I do not know how old this film is--but that train still runs on the section from Antonito CO to Chama NM. It is now owned by the Colorado and New Mexico governments. The locomotives now read "Cumbres and Toltec" as the Rio Grande has been absorbed by the U.P.

@dbaker3751 Actually he did slow down. He slowed down to a complete stop. It's just hard to tell because a train cant reduce its rate of speed very fast. Also the Engineer couldn't have seen the cattle until he was right up on them, because they were in a ravine and behind bushes. He only had 11 seconds too act. couple that with having 2 locomotives and braking doesn't become as simple as a lever. communication and unison are now involved. On that note I think your accusations are insensitive.

You obviously have no idea how trains work, how long they take to stop, especially when there are two steam locomotives with two engineers. Do you know how long it takes a locomotive to apply the pressure the brakes of an entire consist? You can SEE where he did blow the whistle by the white steam behind the black smoke and steam from the stack. The white steam is from him blowing the whistle, that's also how you can tell the sound isn't original to the video.

Especially when you're coming up on a bridge. Emergency stops increase the risk of derailment, which in the case of tank cars, can result in something far worse than a cow getting ran over. Think about the big picture, would you run your car into a tree to avoid a dog?

The "smoke" you actually see is large particles of carbon dust. They are too heavy to enter into the atmosphere and cause and negative effects. They simply will fall back to earth; right back where it came from with no effect. Before you go off on me that it will contaminate water sources, you're wrong. Water purification is accomplished by none other than carbon, the same stuff in your expensive Brita filter. As far as the other emissions..no worse than what comes out of your hybrid.
