measuring when you say "largest in the world" because gross by gross tonnage, I think that this is even bigger than those supertankers.

  • @JustShaamIt -"the largest cruise ship in history"

  • based of what fact? link me reference since it is hard to believe anything taller is going to fit thro the Great Belt Bridge...

And all finnish information sites I have gone through now show the size, capacity and weight be 100% identical to oasis.

With the exception of english wikipedia that shows it to be smaller and that is incorrect information.

  • that was mighty close though!!

  • All i can say is that this will be a legend!!!!! I wish i was there witnessing this amazing event!!! ;D

  • jäi viel tilaakin vaikka toiselle samanmoiselle :)

  • Hey I might be wrong but I think your video was shown in the news here in Finland. :D

Btw they're making a new bigger boat in Turku..

  • allure of the seas is not bigger, it is sister ship to this one, but smaller

  • oh okay.

  • they are identical in size

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks very much for sharing this video. I've been watching this ship since she took off. Was wondering how it must have felt to be aboard for this big event. Now I know.

  • my sister is there in that boat .. and also was watching the boat to cross the bridge =)

  • The bridge has a clearance of 65 metres (213 ft) above the water; Oasis normally has an air draft of 72 metres (236 ft). The passage under the bridge was possible due to retraction of the telescoping funnels, and an additional 30 centimetres (12 in) was gained by the squat effect whereby vessels travelling at speed in a shallow channel will be drawn deeper into the water. Approaching the bridge at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph), the ship passed under it with less than 2 feet (0.61 m) of clearance.

  • There were only 61 cm space between the boat and the bridge? :O For real? Wow, unbelievable.

  • on captain's log day 3 the captain said it to be 30 centimeters but I doubt anyone was upt there to measure it.

    All in all

    ship = 72 meters tall

bridge= 65 meters tall from sea level

They ran under the bridge with full speed so that the ship went deeper in the water to make it fit under the bridge

  • Yeah! And to think about they actually had this special feature where the chimneys could be lovered for sailing under the bridge!

  • There is also a video on Royal Caribbeans site dedicated to Oasis of the Seas that is shot from the funnel as she passes under. Very impressive.

  • It's because of this ship that i want to work for Royal Caribbean when i graduate college!

  • lol working for cruise lines suck

  • Lucky people, what an adventure. I would love to be a chef on that boat, sweet job ^-_-^

  • Comment removed

  • wow - sweet gig

    are you staff?

when we make the Fort Lauderdale trek will you be on it?

The husby and I always cruise

it's the best ticket in town

except for the extra 5 pounds you pack on during the week :-)

  • I'm a chef for Alto-Shaam, a company with lots of equipment on this ship... my partner and I are training the entire culinary team to use our equipment to make better food and make life easier in the kitchen!

  • you're traveling to Ft Lauderdale across the Atlantic?

how much did that ticket run you?

  • There are no passengers on this voyage, we are only bringing the ship to the US for delivery!

  • isnt that a hard ride because the ship wasnt built for a transatlantic.....or was it?

  • We have been taking it slow in the north Atlantic because of some major 40 foot swells, but we are now in slightly calmer seas and moving along quite nicely. The captain has said that the ship has handled all the north Atlantic can dish out and has plenty to spare and that the ship is handling superbly. That doesn't mean that we're not experiencing our fair share of scary bumps and tilts... but that's always going to happen when you're on the open ocean like this.

  • wow...impressive..

  • 50 cm between top of a ship and bottom of the bridge... impressive ... O_O

  • I was standing on that bridge while it passed, I took a leak. I never saw it coming...

    Sorry.

  • I thought it was raining! Thanks a lot!

  • Have you been to a football stadium anywhere in the world?

  • i think during the passage the C/E was reading mickey mouse in the engine controll room

  • You have to know how much does the prices cost !

  • that is a housenumber^^

  • awesome !

    VIVA la "squadeffect" ;)

  • the magic word is squat

  • is it new, i mean the ship ?

  • Yes, largest cruise ship in history. Room for over 6000 passengers and 3k crew.

  • The smokestack was build so they could decrease the lenght. When they decresed the smokestack would the ship be able to pass trow with 15 cm left. The captain also incread 15 cm more with going with full speed. So they would have 30 cm to pass.

  • Even this short clip gives off the excitement onbaord the Oasis. A true 1 of a kind experience to be had as it will never be making that jouney again. You're a lucky man to be onbaord for it's maiden journey! Thanks for sharing!!!

