The director if you didn't know was Richard Ciupka [born in Belgium resident of Quebec] who was a cinematographer most notably on Louis Malle's "Atlantic City". "Curtains" was his directing debut. The original concept was a monster movie about a 500 year old Banshee, then it bacame a slasher movie. That "old hag" mask is pretty scary, I'll admit. Thanks for posting the scene.
Your confusion isn't surprising. Producer Peter Simpson wasn't happy that director made a "European suspense" film instead of a more standard slasher. After sitting on it for a year Simpson spent 2 weeks shooting new scenes to make it more "commercial". The director removed his name and amusingly credited himself as "Jonathan Stryker". I believe this led to the killer's identity being changed during the reshoots. Two opposing views can lead to patchy films. Oh well.
For a mask fan this is a great clip from the movie, thanks for posting.

That mask in curtains from since I saw it as a child is scary. Someone said it looks like a hippie version of Michael Myers.
