  • I m not sure I would prefer this option to the normal amputation...

  • THE GIRL IN THIS VIDEO IS MY HERO

  • :S I know someone who is getting this done.

  • My god

  • ive got 1 of these ,cause i had a infection in my knee

  • I actually saw someone like this. Now, it all makes sense.

  • seems like it would be painful on the ankle

  • Very clever

  • crazzyyyyyy. awesome.

  • id hit

  • A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!! ..

  • que fregon

  • why do you have to do this?!?

  • oh my god :-O

  • a kid on my football team has cancer and has to have this kind of surgery!!!! :'(

  • Treatment options for osteosarcoma around the knee would include above knee amputation, limb salvage surgery with a tumor endoprosthesis, limb salvage surgery with knee fusion, and rotationplasty. Each of these procedures would have their own advantages and disadvantages. Cancer is not an easy disease for both the patient and the family, and the physician taking care of the patient. Cancer survivors are real life heroes. Shannah you impress me!

  • Rotationplasty was first described by Borggreve in 1927 and was popularized by Dr.Van Ness when he used theprocedure to treat patients with congenital femoral deficiency, it was Dr. Kotz and Saltzer who applied this procedure for sarcomas or cancer around the knee.

In this particular case it was used for treatment of Osteosarcoma, a very aggressive cancer.

  • Why do people need this done?? :S Is it if their knee joint doesn't work or somet. Becuase if not, then this is weird...

  • @sambo734 I have had the procedure, actualy I was the second one the performed at the Mayo in Rochester. Mine was performed because I had cancer, and I am pretty sure that is the reason most are performed.

  • @joshuabrunner0075 Ah right, and sorry to hear you caught cancer. But I don't understand why the knee has to be removed, was it some sort of cancer in the knee? What type of cancer did you have if you don't mind me asking?

  • @sambo734 I had osseogenic sarcoma, which is a type of cancer, found in the bone, and most often in children under the age of 18 or 19. The tumor was right on my knee. There are several reasons to have this particular surgery, as apposed to having a regular amputation. One is that they can do the surgery without cutting nerves, thus eliminating "Phantum pains". Another is that using the foot and ankle provides a natural pressure point and joint for movement of the prosthetic limb.

  • @joshuabrunner0075 The original indication for rotationplasty is a birth defect called "Proximal Focal Femoral Deficiency", in which the upper end of the thigh bone fails to form, so that children to not have a ball of the hip joint. When done for that problem, the end of the thigh bone is turned around and fused to the hip socket, so the knee serves as the hip, and as shown on the video, the ankle can serve as an knee.

  • one more time the "new" medicine amazed me!! I'm just wondering who and when came with this

  • She just happens to be the happiest person i've ever met. Not photoshopped, its the real deal. She had bone cancer... retards... and it was rotationplasty or lose the entire leg. She is just great, and is BLESSED. Religion is a terrible word. She loves Jesus, Jesus loves her. Not any different from you loving your father and your father loving you, to be honest. She is inspiring and enjoys life more than most people i've ever met.

  • @rjc34 Religion has also been proven scientifically and empirically to contribute to health and wellbeing. Furthermore, it is religious people who are out there on the mission field in developing nations delivering treatment to those who cannot afford it.

  • @1hmm2 That's funny... a religious person attempting to use the scientific method to justify religion. The entire central dogma of religion (believing without evidence) flies completely in the opposite direction of science.

And sure, lots of missionaries go out and help people in developing nations... they also take advantage of them and push their beliefs on them, trying to wipe out whatever traditional beliefs they may have had.

  • @Atafect I don't care how impressive this is I'm getting out my flamethrower

  • Amazing

  • lol, we should destroy faults from nature so it wont be maken again.

  • @BrocTheMagnifico

i think it's supposed to be an obvious given here, though they did not choose to cover it, that she HAD to have the midsection of her leg removed. it's not a procedure done for giggles. bone cancer, for instance, might require such action to ensure complete removal of the affected tissue.

  • I expect more from the people asking why it was done, this is the internet people, there are such things as searches, though I have to agree that this video is confusing in the fact it does not explain why this would have to be done.

From the website I found in 1 second after doing a search for rotationplasty:

Children diagnosed with osteosarcoma or Ewing’s sarcoma in their distal femur are usually given three surgical options: complete amputation, limb-salvage, or rotationplasty.

  • 1:59 so inspiring, great woman!

  • hold on...why did she have to do it?:s

  • @samiamred its cool!!!

