Hard to prove that Julius caesar Existed??? You have temples! You have statues! You have coins! Jesus on the other hand? Just Christian writings beginning with the writings of Paul, which do not say much. Everything else is derivative! And if there was an historical Jesus, the Christians have their whole task yet ahead of them.
They actually said it would be difficult to prove Julius Caesar existed? There were documents written BY him, ABOUT him, and statues made IN HIS TIME OF HIM. Idiots.
There is actually no evidence that jesus existed at all, any "proof" the church has mustered over the centuries have been proven to be forgeries created by the hands of the church. No historical or archeological evidence means he never existed. Sorry guys.
@dex1391 If he was, and historians have done so... then my AP World history book must be wrong, because the Jesus' and Christiantiy's beliefs are treated the same as any other religion discussed in the book (as false), as it should.
@dex1391 Still loopholes in his 'existence'. There'd be much more info on him, especially for such an influential char in history- not just information about him years after he 'existed'.
You seriously need to do some reading on the subject. There are no loopholes. There is more info on Christ than almost anyone in his time period. He has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Anyway if Jesus didn't exist, who was the one who "invented" the Jesus. His apostles? Paulus? They definetely existed you can't disprove that. There is enough proof of christian pursuit in history. The evangelists? (Which were much more than only 4) It is nonsense to assume Jesus didn't exist. His doing has still huge impacts on our life.
haha... i wanna see the out come. he could always quote the bible, but i wouldnt get my facts from a book of fairy tails that has such stories as men living in "fish"...
Upon second viewing, I'm struck by how biased the reporting is. For one thing, it's NOT hard to prove Julius Caesar (a Roman emperor, hello?) existed.
Jesus was essentially forgotten for four decades before he was "remembered" after the first Gospel came out. No secular sources document his existence. Many early Christians didn't even believe he existed (The Gnostics anyone?)
i cant believe that people believe in a story {jesus and the bible} thats just a copy of a story that happened way before christ about 1,000 years before.if your gonna believe in anyone believe in horus same story as christ but there is actual evidence that this was written before the bible
what the hell man what about Harry Potter so many many books and movies he gotta be real. LOL and Santa Clause too.. well can't forget the mighty Yoda and Master Chef.
Sure I can. I can go to the Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser-ranging Operation center, and bounce lasers off the reflectors the astronauts put on the moon. We use these reflectors to measure the speed at which the moon is moving away from the earth.
Why are creationists always conspiracy theorists? You guys think scientists gather together to conspire against you... it's nuts! You'll believe any conspiracy idea, but you deny facts and evidence. But, I guess you have to if you want to believe in an invisible man...
@freedom0f5peech because you are an idiot. So you don't believe in anything that can't be 100% proven? Then you surely don't believe in gravity. Noone can prove that everything with mass creates a, how would you call it?, magical field?, that attracts other mass. It's a theory. But just because something is hard to prove doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If there are indices that show it could be true and if it hasn't been disproven yet, you can assume that it is right.
We may not understand everything about gravity, but its effects are demonstrable. Scientific theories are built upon collections of observable and (repeatable) demonstrative facts.
I see no reason to believe in something that cannot be demonstrated. What's the point? To delude yourself? To be wrong? To waste time and money on something that isn't correct? To potentially hurt yourself and others? I'll pass... thanks.
@freedom0f5peech ah so if something or someone has his own mind so that humans won't be able to do their scientific work on it and if the scientists can't determine how he/it will react then it automatically doesn't exist? Gravity only exists because it always works the same way, but god doesn't, because he's not? As long as you can't disprove it's not wrong to believe in it. Anyways most rights (especially the human rights) are justified with christian belief.
@paxpacis2 (woah. just noticed this was a while ago... but I'll hit it! :D) Christianity also had no problem with slavery, nor did the US, a "christian-based" nation, have a problem with treating african americans as trash. That being said, I've an invisible, pink, unicorn pet, and it's on your shoulder RIGHT NOW. Except, it deceives all your senses- you can't hear it, smell it, feel it, etc. You HAVE to believe me though.