  • It's amazing and SO &"%"%"#¤" HUGE(i was onbord while it was being built), it's hard go grasp how mindboggling big this ship is!!!! :D

I'm also amazed on how fast we build big ships today! Seriously.. enjoy the ride! If I grow up I'm going to live on this boat a few days! :-P

  • they spell words funny in denmark. they need to switch to englush

  • It's not Oresund Bridge - but Great belt bridge

  • Hope we don't get another Titanic...... This ship is going to the Pacific ocean... (The Caribbean) there might be even pirates trying to capture this ship! ;(

  • Hate to break the news to you and corrct you Hero, but the Caribbean, unless they moved it without anyone telling me, is actually indeed in the ATLANTIC ocean, not the Pacific !!!!!!!!!!!

  • @StopTheMorons Super rich? Please!! I'm a stay at home mom of a family of five and my husband is a bluecollar worker. We work very hard and make sacrifices so that we can save enough money to take out family on cruises.

Have you ever heard of Free Enterprise? It's what makes America great. I'm so glad that we have the opportunity to work hard and enjoy experiences like going on a cruise so our children can learn to dream big! Thank heavens for people who make something like this possible

  • @cruizinbaby Eleven months ago I called it "a pig of a ship" and I stand by that. Super rich or not--it's build on a human whim! Whims, whims, whims!!! A normal reasonable-sized ship is just as good for taking your vacation, if you don't like it, then why don't you "stay at home mom".

  • FANTASTIC VIDEO!! Thank you very much for sharing this with us poor landlocked slobs. Great, just great!

    Enjoy the trip.

  • wow, you seriously have an attitude problem, first of all get that chip off your shoulder, second, Royal Caribbean paid for this ship, not our tax dollars. You also sound like a completely uneducated moron using that kind of language, and if you want to go on this ship, get a JOB and pay for your own cruise!

  • i just listen to the video and i hear tang ina ang lapit lang ohhh.. there is a filipino in the ship while passing the bridge...

    FILIPINO POWER>>>

  • There's Filipinos on every ship because they are the cheapest seamen to hire.

  • Is it employees only on the trip to Florida?

  • But yeah, it's the Great Belt Bridge between the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen you went under. Had you tried going through Oresund the ship would have run aground...

  • Also, you would have crashed into the Oresund bridge because it has lower clearance.

  • i want on this cruise

  • lmao

  • Amazing moment!

  • Next time we're going to send a missile boat ahead to take out any "obstacles" ;)

I don't think there's any need to do anything for the bridge. It has now been proven that a ship as big as Oasis of the Seas fits under them, and that's as big as ships built in Finland will ever get.

  • But Finland used to build offshore platforms up to 170 meter which can't pass under the bridge.

  • Hmm... was that the final height after the platform had been installed on site or the height of the transportation? I've seen some pictures of those things being transported sideways on a semi-submersible ship...

  • Well done!!!! thank you so much for letting us keep our bridge in good condition : - )

Great journey and all the best to everybody on Oasis of the seas

  • This was arguably one of the few instances of the 'squat effect' put to good use. Well done!

  • More like a "pucker your asshole" effect lol yeah I'd be on super pucker status if i was on the roof.

  • If the bridge was closed, one reason could be the danger of distraction of car drivers.

  • looks like a few dead pixels in the camera

  • It's the Great Belt bridge, not the Øresund bridge. The Øresund bridgeisn't even a suspension bridge!

  • Very cool. For those wondering about the screaming - I've been on a big cruise ship going under a big bridge with a 'tight fit'. It's very exciting yet nerve-wracking to be on a vehicle that is THAT close to coming into contact with another huge structure. This being the maiden voyage for this enormous ship, I can see how people were quite excited. I bet you could hear a pin drop on the navigation deck, though. :-)

  • Wow... very cool video. Were they allowing vehicles to cross the bridge when the Oasis went underneath? You know, just in case.

  • No, the bridge was closed (:

  • Ship is 72 meters tall, bridge is 65 meters tall.

The way they managed to pass under it was, low tide, full throttle speed and telescopic chimmneys. The chimmneys will now be replaced by ordenary chimmneys.

  • Screaming was about the fact that the ship is 72 meters high and the bridge was 65 meters high.

so the ship increased to maximum speed to get it sink deeper to make it possible to fit under, what I heard was that collision wasn't too far away

  • they made it by less than 2 feet lol

  • wtf with the screaming?

  • he he..must be embarrysing to see all the comments being about the wrong facts...he might be jetlagged by the speed..:D

  • wow!!!!

But mate as all the comments already have been said: IT WASD THE GREAT BELT - between Funen and Sealand. Get the facts right, dude :-)

    That captain got balls

  • Wow. That's not much of a margin. Well done ;D

  • Denmark must build higher bridges, otherwise Finland cant deliever bigger ships...

  • Yes, I'm from Demnark too, and it WAS the "Storebaelts Bridge".