  • @samiamred she had osteosarcoma - cancer in her knee

  • @samiamred The part of the leg that is removed is usually diseased with like a tumor or something

  • @samiamred because a part the knee joint and stuff was destroyed or had to be removed, so instead of using a fake leg they kept a joint in the body which people can control and it works better

  • @samiamred for fun

  • @samiamred tipically this proceadure is done to persons who had ostesarcoma or other pathollogy that had the knee amputated. So it has excellent results.

  • @samiamred Cancer among other issues that cause that section to be removed.

  • @samiamred because jews

  • Comment removed

  • @samiamred bone cancer mostly grows next to the knee, so they can either ampulate the entire leg below the knee, or do this, which allows the person to still have mobility where their knee use to be.

  • @btyson2 that makes sense, I wish the video was a bit more informative on that matter.

  • omg what happen to her leg!! AH! I never want to lose a body part!!!

  • looks photoshopped

  • @BrocTheMagnifico dude i just laughed so hard. oh man that's terrible but thanks.

  • Wow, they should have really told us why you'd need one of those in the video. I thought they were doing it just because they could.

  • I have a friend with this, he is now 26, and a Paralympic athlete in Canada

  • @BrocTheMagnifico if you didn't cut off their leg, they may develop gangrene and die. or their cancer may spread to the rest of the body. dumb comment.

  • 0:25

YOU DAWG I HERD YOU LIKE FOOT SO WE PUT A FOOT IN YO FOOT

  • @BrocTheMagnifico They said "the healthy lower leg" so their options are Rotationplasty or an amputation.

  • I wonder if she feels a sensation of "backwardness"... essentially her knee and her ankle are doing the opposite motion, no? or at least as far as her brain is concerned.

  • @FoamingGypsy

according to her, it feels exactly the same as normal

"Not at all. During the operation they left the entire nerve intact so after it, moving my foot was the same as before. They actually got me to wriggle my toes as soon as I woke up to check that it was all ok. I was quite suprised that it felt completly normal."

  • Ok, I'm sorry, maybe I'm missing something, but why in the hell would you do this?!

  • @robynbird28 it explains in the video that it is only necessary for infants that having a condition with part of their legs.

  • WHY

  • WHY WOULD YOU CUT OFF YOUR LEG

  • Man this is awesome but I know my friends and I would have called this girl something stupid like backwards-leg-girl.

I'm stupid just like my friends.

  • A blessing? Doctors and scientists blessed you ? wrong bitch. you can thank scientists and doctors for their studying and not some fake ass religion bull shit.

  • @fr3d420 Bro, why u so mad?

  • @fr3d420

    bless·ing —noun

a special favor, mercy, or benefit: the blessings of liberty.

"A patient referred to a beneficial surgical procedure as a blessing?! I must post angry comments on YouTube telling people that it wasn't thanks to God and that religion is fake-ass bullshit!!1! Rabble rabble rabble"

  • @Baldurpet

its pretty clear she meant a divine blessing.. which is BS.

  • 2:00 Is where they show her walking on it. Incredible!

  • @shoegazer666 It's not fake. It's real. Look up other videos on youtube with kids that have it.

  • omg this sounds extreme. what if in ten years they come up with something so much better/efficient/healthier than this? you have no chance of recieving that care that you deserve because you already had this procedure!

  • @wootyeah222 These people don't have ten years to wait for a possible alternative. That's like saying, 'why go through chemo now when there could be a cure for cancer in 50 years?' -__- Congratulations for one of the dumbest comments on Youtube.

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

  • Man, this is so wierd but its so cool too

  • @LadyRelena000 This is an alternative to complete amputation.

I've gotta say, your comment is very 4chan.

  • @LadyRelena000

Rotationplasty is an operative procedure where a portion of a limb is removed, while the remaining limb below the involved portion is rotated and reattached. This procedure is used when a portion of an extremity is injured or involved with a disease, such as cancer.

The operation is also called a Van-ness rotation.

  • @LadyRelena000 knee cancer.

  • @BrocTheMagnifico

No you idiot, this clearly is better then a normal leg and obviously performs better! Its a god damned foot, replacing a god damned knee. IT JUST MAKES SENSE!

    /s

    Again, you're an idiot.

  • AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • but why?!?

  • RULE 34.

  • AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • whoever thought of this procedure was really thinking out of the box that day.

  • I wonder if she can move those toes?

  • @pwnt7 Yes she can!

  • greeat video ! :-) i dont have this but it makes me understand now !