There are way too many historical sources to say that Jesus did not exist. I would question the person's education level and intelligence if they believe that he din't exist.
The decaying Roman Empire invented Jesus the Christ out there in Palestine as a controlling mechanism to keep their power. Romans and the Pharisees had driven the "have-nots" so low that a critical need arose for a new manifestation independant of Roman tradition and Judaic tradition that would continue to force them to travel thru the "eye of the needle". The "irregularness" of Christ was to bring to bring the propensity of the "have-nots" up to where would be a legitimate opposing force.
"there are too many things in this world that science can not explain. God exists because he defies logic and reason." I see, so because there are things science has yet to understand it makes more sense to believe in MAGIC? That's a primitive way of thinking. Science is still young and the universe is vast; there will always be things science has yet to understand. But knowledge moves forward, as opposed to dogma which forever keeps its eyes shut.
magic...yeah right. can magic perform miracles? and young science...are you kidding me???....science is as old as the moon. we will never understand it fully. stop fightng the existence of GOD and just believe. I guarantee you, the day you accept, your entire life will change and you will know that it is GOD. Good Day.
"magic...yeah right. can magic perform miracles?" Um...That's what I meant by magic! Duh...
"and young science...are you kidding me???....science is as old as the moon." Science, as a systematic and objective system for understanding the natural world, is only a few hundred years old. It is RELIGION which is ancient, and has outmoded ways of explaining the universe
"stop fightng the existence of GOD and just believe" Sounds like a person who can't think for him self. Are you so scared of death that you will believe ANYTHING that says you are immortal? I feel sad for you wasting your one and only life on the expectation of an after life (same for all you poor delusional/brainwashed people), if people could look at the world and explore it for what it really is, rather then make up stories that requier faith/ignorance...the history of religion is brutal.
@jwnetlive You're calling someone an idiot because he asks you to be rational.
Your reasoning for belief in a god is idiotic - science can not explain everything and thus God exists because he defies logic and reason. That's some of the silliest bullshit I've ever seen.
Whatever science does not yet know equals unknown, it does not equal 'magic man'
There quite likely was a man named Jesus that existed ... but that does not mean he was the Jesus of the bible. There are many mariacle-producing profits through history that have numerous sources.
There are about 12 well documented sources outside of the bible whose description of Jesus matches the one described by the writings of the Gospel accounts. The hardest aetheists like Antony Flew believe that Jesus existed, died on a a cross, and that his disciples and others "believed" he actually resurrected, as judged by the radical change in behavior of his followers after his death.
I am sure that every atheist does not believe that Jesus fully died and came back to life.
By the 'Jesus of the bible' I meant more specifically that the two are the same reference, but that he is treated more like yet another (though later quite famous) prophet and healer at the time than any kind of real divine being by other accounts.
"There are way too many historical sources to say that Jesus did not exist." Not true. There are no CONTEMPORARY accounts of him, everything is after the fact. Odd for a man who performed miracles in front of thousands. We have plenty of records from that time; Jewish, Roman and Greek. No one from THAT TIME ever mentions him. Coincidence? I think not.
"There are way too many historical sources to say that Jesus did not exist." Earliest reference is attributed to Josephus (93ad). Only problem is that the oldest copy we have is from the 11th century and came from the church. The passage in question is generally believed to have been added by early church monks who copied the book down through the generations, a common practice, one even encouraged by popes.
"There are way too many historical sources to say that Jesus did not exist." More on the Josephus quote. Other Jewish writers often commented on Josephus's writings, but not until the 4th century do any of them mention his passage about Jesus. That suggests strongly that original and early copies did not mention Jesus, but that somewhere in the 4th century someone (a monk) added the reference to Jesus when transcribing. From then on, people said Josephus gave an account of Jesus. Hogwash.
