@CRF2eR ? I'm just glad you aren't flying in my country, it's idiots like you who tarnish public opinion of ultralights and light aircraft and fuel calls for them to be banned from operating from all but the most remote airstrips, because 'clearly' if one person does it everyone does.. At least if the engine fails, you hit a downdraft or for gods sake you have a slight twitch in your arm muscle you will be the only one suffering. Stuff like this could land you jail time in Australia....
Looks like fun. For those of you who object, don't do this. It's pretty common for bush pilots but it's obviously a bit unique for the pavement only types. I see nothing illegal or dangerous. Good short strip technique that could be handy someday. Keep practicing.
Im sure it isnt all that dangerious if done right (And it does look fun), but it definitely gives anti-GA activists plenty of ammunition. Please dont do that in a public area...for the sake of pilots everywhere. This is the type of stuff that the FAA gives us a headache over.
LOL love it ! you know what youre doing I can tell , evryone else , dont try this at home!from ex crop duster ,retired, happy landings my freind, no bird soars to high if soars with his own wings.
man thats cool! Just as much how you were flying and turning it seems like an RC plane! It reminds me of how small and fun planes can be nice work and what kind of plane is that?
What happens when you hit a downdraft or a high wave and you nose over? Iam not saying you weren't in absolute control. If anything bad were to happen it would definitely be due to circumstances outside of your control. But it's when non-flying lawmakers see things like this we have to worry about bills like H.R 5900 being put into action. Great control though!
ok, maybe its an unnecessary risk but it does look fun. it shouldn't be anyone's place (including local pigs) to tell you that you can't do it if you're not putting anyone else at risk. what is with people? when did it become common place for these finger-wagging assholes to tell everybody what kind of personal risks they are "allowed" to take?
Great job! That's something I've wanted to try, but I just don't have the balls (or insurance) to do! Thanks for sharing! Granted, there are going to be folks against this and tell you to stop on here. Don't knock a ROTAX !
That's freaking cool, have you been in the drink yet? Watch my other favorite where the guy goes in. Pretty funny. Hat's off to you for taking the small risk just for us spectators. I appreciate you doing that for me to watch. You are one heck of a guy to be so unselfish as to do this for other's entertainment. We have no risk, we didn't pay for the equipment, we don't have to pay to haul it out if you screw up. Thank you much for your donation of time and effort merely for us!
This is perfectly safe if you know what you're doin' and this pilot do seem compotent enough by the look of it. Sometimes things look very dangerous when doin' it with a plane, but then it is not and sometimes the things that looks very easy and safe to do, are the dangerous ones. Great flyin mate and the only thing wrong with this is that some people think this is dangerous, like the local copper.
Well, the video is dramatic to say the least. Looks safe enough, there are a couple of instances when the plane seems to bounce on the water surface. I wouldn't do it myself nor recomend any one else try it.
Please, listen to quickflier679 and don't do it again. I normally would let people do what they want to do, but I could easily see your engine failing or you flying into a downdraft...and then the local news crew comes out to do a story and you're on the 6:00 news. Don't add more propaganda to the non-flying public. Thanks
Great flying!, However, you put WAY too much faith in your engine and in the air around it. One pocket of cool sinking air and you're drinking lake water or worse. In my opinion, it's not worth the rush. Safe Flying!!
Thanks for your concern, but...There is absolutely no way the wheels can catch the water and sink me at the speeds I'm skimming the water at. There is no "rush" while I'm doing it. I'm totally relaxed while flying along the water surface.
You don't deserve the privilege of flying.

I would have told him to fuck off. Your not breaking any rules unless your coming close to people or man made objects.
I had a bucaneer XA very similar :)

LOL. I had a friend that was doing just this and POW downdraft goodbye plane. luckily he was fine. I wouldn't be comfortable with such small tires.

judging by the description, he does it all the time.
even if he messes up, i doubt he'll lose more than the plane at those speeds.

See my reply to quickflyer below...
If you haven't done this in a plane like this, you're not qualified to say it's unsafe.
I've done it at least a hundred times with no close calls...I say it's completely safe for me to do it...You won't be seeing me in the news.
