I would defiantly call this mediocre and I love Patti Smith, she completely changed Gloria and made it her own, she doesn't do that here. She slowed down smelled like teen spirit and added some high notes and quirky singing but it fails here. U2 gave this a bitter sweet feel, this is all bitter. I hope this is not her 'Hurt' because I believe she can do better and why? Because this is the first Patti cover I've heard were I was constantly aware that it was a cover.
holy crap I'll say. Gorgeous. Sorry I listened to this one last on the cover album, but I suppose it's good in a way. She shows so many of the others to be junior varsity.
I don't really like it... I'm not a troll or anything, and obviously the cover isn't never even better than the real thing (hah!) but this is my favorite U2 song.
sorry people, but her version was actually great. I know some people don't get why this made it onto the album, but her voice, the piano and guitar all flow well into a song about the end of the world. i've never even heard of patti smith, but i know the u2 original well and patti took what u2 did with the song and spun it a completely different direction. lounge club style worked with this particular song.
It's just not good enough without Bono's faith. He may not have the best voice in the world, but he's got soul. Heart and soul and poetry and conviction and imagination and crescendo and...well...this one put me to sleep. Sorry Patti!
so far Glasvegas doing Acrobat sounds best. Although I was quite excited to see a U2 tribute album out with Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, and Jack White performing on it (because I love them all), I have not too impressed with it. All the songs are way too slow and just not U2 sounding at all.
@Ashlibc That's what you get when you let great artists make cover versions. Some musicians slip into the song and fill out whatever's there. Artists like the ones on this album will take a song and force it into a shape they can fit in. Snow Patrol just happens to be the most U2-ish band, so the song hasn't changed as much as for example this one.
This interpretation is not bad at all. However, does it fit one's expectations compared to the original written with passion, joy and regret? No, here is my thumb down.
patti is phoning it in, when pattis still great is when she puts her mojo on, that seems to happen on stones songs, she did this with teen spirit, 'hey im patti im gonna just lounge it out' i did this with closer and im not that proud of it, you have to be an exquisite band to lounge it out, i bet trents zoo station is crazy good and i cant imagine jack white covering anything shitty.

holy crap <3 this song was just perfect. I'm not a U2 fan at all and every cover blew me away. Bono chose every artist amazingly :)

@Ashlibc I guess that's the whole point of covers... that the band that plays them give them their own spin...

I love the original of this, and usually I hate U2 covers. However, this is amazing! For me, it is definitely the best cover off the CD.
