This is a great movie. According to the commentary, he did this song live on set over and over, not to track. Kevin Kline was jealous of the fact that he didn't get tired. :)

I too appreciate this being available. I always thought this was one of the best songs in American music. And this scene nails it. The sexual connection between Cole Porter and the Fred Astaire character is beautifully natural, riveting and gentle at the same time. The camera pan that enables seamlessly the jump in time is masterful, and adds to the dramatic climax. This scene was filmed live in the Old Vic.. Kline and Barrowman were not lipsyncing but fully performing. THAT's talent.

I remember listening to an interview with John where he talked about that decision to sing the song live, and how he said that he wanted the song to have the real sound of being in a theatre... and every time I watch this scene, I can't help but think that such a choice is part of what makes this song LIVE.
