Thank you for this great info.... I care for my own hair - and I have so much success - because I have educated myself.... I love learning more! Time to get some pH Strips! Thanks again sweetie!
Kimmay...great information but how would one know if their hair is coarse, medium or fine without knowing what to compare it to. Would you say we should compare it to a piece of average sewing thread? If so, the I would say mine is fine.
Hey, Kim! I think my hair texture is fine and the density is medium! Thank you so much for the vids! They are so helpful! Also, I wanted to know what shampoo, conditioner, and detangler are you currently using? Do you still use the Kinky Curling Custard and/or the Knot Today? Thnx! :)
Hi kim, i think your best feature is your eyes! u r very beautiful when u squint them, u look good with bags and all, most of all u r a beautiful woman inside and out!
Thanks for the confirmation! When my hair was relaxed, it definitely was fine and thin. It just makes sense that it would still be the same when natural. I don't do a traditional Afro, usually, but I do style my hair in knot/twist-outs, that essentially is a curly Afro. My biggest challenge now is to keep my hair moisturized - it's been dry, and learning what works best for me.
I would consider my hair to be thick in density however, my hair seems like its suck in a rut and I'm not noticing any growth.
I love my hair I have been natural since 99' I had locks and cut them in 07 but I don't feel as if my hair is growing like it should! HELP! What can I do?
i have very curly and fine hair. easy to do wash and go or i finge curl them to make neat spirals. but some style my hair cant do or just dosent come close to
great video for those who can do it but my hair is very thin on top so i have to wear wigs or weave I wish i could wear my own hair,,,but I have a scalp problem so Im stuck...lol...and you are blessed that your hair can be full and grow like it does...WONDER VIDEO...and i love part 2 also .:)
I'm a new natural since June 25, 2011. I've had a perm since I was 11 years old, and I had no idea what my natural looked like, or what it is capable of doing. When I turned 50 I desided to go completely natural. Of course our professional stylist don't have a clue, so I had to go "underground" to Youtube to find out how to deal with my beautiful kinky, curly hair. Love the videos, and for the first time I am truely proud of my hair, and love taking care if it.
Seems like the majority have fine strands which makes sense as the smaller the hair follicle the finer the hair and vice versa, with afro hair having a linear ribbon like follicle.
My hair is medium-fine strands/ average density with mainly z coils a bit like the spring of a biro pen, with looser s coils in the back. But what I'm really curious about is the size of the coil; mine range from 2mm to 5mm in diameter, what do you think is the average?
I had a conversation with my aunt the other day.. And she believes that "afro-textured" hair is coarse.. I remembered this video and said that isn't true..
I couldn't explain it very well because she made me second guess it. But I'll just have her watch this video. :}
Hi Kimmay! I am 24 and my eyes do the same thing. They have been this way as long as I can remember. I've met so many people, and always felt like I was the only one, but you have been so inspirational in this for me. I have a fine texture and I assume it's medium for the follicles, maybe lower. You have expressed the belief of embracing yourself regardless of what "society" edits/desires. Thank you for the encouraging word. ~CSB
I have fine strands, but I have a lot of them! When I used to go to new hair dressers every time they loosed my hair from it's pony tail they'd say "Wow! You have more hair than I thought!" I also have a small head my hair density is deceiving. My hair is pretty wispy at the hair line like my mum's, but gets denser about an inch past that point. great info as usual!
I have hairs on my hair that are thinner than the one you displayed. These are so thin, I sometimes worry that they are split hairs, but then I see the bulb at the end. Anyway, I guess I have fine & extra fine strands.
My hair is fine. Without defining my curls my hair seems to be loose and free. My hair can either be wave like or defined with tight curls. I am learning so much about my hair and I love it. Thanks
Thank you so much for the information. This is a very accurate explanation of hair "thickness". People always assume that their hair gets thicker because they go natural but thats not true.
I find that my hair is very fine. When I two strand twist my hair it tends to want to lay flat on my head instead of puffing out like I see some of the other women that have natural hair.
I would say that my hair is medium now, but growing up I always had people tell me my hair was thick and long. I have been without chemicals in my hair for five months now and I love it. I notice a photo of you from 2009 until 2011 showing how your hair have grown since you went natural and I love it. I know my hair will do the same.
Great job again, Kim! I would say my hair is fine, average density..... I still have a major problem with it drying out quickly, although I moisturize approx. twice a day....
I think mine is fine and has between low and average density. Now here's the issue, when I do twists, my hair still looks scanty, even in the back. is this something I'll just have to live with or is there something that can be done about it? what styles can people with fine and average hair do without it looking sooo thin or scanty?
I just love the information you share and look forward to seeing part II. My hair (hairstylist told me) is dense and fine. In it's natural state it's more challenging to detangle and I'm thinking it's because of the density/fine strands.
This was very informative information, I've learned a lot by your videos (others as well) and it is good idea to do our homework before we all open our mouths about HAIR and what's what...thanks for the info!
Finally she said, "look how easily it straightens...its thin" Smh. I explained to her that my hair is fine, but it isn't thin. Its thick. She was very firm in her stance that it is impossible to have fine, thick hair. Even stylists are ignorant about natural hair and that is ridiculous and kind of scary. I'm glad that you have these videos so that we can learn about our hair and we don't have to rely on stylist who probably don't have much understanding about hair.
@jancrewe Comments like these make it all worth it to me.
