My mom would often arrange for playdates with other kids and I would always just ditch them and go play by myself in my room. I never wanted friends to begin with. I just found them boring and wanted to just do things about my obsessions. My obsessions are my friends.
@misspinkpunkykat I really like your idea of your obsessions being your friends. It was the same for me; as long as I could play video games I was okay. That may be worth making a video about for me.
@SillyGayBoy You should make that video! I always found video games too hard and perfered games like Sims where you don't have to play someone else's storyline. My newest obsession is Sonic the Hedgehog, but I got into it via the cartoons, not the games.
@misspinkpunkykat I didn't realize there were still cartoons of that on TV but I loved the Sonic games as a kid and even as an adult. Yeah video games were my drug of choice all throughout growing up. Having friends wasn't really something I cared much about or going out; as long as I could play video games I was happy. That may be important to talk about. Other boys can be obsessed with video games too but I don't think to the extent I was. Thanks for the encouragement.
@misspinkpunkykat Made the video it's up now currently titled "Video games & Aspergers" thanks very much for the encouragement it gives me the push I need; as I have many ideas and I'm not sure which to do first.
@mc21atc Every person is different but I would guess he would like something that would have a real practical use to it, something that he has said he likes. For Christmas people often give really random stuff and I'm not sure if that would be appreciated. If he's like me; we want all our things to have a purpose.
@SillyGayBoy Yeah he says he just wants food but I just wish would enjoy reading a book or do something relaxing but he just watches TV all day and is completely lonely...PS...I just found out that he had a meltdown with his sister and just burned the last family bridge he had left :( I'm afraid he will be lonely for the rest of his life! Do you think a support group would help him or do you recommend anything like that?? Thank you for your reply.
@mc21atc A lot of people with Asperger's do not want help and may act like they want it or they may not look like they want it at all. A lot of people with AS are seen as lacking empathy or emotions or blame others for their problems. Looks like you know what he may want for a present like an author or food he likes. A support group would help and there are online ones and I talk to people on YouTube with AS all the time. I just go to Autism meetings once a month so let me know about good ones.
@sirtinycreep I dunno; can't think of one on the spot. Sometimes I do normal things to me and they are hilarious to someone else. I gave up making "jokes" because it didn't work; I can't throw people off like that with my honest nature; but I'll do goofy stuff cus I feel like it and people can find that funny.
Fascinating. My child has ASD and has been mesmerized by C.George for years. Secondly, playdates are constantly being left alone, so we stopped having kids over. I was wondering if it bothered you not having friends, or did you? Do you have any suggestions regarding "discipline"?
@richmanpoman1 (Part 1) I believe Asperger people have friends for different reasons then neurotypicals, at least I did. I needed the learning and life experience. It was usually me that ended the friendships and I didn't really care, as sometimes people just don't make the cut. I was a quiet kid so I didn't get a whole lot of discipline but martial arts with Asperger kids is a must which will teach discipline coordination and much more.
@richmanpoman1 (Part 2) It is interesting that we both liked Curious George and it's possible we were both drawn to it because of his being on the outside looking in attitude with learning about stuff. I don't remember much about it now except that it would always say he wasn't supposed to do something or whatever and then "but George was curious".
Thanks so much for making this video. I dated someone with aspergers syndrome and i never realised there was something wrong until I noticed the inappropriate jokes, that they didn't understand spontaneity and hated being late. I'm very laid back and he didn't understand at all. It was very difficult to understand what I could and couldn't do around him cause he wouldn't understand it. I also feel his obsession was lying cause he lied all the time. But thanks so much for making the video.
@GarretFARRYA Thanks I'm glad you appreciate it. Lying is uncommon for people with Asperger's they are usually honest to a fault. It's hard for people in relationships to understand how their brains are different and I want to make more adult videos about it.
@SillyGayBoy that is interesting. He definitely wasn't honest lol. I'll look forward to seeing them. It's good to have someone speaking about these issues. Makes it that little bit clearer :)
My friend with Asperger's is often oblivious to his environment. The other day he almost told a racist joke about Japanese people while five feet away from a Japanese woman holding a sign in Japanese! I kid u not.
@OnionTrollsAlliance It's very difficult for them to see what things look like for other people; or to look around to check on something first. They tend to blurt things out sometimes too and turrets goes with Aspergers/autism a lot I hear; which might be why I blurt things out talking to myself sometimes.
@UnversedSong It's hard for us to smile, look people in the eyes, lie, or have a sense of humor quite like anybody but that can be a good thing if we know how to use it. For me I "do what I feel like" but don't necessarily make a joke; there's a difference; and people sometimes find that funny. I like to tease people too especially girls.
This sounds more and more like my mother. I have to be so literal with her, she only understands perfectly accurate instructions. And no matter how often she agrees to stop she will continue to ask question after question. Anyhoo..do you know any othe fols with Asbergers? Do your jokes sense to them, do there's make sense to you?
@warmgulfwind I won't speak for all Asperger people because I know I don't even make jokes anymore; but I have seen others make jokes that really only seem to make sense to them. I've heard about kids laughing at their own jokes when nobody else does; I guess I used to do that but I was much younger and learned not to.
@SugarInHisBlood What kinds of stuff do you do? I've done random movie lines that make little sense to the conversation; but they make sense in my head; never again. I can't take the weird looks.
@OnionTrollsAlliance Yeah I made another video about Asperger's people asking too many questions; it's common for them to be fixated on what they need to know. There's so much they wonder about that doesn't make sense to them and it's easy to obsess on it.
very helpful video- thank you!
