George originally wrote this song for Ronnie Spector and then did it himself, and said it was a strain to sing because he'd written the song for a woman's vocal range! (Which must be why when I first heard this song as a kid I thought it was a woman singing!). The lyrics come from phrases literally inscribed in and around George's Friar Park mansion. "Ring out the old..." is a line of Tennyson's that the original owner of Friar Park, Sir Francis Crisp, had carved on George's fireplace.
I, too, saw George on this tour, in Montreal. It was my first big rock concert. I was disappointed in his voice, and Ravi Shankar was ill in Chicago. Best song on the album is 'So Sad.'
dispite being very ill with voice troubles,he recorded dark horse anyway......sings better than most sick or not...i saw on his dark horse tour....harri's on tour....
fantastica canzone george ti amiamo!!!this is love dark sweet lady beware of darkness what is life my sweet lord anna julia cloud nine let it roll blow away...this is the story of music
The chorus melody, "Ding Dong Ding Dong" also starts Paul McCartney's, "Let em In". And my clock in my living room. Doesn't Big Ben in London make this melody also?
Another under-rated George song- this vdeo is cool with all the Beatles outfits and I love the album- it got a ton or airplay at the time...I remember hearing Far East Man all the time-
First time viewing of the video of one of my favs from Harri. Somewhere in my vinyls I have the orig. audio. hairypolack, don't you think that perhaps he was demonstrating the "old" that he was ringing out when he showed you the old personnas he held?
Was this before he recorded "The Pirate Song" for Eric Idle's show "Rutland Live"? And it's alittle ahead of "Time Bandits" with those little people in pirate getups too.
His belief system in all things good are how are mine have been for years and still are today! What things they are like wholesome innocence, abstinence, everything good are like the way I was born and raised a Methodist and got saved at that church but, then, when things got too political, I converted to being a Christian Scientist which is someone who believes in the Bible and in God and the power of natural healing and it's right but, going to the doctor is allowed, too.
@shelly36 I've heard of Christian Scientists. Thats what Monkee Mike Nesmith is. Alot of people who don't know any better get that confused with Scientology, VERY, VERY differant.
A happy New Years song from George Harrison. :)
