There are limits on the formats and extra features you can use. And keeping the free version is tricky because they try really hard to get you to buy the paid version. But it can be done. As for coding into other formats, after you have recorded in HD with Debut, you can take the output and toss it into FormatFactory to get whatever format you need.
is there a limit on how long you can record on this free software? why would someone buy a full version if this free? Just wondering what the pros and cons are.
@attentionstatic The limits are on the number of options in recording formats etc. When the trial expires they try really hard to get you to buy and you have to do an uninstall to find the option to keep the free version. It was not that way when I made this video but it is now. They make it hard for a novice to find how to keep the free version. Camstudio is free. And has nice screen annotations. Just use Format Factory to get the file types you need after recording.
@OpenSourceRocks I'm trying to record video with my webcam, but it doesn't find it. Is it because my webcam is built in to my computer? and would it work if I bought a new webcam?
I have noticed that many sites are once again employing video blocking technology that makes screencapture of some video impossible. I was able to get around it in the past by uninstalling certain Windows Updates, but that was in XP. I have not tried it in Win7. Even then it was a temporary solution until it became impractical to continue avoiding updates and the blocking became more sophisticated.
I have a problem which is when I record from a device (I record my xbox360) the screen frame drops and seems to get limited to either 6 or 10 and it's not enough. I used to be able to just click record and everything went great but now thats not the case. So I am confuse I don't think it is my laptop (1.6 ghz pros, 2GB Ram, 32bit7) I've tried it on other computers but it has the same problem. Although it works fine on my dad's laptop but his has a 2.6 pros with 3gb ram. But it has just stopped:(
@Pheonex125 - How are you recording? Direct off the screen or attempting to use a webcam pointed at your Xbox? If the latter, lighting is an issue. If the recording is dark, the framerate will drop to 6 or 10 as you mention. If you are running game and screen capture on the same machine, then CPU resources may be an issue.
No I am using an ezcap which uses the yellow, red and white cables SD cables. On debut I click on where it says Device and then in the option I choose the source to be the device. Although it does not record more than 10 frames no matter what methoad I am recording i.e recording my desktop, my xbox or even using my webcam. The SD cables I use work fine with over software it's just Debut used to give me the best quality before it started playing up.
@Pheonex125 - It sounds like something is using up resources on your PC. I run Win7 - 32bit, 3.6GB RAM (that is the max recognized on 32bit I believe). So all I can suggest from here is to make sure you have shut down all other processes (check what you have running with CCleaner piriform dot com/ccleaner ) - things like iTunes running in the background, Adobe, etc. Can be resource hogs. Perhaps even use Task Manager to shut down extra junk before recording. Good Luck.
I suspect the problem lies with the speed / memory capacity of your PC. I had a similar issue with a PC with less horsepower. 30 fps is high for a screen capture. I go as low as 18 frames/sec for just capturing action on the screen. 30 is very high quality. I know I suggested high quality capture and then compress, but just set your PC to get the best it can. Debut does allow that.
If you want to spend a little money upgrading, try maxing out your RAM to 2GB. That may speed things up enough.

Really Really Nice Review...but i seem to be having a problem with frame rate when capturing the whole screen
it lags so much
but when i record a specified portion of the screen it works so smooth with 30 fps
any idea how can i solve this..?