    Not the "Oresund Bridge"....

    But nice video.

I own a boat, and I know how it looks when i am approaching a bridge that only is 1.5m higher than my boat.

    Scary!

And this is so big, it must have been wery scary. ;o)

  • My Dear friend i" m from Denmark. It wasn`t the Oresund - bridge between Denmark and Sweden, it was the Storebaelts bridge between Sjaelland and Fyn in Denmark.

Nice Pictures by the way! Amacing to watch!!!!

  • Could have been fun if they had actually gone to Øresund instead of Storebælt.. .

Hopefully the uploader will edit the description match the facts :)

  • An interesting video. Greetings.

  • This is the Great Belt bridge, NOT the Øresund bridge!

    It's the World's 2'nd longest suspension

    bridge -- or 3'rd now ? - and it totally dwarfs the Golden Gate Bridge with its 1624 m span ( 1 mile+ !) vs. ca. 1200 m.

  • that capten got some balls, that chimney costed 2 million dollars to build

  • Not Oresundsbridge but the 'Storebaelts-bridge. Please remember. Poulboy

  • What have they done if they realized they wouldnt make it, kept the the ship cursing the Baltic Sea o0r put it on a trailer???? :-) :-)

  • Thats why the went full speed when they tried ;)

  • Looking forward for the next, bigger ship then! (1 extra meter would do it) :-)

  • It didn't pass under Oresund bridge, but under Storebaelt Bridge.

  • HAhahhaa Dude!!!!

    Awesome video!!!

But seriously, change the name of the video... There is NOTHING whatsoever Oresundsbroish over this bridge. It' is The Storebaelts Bridge.

  • kovin paljon suurempaa ei pysty suomessa enää tekemään :)

  • So close... damn... was crazy:)

    Great vid mate!

  • Thanks for the film. It was great to see. How ever you will get more hits i you write the correct bridge in the title.

For those of you who ask why they didnt go under the Oresund bidge instead: it's clearence below is not high enough.

The Oresunds bridge (Öresundsbron) has a clearance below of 57 metres (187 ft), The Great Belt Bridge (Stora bältbron) has a clearance below of 65 metres (213 ft).

  • First of all, it wasn't the Oresund bridge, but the Storebaelt between Zealand and Funen. The reason for not crossing the tunnel part of Oresund, is because it is not deep enough.

  • zealan =sjælland and funen = fyn (you dont translat name on city or part off a country

  • Yes, actually you do. Milano is Milan in English and København is Copenhagen. Also it is 'part OF a country', not off. But nice try.

  • Piece of Finnish quality work

  • What was the reason for not just going over the tunnel part of the Oresund link istead of going under the stora bält bridge? Then they wouldn't have needed the retractable chimney and everything? Is it not deep enough?

  • It is not deep enough as far as I know. That ship needs a bit over 9 meters of water as minimum.

  • yes, not deep enough

  • That's what she said.

  • Captain drove with full throttle, cause the ships goes lower. Distance were approx. 30 centimeter between the pipe and the bridge.

  • I see you read the article in Aftonbladet, right? Well, the thing is: The ship is 64.85 Meters with retracted chimney. The bridge is specified to be 65 meters, but that is of course with some margin for errors! And, the specified bridge height is from water level att flood, and last night it was ebb. The REAL distance where 2-3 meters.

  • Kyllä Suomalainen Teknikko osaa hommansa ... niin hyvin näytti menevän....

  • thanks alot for sharing that fantastic video, seems there were only some inch space to the bridge. regards dieter

  • Storebaeltsbroen connects the two Danish islands Zealand and Funen.

  • 1:05 O_0

  • thanks for posting this. Now that the sun is up please send us another video

  • it made one boat length in 30 seconds which by my figurin is 24 miles per hour

  • Great event...About the title, is it really true that you can go on a beautiful cruise, not knowing where you are? Öresund has a free passage of 55 m. so I guess it was never considered...:)Storebælt was the bridge! Have a nice time.

  • Swell!!!

  • They usually have it on full speed, also they wait untill the wind and tide is right. If I remember right there isn't that mutch water under the ship either. So it's a thigh fight from below and above.

  • judging by all the hysterical screams, it sounds like there are many americans! :o)

  • There is more screams than it were when the former world's biggest ship Titanic sank.

  • Titanic and her sisters were the world's biggest ships only for a year or so...

  • Great beltbridge. Hope you all enjoy your trip to Florida and your season on board this winter. Hope to be able to go on another cruise soon... Had such a great time on Freedom in February... Can't wait to go on a cruise with Oasis.

  • That was close! I guess they used that high speed to gain some extra inches of margin.

  • This is Stora bältbron, not Öresundsbron. Lovely event though!
