I made something like this from an aluminum match container. I took a real pine cone, cut all the little petels off, snipped the pointy (inner) ends off them, and then went along with a hot glue gun and stuck them around the tube in concentric circles. When the tube was covered, I glued the end portion of the original pine cone to the end of the match tube and it looks pretty real. It hangs on the same blue spruce I got the original cone from. Check the logs at GC1NJEZ.
And yeah, this guy is selling these things. He shows you what they look like, though, so you could build them yourself if you're handy. A lot of folks (like many of my cache friends) aren't handy, though. And having made some similar to his, I can attest he isn't charging much more than cost of materials and they look pretty well built. Cool stuff!