It's crazy that a stylist would say to you that it is impossible to have LOTS of fine hairs on your head. Maybe she didn't pick that up from the textbooks. All of the info is in there. After all, that's where I've learned most of what I know. Cosmetology/Hair care textbooks.
Good for you. If you're keeping track of your hair and you handle it the most, you know its status better than anyone.
I am grateful for this video because just last year in the midst of transitioning, I went to a hair stylist to wash and flat iron my hair; at the time I had a few tracks. As the stylist was flat-ironing my hair she said, "wow your hair is thinning!" Now I knew this was far from the truth so I said to her, "Actually my hair is very thick." She insisted that my hair was thinning due to me not perming it. I admitted that it was breaking but I refused to accept that it was thinning. (Part 1)
@MissSharon50 Well, it just makes your hair (our hair) very delicate and more prone to breakage when handling it. I think when we think of our hair as being STRONG, we are careless and not gentle in the way we handle it.
This is why I emphasize gentle handling, protective styling and keeping it DEtangled as much as possible. Hence no shrunken afros & wet sets for me. Our hair already wants to break easily, no use in encouraging more weak points with knots & tangles. Strategy! :o)
@innerbeauty24 but pay attention to the TYPE of naturals they have on commercials. i have yet to see a 4 ANYTHING textured natural in a commercial. only black women with curls (and they're usually light skinned or mixed looking). to me, all that does is reinforce the "good hair, bad hair" message.
According to your charts, I have fine medium and course hair on this natural head of mine. It varies depending upon where it is on my head. thanks for the video.
Does age determines how your grows as well. I'm in my early 30's and just became natural. I wonder if my hair will grow out the same way it did when i was child/teenager meaning will my hair grow thick/fine or long/short. will the texture and density will be the same?
My hair is medium to fine in density. The longer it grows, the finer it seems, until I realized what you said earlier: that I am used to seeing wigs, extensions and add in for hair, thus making comparisons really hard!
i dont know what my hair is. When it was relaxed i would say it was thin and fine. But since ive gone natural the strands have bulked up. maybe thick???
wow, always love the knowledge, i have learned so much from your tutorials...and passed on yourtube, well anyway my hair type has a high density, because it is very thick and tightly coiled
My hair is extremely dense but also extremely fine. The density is the reason I can't fit my hair into one ponytail and I also have to be beyond gentle with it because it tangles and can brake so easily.
I love the HD detail of the hair strands and the graphic presentation. I am learning so much from you. I thank God for the vision He has given you. You exemplify how we are blessed to be a blessing! Thank you Kimmay and may the Lord continue bless you and this great work!
Medium hair texture with average to high density and a combination of 4b and 4c. Ofcourse, I'd love for someone to analyze it because the coils vary throughout the head. I am now in sisterlocks so I see the variance affects the locking process!
I would claim thick density. I've stretched my perm to 29 weeks and the texture is a very tight coil, perhaps a 4c. Is there a 4d? LOL! Love this video.
I would say I have average density with a fine and medium texture. I have the s curls. I think it's the 4a. Cool video! Always informative and as my mom say you should learn something new everyday and this was my lesson for today! Thanks Kim! Do you know if you will be able to get another supplier for the bohemian rhapsody wraps??
Yeah, mine is 3c-4a ish Thick and Course. It wavers between a really nice wave and straw type spiral curls. I think if my hair was thinner it would actually hang down when it dries. Now it just dries up and out.
I have 4C hair, I think. Strands are fine, densely cropped and tightly coiled. This means I have to use heat carefully, mainly to detangle after washing. I'm also ready to swear off harsh chemical treatments, like bone-straight perms.
I have fine dense hair. I have more of a wavy pattern than curly however. This was really educational thanks for the info Kim! When can we expect your product line to launch? I'm patiently waiting for the news, well maybe not so patiently lol!
I have thick, medium hair, that is tightly coiled. Thanks for the information, because for years I and others have always refered to my hair as coarse, not realizing it's really tightly coiled. As always thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Wow thank you so much my hair looks BIG and POOFY after I come out of the shower but in braids my hair is just like yours and now looking at pictures of myself when i was younger and my hair was down my back in braids I have thin hair also (just looks big sometimes) thanks for this video :D
I really enjoyed hearing you discuss that media diistorts what African texture hair really looks like. I thought it was an interesting thought and have been thinking about it because it is so true.
very informative! I'm sooo glad I found these videos, because I was wodering the answers to these questions for so long! and googled sites just weren't explaining it well enough ;) thanks!
This reminded me of Honey I Shrunk The Kid when you zoomed in lol. I have 4a hair all over, but I have a section of 3c in the back of my head and it drives me nuts! Good vid =)
Kim, I love how you showed us the actual shot and the retouched photo and let us know that you love the way you look in your untouched photo. I like that kind of honesty. You look great...as usual! :)
Your knowledge has helped me so much in learning about my hair. I didn't run back to the relaxers as I had previously done and then do a big chop again. You are the best.
My hair is 4C very kinky and coily but it has a fine to medium thickness. My back and front edges are actually a 4a to 4b. My hair is very easy to detangle
My hair( 4C) is very Kinky and Coarse. I have medium/thick hair. my hair tangles so easy and it difficult to deal with if i don't straight some how. i need to blow dry at least or i will be dealing with hell.
Excellent video Kimmay. Thank you for all time that you put into these videos for us (YouTube natural hair seekers). And, thank you so much for the detailed scientific explanatoin on the different types of our hair.
