I find it funny that after bishop d6 you say "a stronger move is . . .". Just because you analyze and critique his play does not mean that you are absolutely certain of Karpov's intentions or lines for that play. When was the last time you defeated Karpov or a player of his caliber with your "stronger" moves?
@ipatdragon That's the benefit of post-game analysis just like in any other competitive game. Learning from the best is really beneficial, especially in games like chess.
@ipatdragon Don't be such an idiot. Often times I know much stronger moves then these Grandmasters, not because I am smart, but because I have a top of the line desktop and Rybka 4. After letting rybka analyze the game position for over an hour, I can be extremely confident that that move was a bad one.
@ipatdragon dumb..... this is why he studies the games after , find better moves he could of found. without the timelimit and pressure. its easier to find better moves without the pressre and now i find itfunny that you think you said something smart....
Well im an amateur chess player from sweden. I really like your analysis of the game. very clear and easy to understand.
what i really dont like to see here in the comments are all the "why dont he just do this or that" since its very easy to understand the following train of thought; "Kasparov and karpov are two of the worlds foremost chessplayers of all time" and this is a BLITZ game.
@damthatriver09 Oh you retarded ego tripped kid.. If grand you really thinks that this video doesn't fit your way of playing chess then don't listen to it. At 2:45 Karpov decides to play bishop to d6...How can a GRANDMASTER play a dumb move like that? He's neglecting to develop his other pieces and it was a waste of a move. Generally speaking you shouldn't move the same piece twice in the opening. But more importantly this move is doing nothing for his position and most of all he's neglecting the importance of developing his other pieces.
@VitalSigns1 Bd6 is not a 'dumb' move, in fact, the real question is how anyone who probably does not know anyting about it, should critize Karpov who spent about
@fravatel Oh shut up little boy. It WAS a dumb move and everyone should be able to see that. I don't care how long Karpov spent studying the Queen's Gambit, the fact of the matter is that the guy knows NOTHING about chess.
@michaeljimpogi23 above statement maybe came from a chess beginner. Nf6 is an usual move played by a normal or strong player. That's why it was said karpov's blunder. He missed that.

@campi13072 better than Fischer and Kasparov combined? lol he was not much better than Karpov, and also if Karpov had been in better physical shape he'd probably won the 1984 match.
Karpov needed Florencio Campomanes to intercede and stop the match after 48 games. Under the conditions at that time the winner had to score 6 wins. there was a long string of draws, and then Kasparov won 3 games in a row, and Karpov was on the brink of a mental break down. Had that match continued Kasparov would have beaten him in 84.
Campomanes I believe, was like the equivalent of this, a boxing trainer or coach who was about to throw in the towel because his man couldn't get it done. Read the book Maneuvers in Moscow 86 world chess championship., it explains it way better than I can. Karpov would not have defeated Fischer in 72. Fischer was too good at that time
I feel the need to clarify the comment I made yesterday. I am in no way on the playing level of Karpov and Kasparov. All I said was Kasparov is a better player than both of them combined. However some ass clown mis interpreted that
But remember, this is Karpov, the methodic master, champion of the Petrov. Sure, white was more active and had a few tactical shots, but were they enough to push for a decisive advantage? I don't think so. But cool video anyways. :D
@jrobichess - yeah, that's what the engines are saying - but, engines are not God (at all) and the positional advantage Garry enjoyed was not winning. With correct play I think it would draw.

@XxxxTxTxxxX Because of 8...Qb4+ 9. Nc3
White accomplishes nothing and black gets his queen into b4, still its a drawish position tho.

because you can move f2 pawn up twice and check mate...
Tgoodman3 2 years ago 2

mangaissofun 2 years ago
This is a good point because Black could grind out a draw from these moves:
1.Rxh8 2. Qf7 Qc8 3. g3 Qc5 4. Qg7+ Ke6 5. Qg6+ Ke7 6. Qg7+ Ke8 7. Qxh8+ Ke7
8. Qg7+ Ke6 9. Qg6+ Ke5
Basically this is dead equal position and the best moves are for white to just check with the queen and black just move the King out of the way.
