Sarah was sensational, the kind of voice that only comes around a few times in a hundred years. She sang from a baritone range all the way up into Soprano with a three lung tank of air to phrase every word perfectly. Ella Fitzgerald did it all as well as the first lady of song. Her scatting was only matched by Mel Torme. These two ladies were in a class by themselves

Sarah Vaughan is just really wide. she can sing alto AND soprano :)

@cmelmoneyman, She's a contralto, yes. All the voice types cross over, so some of her higher notes would also be in the soprano range.

@cmelmoneyman The genius of Sarah Vaughn was how her voice was truly a musical instrument on top of being a superhuman vocal instrument. Check out videos of "Sassy" from circa 1950 and hear a completely different instrument. Then find a video from each decade of her career; you'll find that Sarah Vaughn brought renewal and artistry to every change in her range and timbre throughout her career. She was simply amazing. Truly, she was a giant of jazz and American music in total.

Fabulous, awesome. Any new artist who thinks they can just jump in and sing jazz - you got to get this easy feeling. I've hooked my laptop into my TV and this sounds great. Tenderly is such a hard song to swing into from Misty. Wow. God bless your immortal soul lady Sarah Vaughan.