I have fine strands in my hair. I've noticed in my first year of transitioning that as the hair grew longer itstarted really coarse then became less detangled, with a defined curl pattern. I thought maybe something was wrong. I use my fingers to comb through 90% of the time now.
Hi Kimmay, I have long bra strap length natural hair, I have been natural for 4 years now. I am embrassed to wear my hair out (weave) because my hair has thinned so much due to hormonal deficiencies. I have bald areas in the center of my head. I am supplementing hormones to replace what I lost. Do you have any information regarding whether my hair can grow back in those areas. I have been supplementing for 3 years now and have seen little success in those areas?
oh yeah...I would say i'm your average nappy head! Fine strands with medium density...folks been telling me I have THICK hair all my life...NOT REALLY! LOL!
My hair is fine but you wouldn't believe how many people argue with me about it as if i don't know what's on my heads. I have enough strands that when my hair was loose (locked now) as long as I didn't weigh it down too much, and wore the right style, it floated in a way that gave the illusion of more fullness. Box braids told the truth every time. My locks are very full because I have enough strands to fake thick hair. I'm sharing this. Thanks!
i think i have coarse hair and medium density - although everyone thinks my hair is thick, i feel like i have seen a change in either texture or density since having my son. I am wondering if hormonal fluctuations can temporarily or permanently affect texture?
So glad you did this video...especially the part about texture. I think a lot of women have issues with their hair (natural and relaxed) because they assume Afro-textured hair is automatically coarse and so they treat it that way (i.e. not gently). I had to go natural to figure out that the reason relaxers tore my hair up so bad was because while my hair was indeed "nappy" my strands were actually quite fine. Understanding this was key to my length retention.
@LBellatrix Agree 100%. The myths kept length retention away for many of us were using the wrong techniques. Can you imagine that it took years to free ourself from myths.
My hair is dense with medium and coarse areas in the middle. I remember as a little girl and having someone do my hair, all I heard was "girl you got a full head of hair". It made me feel as if it was a bad thing. So glad that I'am able to embrace my God given crown!
EDIT: I just looked in the mirror and my hair looks denser than your husband's (Actually, my husband's hair looks eerily similar). So, While I may have an average thickness, my hair is terribly thin... but it's still pretty strong and resilient!
Erm I think have low density AND thin hair... bottom line, I can't really layer my twists like some other naturals. Either the twists are too big and I don't get the layers, or they're too small, close to twisting two threads of hair at a time. This could be a blessing, as it doesn't take long to do my hair :D
My hair is Fine / average ... I just can't get the (crown) of my hair to catch up with the bang , tail, and sides of my hair ... The age of my hair is 5yrs old . .. length is 3in past collar bone :( Not sure what to do
So true. Ppl often told me that my hair is "coarse" b/c it's thick. Thick, yes, but not coarse. Verified when asked friend/retired cosmetologist to press my natural hair. She saw my natural hair for first time and said she was wrong about my hair texture. It's medium.
My hair is somewhat thick but only on the sides and the back. The U-shaped thinnest in the front and on top is the same as my mother's hair. The extra attention I am giving to the thinnest is coming along but I believe since my mother's hair is this way it just may be that I will always be alittle thinner in those areas.
Nice cam, but you use it alot. Great vid, I've determined that I have average density with a fine texture. Thanks for helping with this determination.
i love your educational video and they are like none other. YOu were the deciding factor for me and my sisters natural journey because you broke it down for us and explained it to where it was easy for to unerstand! My hair type i believe is fine and i am not sure of the density! thanks and please keep on making more videos
my hair is definitely "fine". When I wore it relaxed many years ago I hated how flat it laid against my head. Now that I wear it curly everyone thinks that it's thick but I know better because I deal with it every day and I can compare my hair to others in real life and YT enough to know that my hair is fine in texture.
I would describe my hair as fine. I believe even when I was relaxed I could tell my hair was different from my sister. Hers was always thick and full and mine was thin. Great Video!!!
As always you are absolutely right. I have fine possible low density hair. I can really tell the difference when my hair is straight. However, when I wear my hair kinky people tell me al that time that my hair is so thick and believe I have a lot of it. They are surprise when I correct them.
I have several different types of hair on my head. I have fine hair in some areas and coarse in others. I have thin and thick. I even have more than one hair in some follicles. My hair is so thick people who have braided it say I have enough hair for two people, lol.
On point with this video. I have fine low density hair which was hard to embrace because of the distorted perception that the hair is suppose to be full thick like a weave.
Happy to see you back Kim. I would describe my hair as Low/Average density with very thin texture. Yours appear thick textured to me. My thin and your thin is something totally different. My hair (individual strands) are not much thicker than a cobweb lol...A bit exaggarated, but you get my drift.
LOL! Thanks for clearing that up about the photo I was just like everyone else--trying to figure out why you looked so different on the first photo--at first I thought maybe you had gained some weight because to my perception, your face looked more filled out. My hair is fine, average to thinner density. Always has been.
I don't even know where to begin in describing my hair. I think I am in close proximity to you (living in Baltimore) and my simple wish is that you would have a meet-up so I can show you EXACTLY what I'm working with and get some in-person pointers. This mane of mine is a "horse of a different color"!!
This is very helpful. I just big chopped last Saturday so I am getting used to learning what my needs are for my natural hair. I think I have fine and average...I think

