I think I read once it has something to do with chasing prey. They're passing air over the roof of their mouths and it makes that sound. A lot of cats make that sound when they see birds or at least mine always does.

Actually they do it because they can't reach it. When they are inside the house looking through the window at birds sitting on a fence or something, they make that sound or "chatter" simply because they wan't it but can't reach it or get to it :)

That's probably true but I did also read they pass the air over the roof of their mouth to process the smells. Either way cats are amazing creatures and it's just plain funny when they seem to be trying to 'talk' the laser down so they can pounce it.

Whenever cats 'chatter', it's supposedly because they're frustrated that they can't get what they want to chase and possibly kill.

That's why you see a lot of chattering kittens at windows, watching birds, or squirrels. They can't get to the animals they wanna chase.

They're emitting that chattering sound that you hear, as a way to try to lure their prey closer to them. They use it when hunting, but when their target can't be reached. It works best when hiding in a bush, where they can't be visually seen.
