the only beats I havent been disappointed in is ibeats, and its mainly because they're $110, and they give $70 quality so it aint THAT overpriced, but all the others are soo shit I thought these were soo great cuz dre is a hip hop mogul but disappointed the first time I put them on and I feel the sound cancelling is just taking outside noises and compensating making the music not as good I heard so many good things about audio technica ath m50 I only see 5/5 reviews for those

@cobrafied They're called "Studios". Audio equipment made for studio purposes are supposed to reference quality with a relatively neutral frequency response. These headphones are FAR from that. They shouldn't be labeled as "Studio" headphones.

Good review. A few years ago Best Buy wouldn't even let me listen to the Beats they had on display. The batteries were dead, and the idiot sales kid simply said "Why would you spend that much on headphones?" and walked away.  He lost his commission. Don't buy a product just because a celebrity endorses it. Any company that stands behind its product will have its own reputation for their quality, and won't even need to advertise.

@timramich Now a few years later I decided on some Sennheiser HD650 after using their HD428 for a year. They're pretty much the same price as the Beats, and I'm sure they will blow away any celebrity-endorsed piles of Chinese plastic crap. I am a little disappointed in Sennheiser, as I just saw they have a jewel-encrusted microphone endorsed by Katy Perry, whose vocals aren't even untouched by the time they reach the consumer.

The amplifier in the beats is for noise canceling, not to provide extra power. The beats have an impedance of 32 ohms, so have plenty of volume when powered by an average portable media player.

While it's true that dedicated headphone amplifiers that can add volume and reduce distortion in comparison to most device's built in amplifier, there is no "widespread deficiency" in built in amps that monster is trying to remedy.

@vassillioss The amplifier inside of the Beats is to POWER the headphones. An amplifier's job is to POWER the speakers by sending them a more 'amplified' analog signal. The noise cancellation is powered by it's own system.

There's no point in having two amplifiers in one headphone. The whole thing you're saying about mp3 players not having enough power to drive these headphones is simply not true. Monster never "made a decision" to include an amplifier. They made a decision to add active noise cancelation, and that decision necessitates the use of an amplifier.

What would you say about the Sennheiser HD25 ? If you tried them once, i have a pair of high end HD25, it's very very popular in the Dj sphere and i've seen thousands of them knocking about on DJ's head or on TV, like cameraman, sound-recording and the likes. Personnaly it's the only kind of true professional gear i own, and it feels amazing. I tried Pioneer HDJ-2000, they sounded like the treble were squished by the bass and mid. But it sure sounded a lot more deep, a better stage experience.

The only real way to go for headphones is to stick to studio-grade products. If you want more bass or treble, AMP + EQ it. I'm saddened by how many people know of beats but haven't heard of Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Beyer Dynamic,  Shure, Koss, AKG, Grado, etc.

FYI, noise cancelling is generally overrated. In general it's better to concentrate on noise ISOLATION. My personal suggestion for cans would be BeyerDynamic DT770s (80 ohms) but that's just my suggestion.
