For all those who say they need to put this back into theatres -- they did. I saw the 25th Anniversary Edition of Raiders, recut to 70 mm and looking super good. It played in Chicago at the Music Box for one week to sold out seatings. But there was no fanfare, probably because nobody could trumpet "new surprises" like they did for Star Wars. The "oohs" and "aahs" were still there with a crowd, especially with parents brining their kids. Let's hope for a wide 30th Ann release!
@Piebauld I know that they had a re-release for films like Grease for its 20th, as well as other classics like Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz. But if Raders had a 25th anniversary limited re-relase, as it was with Superman: The Movie in 2001 and Dirty Dancing in 2007, then I have to add my voice to the chorus and say....."DAMN RIGHT, THEY SHOULD!"
@jm113825 I never heard anything about an Indiana Jones theatrical re-release in 2001. Was it very limited? It certainly wasn't like the Special Editions, which were everywhere.
I certainly would have seen the movies on the big screen again, if I could have! (For Raiders, it would have been the 1st time in the theater for me!)
Unfortunately, for SOME reason, I (just) DON'T find this movie entertaining anymore. What would I rather watch instead? The original Jaws and/or Jaws 2.
When Raiders was in on network TV first time in 1986, all the gore fx left intact. No cutting. Awesome. Toht's face melting, and Beloq exploding. Cool. Never in history of network TV seen so much gore, up until that time. Only edit when Indy said Shit when the Nazi sub arrived. Dubbed it to say " oh no "
It'sa little bittersweet to see this now. Like everyone says, when we saw something like this or even the CBS bongo drums, back then, you knew something big and special was coming on! Kids talked about it on the bus on the way home from school what was coming on that night... now kids aren't surprised by anything. You could tell them the Justice League movie with all the stars and characters is coming out in February... no reaction but, "oh... hmm cool I guess."
1986 I was 22 LOL ......smiles. How I got my nickname Jayhawkjaymes my sisters said Indiana Jones name was taken LOL. I miss the days of good TV. The 80's was one damn great decade.
Television was cosy in those days. Although Raiders had long been out on video by that time, many older folks never had the machines and thus this television premiere was something to look forward to.
Television as a medium even then was becoming oversaturated and less interesting for specials and movie prenieres.
WOW!! Talk about nostalgia! This was the 1986-87 Season Premiere to the abc Sunday Night Movie (I think it was the 2nd Sun. in September). It wasn't the movie that stopped me cold, but, got my blood pumping instead. I got this bookmarked on my iphone. F**kin' awesome! FYI - "Ghostbusters" was the season premiere for the 87'-88' season.
I remember a similar order in the theatrical trailer for Conan The Destroyer. There, Schwarzenegger was introduced last despite being top billed in the film.
"Remember, this is the film that stopped you COLD!" Loved Ernie Anderson (he has great vocals), but what the fuck does 'stopped you cold' mean?!?! That's some bullshit...
@KiCreativeStudios the did with the DVD release in 2003, (or for the HD broadcast not sure which) they had one of the Desert Chase cliffs redone digitally
About nearly 2 years ago, my high school did a fund raiser for our orchestra by playing movies at this music theater downtown, which USED to be a movie theater. And so they picked various movies LIKE Raiders of the Lost Ark. And The Star Wars Trilogy.
You're right about this being released on ABC in 1986. I had recorded this when it first aired on ABC and put down 1986 after recording it onto my VHS tape! Thanks for posting this!
I remember this *word-for-word*...This was my tape of Raiders for about 6 years. From replacing the usual ABC Movie music with the Raiders March, to naming Karen Allen before Harrison Ford (?! Alphabetical, maybe?), this is a complete nostalgia trip. Thanks for posting this!
haha i remember this premier too i was 14. back then we would tape all the network premiers of movies on vhs instead of renting them. then every time you watch the movie you end up seeing the network premier intro. haha i get excited just seeing that network intro cause it means a really good movie is going to be on which we can tape on our vcr. ah the memories.
Anyone have the promo for Empire Strikes Back on NBC, with the James Earl Jones vo of Darth Vader "intercepting the transmission?" Darth Vader breaks in and basically takes over the vo duties.
Oh, wow! I never even heard of that. Sounds great. I have the original Star Wars from CBS, but my first copies of Empire and Jedi were from HBO. I'll check if there's anything interesting on them.
Thanks for pointing this out, though! I'll keep my eyes open. Let me know if you see that clip online.
Good point. This movie took 5 years to get to TV. Can you imagine that these days? Everything is out on video and DirectTV in 5 *months*! Back then, a TV premiere was a big deal, and a lot of fun.
Movies on cable channels such as TBS, USA, TNT, Comedy Central, etc. still take about 2-3 years to get to those networks, and I'm pretty sure that it's been about 5-6 months for video from theatre releases at least since '97.
It would be hard to explain to today's youngsters just what a big deal it was to be able to watch big movies like this on TV back then. I was 13 years old in 1986, my family was still a couple years away from owning a VCR and about a decade away from getting cable, so I well remember how stoked my sibs and I were for this airing of a movie we'd loved in the theater.
Using John Williams' theme was a cool gimmick, although I'm still partial to the standard "Star Tunnel" music.
tv in the us was far better than today, many of the today's shows -with very few exceptions- are not so good and let me tell you, my favorite ones of today are ellen degeneres show and the tony danza show -the one on the morning-
I miss Ernie Anderson's unique, deep, thunderous delivery..you never hear much of that anymore since the ad agencies decided to stop trying to reach any viewer over 34..Now all the VO actors sound exactly the same, like they're barely 25,with that airy, raspy tone. UGHH! Thank god that Ken Nordine and Gary Owens
agree 200%, there are no good VO actors anymore, all the great voices are gone. (Ernie Anderson, Percy Rodriguez, Tim McIntyre, etc) Today's VO's are pathetic.
LOL! Good call. I never noticed that before. Either it's alphabetical, like you said, or maybe it's just the suspenseful build-up to the bigger name, so everyone will cheer when it's announced. Or something like that. Even when this aired, Karen Allen wasn't a bigger star than Harrison Ford. ;)
The greatest adventure film in my book. This takes me back to a simpler time; a time when my father would have popped some popcorn for me and sat down to watch the sunday night movie with me. He passed in 2005. God bless ya dad; I miss you!!
No problem. :) Yeah, someone asked me to post this. I knew I had a network airing, but had forgotten that it was the premiere until I watched it again. I had also forgotten that the usual ABC movie music had been replaced by John Williams' "Raiders March." Very cool!
definitely one of the greatest films of all time. george lucas and steven spielberg did a wonderful job on this movie.

I'm surprised George Lucas isn't suing ABC so he can digitally change the title to "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark."