just wanted to say that alot of times when I watch tv, alot of the commercials have african american black women with natural hair styles!!
innerbeauty24 5 months ago
@innerbeauty24 but pay attention to the TYPE of naturals they have on commercials. i have yet to see a 4 ANYTHING textured natural in a commercial. only black women with curls (and they're usually light skinned or mixed looking). to me, all that does is reinforce the "good hair, bad hair" message.
EbunnyEthereal 5 months ago
@EbunnyEthereal there is a commercial for cheerios with a lady with type four hair.

High density, fine strands.
Your camera's definition is amazing. Would you mind telling me the brand and model of the camera?

According to your charts, I have fine medium and course hair on this natural head of mine. It varies depending upon where it is on my head. thanks for the video.
moniquerenee98 5 months ago
Does age determines how your grows as well. I'm in my early 30's and just became natural. I wonder if my hair will grow out the same way it did when i was child/teenager meaning will my hair grow thick/fine or long/short. will the texture and density will be the same?
brain8930 5 months ago
My hair is medium to fine in density. The longer it grows, the finer it seems, until I realized what you said earlier: that I am used to seeing wigs, extensions and add in for hair, thus making comparisons really hard!

MY HAIR IS THICK and i hate it sooo much. Cuz when i straighten it its still puffy because my hair is so thick!
Vlgirl1 5 months ago
i dont know what my hair is. When it was relaxed i would say it was thin and fine. But since ive gone natural the strands have bulked up. maybe thick???
JadedeaJade 5 months ago
wow, always love the knowledge, i have learned so much from your tutorials...and passed on yourtube, well anyway my hair type has a high density, because it is very thick and tightly coiled
SweetGaBrownin 5 months ago
fine and average
BritBrat0311 5 months ago
My hair is extremely dense but also extremely fine. The density is the reason I can't fit my hair into one ponytail and I also have to be beyond gentle with it because it tangles and can brake so easily.

