Simply amazing...it takes me back to the years of my youth..I listen to "my back pages" every now and then even though my heart haches a bit when I listen to this piece of music....greetings from Italy...
Great song...........as to the Vietnam War............another war that shouldn't have been fought. Luckily I avoided it and didn't support it as we had no intention of winning it.
At 22 and headed for VietNam on a chartered TWA flight this song was on the music program. I had heard some of the Byrds' music but not this one. I did make it back safely one year later and now when I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes. It holds a special place in my memories of the events and people I came in contact with during my "tour" of 'Nam.
Thank-you for sharing your experience with us here. This song is amazing, and seems many people have personal connections to it (as you certainly do). Your comment is appreciated, all the best to you in 2012.
@TheGriffonr Glad to see you made it back. I just missed getting sent there myself. To hear this song now makes so much more sense as an old fart. Great song, best version.
@TheGriffonr I'm as few years younger than you and,as a result,I became "of age" when things were winding down in SE Asia.I joined up but was never sent there.I know what you mean about the military and memories...particularly music memories. There are songs that *still* bring back very unhappy memories of,say,BCT. Glad you made it back!
Hey there all you Hippies, Wasn't it great to here all these tunes when things were easier and more FUN. Di-spite the War we all were having a great time listening to great tunes as the Byrds plus many, many others. Just another passing era.
I was not alive during the 60's, but it's my favorite era as far as music. I don't see why music can't still have the same feeling as it did in the past. I'd like to think that I saw the 1960s personally, but I'm younger than that now.
Sadly, the lady on Dylan's arm (at 1:00) is not Joan Baez. I am convinced, that by 1963, Joan Baez was madly in love with Bob Dylan. I believe she saw Dylan as the right person to express, in music & lyrics, her beliefs in the noble struggle for peace & civil rights. I also believe she saw this man as someone who could lead her through the personal journey of life itself. Sadly, this was never to be. I marched (against Vietnam) with Joan in '68 (Santa Monica, CA.) ~ she is my hero, always.
Great posting. Recall well this song months before I volunteered for the still existent draft back in late '67.
the song is great and the words flow true--amazing though how some ibeciles on the political left look to co-opt anything that even 'seems" like it's anti-everything.
Lyrics are just incredible....only a genius could pen them.....great harmonies....great guitar work.....Roger McGuinn pure talent.....only Dylan could write this....
Just a heads up to all those who love & enjoy this great Byrds' cover of Bob Dylan. The Hollies also did a great version of this song and I would suggest that you take a listen. It's so different but so special. The words are, of course, the key to this song but the differences between the Byrds and the Hollies recording of this song, though significant, are both (in their own way) so so beautiful. With all due respect to RoryNights great lineup of music ~ please take a listen to the Hollies
I didnt know about the Hollies version. Thank-you again! I am going to take a listen for sure! I love the song, and understand what your saying about the words, but also the differences.. what an amazing song. And the great great artists that performed it, wow! All the best MrRonnieG.
@RoryNights ~ Thanks for your kind words. Of the seven Dylan songs that the Byrds covered, this is easily their best. I still recall, on my 21st birthday, April 12, 1968 ~ several of my best friends & I lip-syncing the 45 RPM record of this Byrds' classic and it was I who played McGuinn's beautiful gutiar riff on my 360-12 Rickenbacker air gutiar. The memories of those friends and the music of that time never leave me. :) The 60's were, indeed, the best of times ~ the worst of times.
This is such a wonderful experience to share, thank-you so much! The song has an effect on me too, but no experience like yours. Music is a great thing, as it takes us places. Enjoy your memories :) Thanks again, Christine
I grew up with the Byrds (b: 1947) and believe, to this day, that they were the best 60's band EVER to originate out of L.A. (my home town). Gene Clark might have been the "father" of the Byrds but it was Roger McGuinn's driving 12 string 360-12 Rickenbacker that provided the Byrds with their trademark signature sound. Mcguinn, Clark, Hillman, Crosby and (later) Graham Parsons ~ they made some special 60's musical magic.
Thanks for your insightful comment. I love 60's music, although I was a little late to the era. There are playlists on my channel for The Byrds, Gene Clark, Dillard & Clark, and The 60's !! All fantastic! This is my favorite Bryds song, and always will be :) Your mention on Roger McGuinn.. I recently made a video for the Chestnut Mare song composed by him. Great talent all around! Great decade for music! Thanks again, cheers!
Great song, rich with meaning, that brings back such memories. I'm only 47, so I was a wee 2-year old at the time, but somehow I wish I had lived an earlier time. I'd probably have been fighting (voluntarily) in Vietnam. When I was a young man, I yearned to test myself on the field of battle. As an "old man" with a 24 and 18 year old, my perspective has changed. Anyway, this brings me back to an era.........thanks!!!!
Your very welcome, sorry for the late reply to your comment. Its a great song, one of the very best.. loaded with meaning, and memories for many! Thank-you for your comment!
Oh yeah, this definitely had the pulse of the '60's! Kids walkin' around with peace buttons, bell bottoms, and just swooning to this sound. McGuinns guitar really put a Cool spin to this.
I love this song and the video is superb! A song so many of us can relate to. Your videos always make me smile, snap my fingers and /or tap my foot. Thank you, Christine.
this is just timeless we so need this sort of music today the 60's is a sadly lost time for everyone and i was born in 64 so too young to have been there.
This video is a piece of artwork, RoryNights; the super pictures, & then you zoom them in and let us just get into their faces. Subscribe me. Beautiful!
Hey Christine! I like it!! I really like the awesome pics and the frames made for some really cool slides!! You got tired of workin on it huh?? Haha!! I started smilin when I read that part in your description but you know, I couldn't find any sticky parts!! Haha!! I'm sorry you had a little trouble, but it looks just perfect to me so, as you've requested, I'll go easy on ya!! lol!!
The truth is...it's another great video with a wonderful song and fantastic pics Christine! 5 Stars!
Hey Robert great to see you! Thanks for your nice words.. those frames were fun to do, just hard setting them lol. I first tried to make a photo album style video.. and it was even harder! lol. The Ed Sullivan show slide sticks sometimes..and another later.. but maybe its not that noticeable yeah! Thanks for going easy on me, as always you leave great comments!
those were the days Christine, what a great time, I was a child at this time, but I love the music of this time, great vid again. Damn Sony, but I can see it in the little window, lol
ya those were the days.. back to childhood eh Steffen. I had some confusion with the date.. as my source has 1966 on it, but other info online says 1967.. but anyways, the 60s were great years for music. I was also a little girl..listening to music from ever since I can remember.. but this I heard later and it remained my favorite ever since. thanks for coming and commenting too.. this Sony is making it a trip to manouvere around.. but we're managing. Cheers my friend!
Yes Christine! It's a blast from the past…We used to buy those "flower-power" stickers at the Ben Franklin store, and put them on our roller skates. The kids who had the most stickers were always the coolest!
Hey Dan this is great! Ya blast from the past :)) I think your story of the flower power stickers is so cool.. I used to roller skate too.. but we didnt have those stickers. I guess we're all getting old.. nice memories eh..
