@seaniebwoy76 I just don't like that message. I like Nirvana but my religion is something i take seriously though. Im not trying to be rude or anything, just something to get off my chest. This reminds me of XTC's Dear God
Maybe a radio station has the biggest, stiffest broomstick shoved so far up their ass they can't stop kicking the hornet's nest and let it go. (I know. I know. But like it or not, despite some little words printed on some paper and/or plastic, the BAND CALLS IT SOMETHING ELSE.)
The title is from an old christian song called "Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam". You can find it here on YouTube, but it's very christian-y, and I don't like it.
fuck you dumb motherfuckers, arguing about song a title. it works both ways you cunts. if you dislike kexp then you get the vasselines to play live for you and get a really nice quality video recording of it. put up with this or get the fuck out. simple as that.
@246mitch Actually this is an original song by The Vaselines. In MTV Unplugged, Kurt Cobain says it's a rendition of an old Christian song although the original Christian song is "I'll be a sunbeam" and is more of a children's song. This song is like a parody of it.
@ThePhantomLord76, actually it's not! That is not the way that the band The Vaselines wrote it. Look up their albums, like the newly collected "Enter the Vaselines," on Sub Pop and you'll see that it's "Wants". Kurt Cobain, who was covering their song, called it different, but it's not his song.
@ThePhantomLord76, I can't really tell you why. But look at the album artwork, both on the original releases by the band and on the 2009 re-issue of their work by Sub Pop.
@therealpsychopath, we recognize and acknowledge that he says so, but this is NOT the way that it is listed on the CD. Look up "The Way of The Vaselines: A Complete History" on Amazon or Wikipedia, or go to Sub Pop website and look, or better yet, buy the album yourself.
@billysometimes, we're getting tired of answering this. It's written that way on the album... was and is. Not just one "record company." We opted to go with the way the song title is published, not what he said. If we went the other way, a whole bunch of other people would complain that we didn't write it the way the song was actually titled, so who really cares? Do you like the song or not?
@therealpsychopath and kexpradio; Well if Nirvana made it world famous under a different name in 1993 he's gonna go with the renaming in later years rather than cause confusion isn't he!
But you've made your own confusion anyway as you can't see the other side of a magnifying glass. You american?
the vaslines altered the lyrics of the orignal song jesus wants me for a sunbeam, but the original song is called jesus wants me for a sunbeam so they kept the original name
this is one of my all time favourite songs live, and the performance i just impecable. it's such a shame that they put her vocals too high, cos the harmonies were spot on and they would have sounded perfect together.
Everytime i hear a cover i always make a point of checking out the original and i've discovered some great bands which i would never have even heard of otherwise.
Ive been a Nirvana fan since '93 but today i thought i'd look up this song in its original form and i'm glad i did. Its absolutly beautiful and its a pleasure to see that its still being performed and Frances voice is just lovely. Think i will buy their album The way of the vasalines.
@axiom671@axiom671 jesus was gay? regardless of how ridiculous religion is, feeding the poor and helping those in need, that sounds gay to you? we cant even be sure he ever existed, but his morals were right
@FaceyFaceFaceTV who fucking cares what kurt thought about them? this version is embarrasing. this band is crap, they haven't changed their style in 20 years. they suck.
i don't base my opinion in kurt's, i have my own criteria.
@Jojos25 What is your criteria? Maybe you are a longstanding musician that has been covered by world famous bands before? Maybe you have a masters in music or are just one of those kids who think you are too cool for school? Maybe you think your own favie bands or your own music you write is the best music under the stars and how dare anyone like something you don't like? Please don't bash musicians. If you don't like it, don't listen. Let everyone else enjoy it.
@Jojos25 wow fuck you. this band is crap?? in their prime they were pretty much the best pop band in the world. you just don't know anything about indie pop/ twee pop music so you're not used to it. you're "criteria" is bullshit.
@Jojos25 this is the original version by the original band. They're not trying to make it original. Some people just want to start arguments without having any information or credit to back it up.
I get it, your one of those nirvana fans who don't truly appreciate the music, but just the image.if your gonna be a dick, go in your room and write about how you don't like one of Kurt cobains favorite bands, and how the world hates you. I suggest you pick up music that isn't as profound as nirvana, because you seem pretty superficial
Love how a wee band from Edinburgh have had so much exposure, mainly due to Nirvana covering their tunes, but there are loads of great Scottish bands, just a pity wee are a small nation who the music industry seems to over look. Please check out Belle & Sebastian, another great band.Peace from Scotland to all.
if kurt said it it must be law right? this song is a parody of an old christian song, it isn't actually a christian song. it takes its name and first line from "i'll be a sunbeam", a 19th century hymn.
i think it's impossible for me to watch a video of the vaselines without kids mentioning nirvana. it's really aggravating to indie pop geeks like myself.
@TheFatjoe248 I think that this is meant in the imerative, and is directed towards Jesus: "Don't want me for... Don't expect me to...", etc. It seems to me to be a form of renunciation of any commitment towards Christianity and towards Jesus.
cmon bitches , your both pretty . Stop arguing over lame crap , your words are making me sick of both these bands . Btw both bands covered this song . Idiots
believe it or not this is a cover of sorts. It's an old christian song that they just put a few spins on to make it their own. which is to say they made it about a person who rejects christ so to speak.
Indeed, they are referencing the song "I'll Be a Sunbeam," which begins "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam." They use both titles "wants" / "doesn't want" interchangeably when referring to it, but the album does list the title as "wants" despite how it's introduced here. So I hope that's "right" enough for you, motherblackcap. Thanks!
Is it just me or does she (please tell me her name) has terrible guitar technique?
However, amazing song. :)

totong777 9 months ago
ok heres the real story that you can find by listening to kurt cobains introduction to playing this song on the unplugged album:
1) it was originally done by a religious group.
2) the vaselines took the song and changed it to jesus DOESNT want me for a sunbeam
3) Nirvana covered it and did it the vaselines way.
thats the whole story! now quit arguing and listen to the fucking song!!!!!!!!!!!