I have thick, medium hair, that is tightly coiled. Thanks for the information, because for years I and others have always refered to my hair as coarse, not realizing it's really tightly coiled. As always thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

MaxxGomillion 5 months ago
I have fine strands in my hair. I've noticed in my first year of transitioning that as the hair grew longer itstarted really coarse then became less detangled, with a defined curl pattern. I thought maybe something was wrong. I use my fingers to comb through 90% of the time now.
bbchecks10 5 months ago
Hi Kimmay, I have long bra strap length natural hair, I have been natural for 4 years now. I am embrassed to wear my hair out (weave) because my hair has thinned so much due to hormonal deficiencies. I have bald areas in the center of my head. I am supplementing hormones to replace what I lost. Do you have any information regarding whether my hair can grow back in those areas. I have been supplementing for 3 years now and have seen little success in those areas?

Discodumpling 5 months ago
My hair is fine but you wouldn't believe how many people argue with me about it as if i don't know what's on my heads. I have enough strands that when my hair was loose (locked now) as long as I didn't weigh it down too much, and wore the right style, it floated in a way that gave the illusion of more fullness. Box braids told the truth every time. My locks are very full because I have enough strands to fake thick hair. I'm sharing this. Thanks!

i think i have coarse hair and medium density - although everyone thinks my hair is thick, i feel like i have seen a change in either texture or density since having my son. I am wondering if hormonal fluctuations can temporarily or permanently affect texture?
okorolina 5 months ago
My hair is very thick and dense. Hard to wet and takes forever to style lol
vculover23 5 months ago
So glad you did this video...especially the part about texture. I think a lot of women have issues with their hair (natural and relaxed) because they assume Afro-textured hair is automatically coarse and so they treat it that way (i.e. not gently). I had to go natural to figure out that the reason relaxers tore my hair up so bad was because while my hair was indeed "nappy" my strands were actually quite fine. Understanding this was key to my length retention.
LBellatrix 5 months ago
@LBellatrix Agree 100%. The myths kept length retention away for many of us were using the wrong techniques. Can you imagine that it took years to free ourself from myths.

My hair is dense with medium and coarse areas in the middle. I remember as a little girl and having someone do my hair, all I heard was "girl you got a full head of hair". It made me feel as if it was a bad thing. So glad that I'am able to embrace my God given crown!
wakiinva04 5 months ago
EDIT: I just looked in the mirror and my hair looks denser than your husband's (Actually, my husband's hair looks eerily similar). So, While I may have an average thickness, my hair is terribly thin... but it's still pretty strong and resilient!
MizzMilk 5 months ago
Erm I think have low density AND thin hair... bottom line, I can't really layer my twists like some other naturals. Either the twists are too big and I don't get the layers, or they're too small, close to twisting two threads of hair at a time. This could be a blessing, as it doesn't take long to do my hair :D

So true. Ppl often told me that my hair is "coarse" b/c it's thick. Thick, yes, but not coarse. Verified when asked friend/retired cosmetologist to press my natural hair. She saw my natural hair for first time and said she was wrong about my hair texture. It's medium.

TheNoleboo 5 months ago
My hair is somewhat thick but only on the sides and the back. The U-shaped thinnest in the front and on top is the same as my mother's hair. The extra attention I am giving to the thinnest is coming along but I believe since my mother's hair is this way it just may be that I will always be alittle thinner in those areas.

my hair is definitely "fine". When I wore it relaxed many years ago I hated how flat it laid against my head. Now that I wear it curly everyone thinks that it's thick but I know better because I deal with it every day and I can compare my hair to others in real life and YT enough to know that my hair is fine in texture.

On point with this video. I have fine low density hair which was hard to embrace because of the distorted perception that the hair is suppose to be full thick like a weave.
adesania 5 months ago
Happy to see you back Kim. I would describe my hair as Low/Average density with very thin texture. Yours appear thick textured to me. My thin and your thin is something totally different. My hair (individual strands) are not much thicker than a cobweb lol...A bit exaggarated, but you get my drift.
carmelqt77 5 months ago
LOL! Thanks for clearing that up about the photo I was just like everyone else--trying to figure out why you looked so different on the first photo--at first I thought maybe you had gained some weight because to my perception, your face looked more filled out. My hair is fine, average to thinner density. Always has been.
