  • Pentatonic Pyrotechnics by Jude Gold

"...The brilliant Los Angeles guitarist and instructor Jean-Marc Belkadi has, as he's done with so many guitar approaches, refined dozens of cool ways to use pentatonics. One thing he likes his students to explore is stringskipping lines such as Ex. 12. And, as shown in Ex. 13, Belkadi often handles string skips the smart, convenient, hybrid way—by plucking the higher string with the picking hands middle finger..." page 93, March 09 Guitar Player Issue

  • tab please!!!!!!

  • what song is this?

I'm convinced it's a Prince song, but I can't remember which one, although I might be wrong. Can anyone help me out?

  • A.D.D!

  • to all tab users: Until you get those ears trained, you will always be at a disadvantage. When one performs onstage, your ear is the primary tool you need. Depending on tab circumvents this training and leaves this skill wanting.

  • You must be a tab advocate to make that comment. Like the real players say, "You just don't know what you don't know."

  • i started playing sax in third grade and have read standard notation since then. so WRONG. for you to come up in here like a pompous dick to tell people who may just be hobbyists how to do things is absurd. tab has its place, yes.

  • Despite your comment, I still hold that learning by ear is the better way to learn the instrument(Never said don't use tab). I don't think John Scofield, Mike Stern,Scott Henderson, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and the list goes on...had, used, or needed tab. And my point, which you missed, was that by using your ear to learn, connections are made that are critical listening skills.

  • i started sax in the third grade and have read standard notation since then. so WRONG. tab has its place, especially for beginners and for actual fingerings. dont be a pompous ass. and as far as "real players" i will play you under the table, look at my vid. you probably dont even play, just talk shit.

  • Chromatype is just trying to help out. The ear is really important to anyone who wishes to master the guitar at any level, use your ears and train them regardless of your level of playing. There's nothing wrong with using tabs every now and then though, don't get me wrong.

  • Hi junka22, Thanks for reading the lines and between them as well. I knew some people out there could get the point and not assume "intent" that wasn't intended. I just ran into many students with a level of "tab proficiency" that had no ear for hearing chord changes, or understanding the guitar at an intuitive level--all conditions which were improved by ear training. It's great when someone plays something and you know they know and they know they know...you know? :)

  • Ear training is vital and yet somehow becoming a lost art. There's nothing like developing a comprehensive library of licks and chops... and reaching a point where you can visualize almost anything on the neck when you hear it, reducing the time to learn any song dramatically. I read music and tab of course, but have been doing everything by ear for years. Lots of impromptu scenarios out there where tab or sheet music isnt going to be available.

  • yeah i agree, i might use a tab if i need to learn it quckly or maybe if its just way too difficult to get my head round, but i definatly would recommend everyone learns by ear.

    :)

  • Tab is for dopes

  • it sounds pretty cool:)

  • celebrate good times come on!

    Kool and the gang
