For those interested in solar powered stirling engines, I have an idea for stationary stirling with the parabolic dish mounted on equatorial mount. This makes tracking the sun simple (time based) and should allow your engine to run all day as the sun shines.
That is just an example of how the arms of a caterpillar bulldog works, is called pressure, less air = more pressure i think is second or first Bernoulli law.
Well it's obviously a pressure differential, due to abrupt changes in temperature that drive this thing, but it's not a result of "less air." Stirling engines for the most part are sealed units, so it's almost the same amount of air.
No it not air pressure, but because is not like those tubes you find in banks in size and shape so the heat would be the fuel while the ones in the banks are without any fuel, just Bernoulli law, i think the second.
i like this video..how long did you spend to make this?I spent 5x90 minutes to do mine.haa.everyone knws why sterling engine is now being refocused by engineers around the world..Its efficiency is sohigh(note:lotsa higher than a steam engine)but the size and the slow start up need real improvement before it can be of good use.Japan engine companies are making huge progress in sterling engine improvements so tat they can replace normal combustion engine in future. this is the solid fact. superass
Dear you tubers lets just give clochner a big hand for able to construct a sterling engine with such simple materials~unlike some ass that cant even do that~haha...I did one for for my college project too..well a solid metal beta type though..
dear superass~you just REMOVE YOUR STUPID comments~thanks~that was an eyesore~behold the world superass said "sterling engine is NOT an efficient engine" laugh our head off..but he learnt the lesson and removed his comments. well. The ingenious thing about Stirling engines is that the working fluid is in a closed volume: you never need to add any more. All you need is a heat source. Unlike a steam engine, which requires the constant addition of water as well as heat.

And I'm just trying to tell this other guy that it's not pointless and stupid. What am I supposed to say? It's pretty hard to have a decent conversation with someone as ignorant as he is.
Initially when Dr. Stirling invented his engine he called it an "air engine" to differentiate it from the steam engine. Why? Back then, steam boilers had a propensity to explode, and kill people. Which his didn't.
Pressure changes result from heating/cooling working fluid; heat the compressed gas, cool the expanded.
This video, the commentary and everything about this video redeems all the stupidity I've seen on Youtube and makes me want to restore my faith in humanity.
its very simple actually. It utilizes the hot air in the chamber. hot air wants to rise, so the hot air raises the lower piston, and that reciprocates the upper piston, pushing the air back into the lower piston. as long as a heat source is available, the engine will run on its own.
hello, I'm studing Mechatronics Engineering, and I have to do a stirling engine, and I want to do something like you, but I don't know what is the thing that is inside the tube. I supose that is something cold, but can you tell me please what is inside.
Ahhh!! something more, I didnt find the pistol that you have, so I use a geringer, Im gonna send you a photo of my experiment (If I can), and Could you tell me whats wrong with it???
Thank you, And Im here again, because I decide to do this experiment to present it on my university, I did all the things that in this page said, but my prototype doesn´t run.
I need your help because the tube up, but it doesn´t down, what can I do??? What kind of gas do I have to use???. Please answer me as fast as you can, because I have to present the experiment the day after tomorrow.
the black stuff at the end is soot from doing the experiment several times. and No there isn't fluid in the system, it's just the expanding and contracting gases that causes the engine to cycle.
But I dont understand something. I read that you need a cold fluid to change the piston direction, and my question is: Does the pistol have a hole on the tube, to obtain a cold air from the enviroment to move down the pistol?
I dont speak very well english so excuse me if I committed a mistake.
you dont need any hole, when the marbles go down the air goes up till the cold side of the tube... pyrex is a very very bad heat-transporter so one side keeps cold while the other one is very hot.
my english is very bad too, i hope you to undestand me... look my stirling engine video searching by the key words "stirling raul".
Looks like those fisher-technik cylinders I used to have when I was a kid. I thought they went banckrupt, just googled around & it's still produced Yeah great....
well, it's not a string lifting it up, it's just the piston. The wire was necessary to pull the test tube down again. This was a problem of friction...
Very impressive. Did you do any kind of calculations before you built it? I'm working on a stirling engine myself but i count on my luck that it works ;)
Well, not really. I could have done calculations cause this was part of my studies. But in this case it was just good luck. By the way, the size of the marbles in conjunction with the tube diameter is rather important. But most important: everything has to be lack proof. That's it.
This is just from looking at the video, but it looks like the air in the black thing expands from the heat, slips by the marbles and raises the cylinder. Then the marbles roll to the other side, which decreases the pressure so that they roll back and it starts over.
That's real close. You have the heat part right. Then the marbles roll into the hot end, and the air is forced to the cool end. When the air cools it contracts and pulls the cylinder down. The motion is caused by the cycle of air heating and cooling, heating and cooling- expanding and contracting.
Well, as I know the stirling cycle is actually one of the most efficient...but I'm not sure...this stirling engine shown in the video is definetly not the most efficient...that's certain
we can always increase the efficiency if we use a good isolant, but in thermodynamic for engineers book, it said that the CARNOT cycle is the most efficient, wich is pratically a reversible cycle, but we know its impossible.
Thats rigth, but the ideal stirling cycle actually has the same efficiency as the carnot cycle, however there are many practical problems in getting up the efficiency of an actual stirling engine.
please remove other comment i hit button too soon my question is this: how do you seal the bottom tube? and have the piston coming out of it? please help out with this question because i am working on a stirling idea and i need to kow how to seal everything and make hermetic with pistons coming out of chamber
The piston is a pneumatic cylinder by LEGO. It comes out by expansion of air. Everything (cork, tubes, plugs) is sealed with silicone. Plugs and tube have to fit 100%. The main problem is to get it done leak-proof...
como fazer isso? D:

1) Flame heats air in test tube;
2) Air expands through plastic hose, extending pneumatic cylinder and lifting test tube;
3) Marbles roll down to hot side of test tube, displacing air to cold side of test tube;
4) Air cools, contracting pneumatic cylinder and lowering test tube;
5) Marbles roll down to cold side of test tube, displacing air back to hot side;
6) GOTO 1

hows this work?, it looks like hot air rises sending the weight down along with the piston.
as the piston moves down the air presure pushes the weight up.
if the hot air is still there, how dose the presure overcome its self?
also I thought sterling engings used cold air.
where is the cold air? is the differace in heat blocked from the piston and the weight?
jhwtech 4 years ago
1. air heats, pushes the cool-hot chamber up.
2. balls roll into the hot chamber, shunting the hot air to the cold section, that is not heated.
3. air cools, the hydraulic cylinder depressurizes, the chamber lowers.
4. the balls push the air back into the hot chamber.
Rinse and repeat.

You got a string lifting it up, I can see the hook its attached to. :(
215858452845 4 years ago
well, it's not a string lifting it up, it's just the piston. The wire was necessary to pull the test tube down again. This was a problem of friction...
clochner 4 years ago
yeah i see it now
215858452845 4 years ago
never heard of a stirling engine before?? it works because a difference in heat not by a string..
bobbie001 4 years ago
Uh... what?
This isn't caused by a string either.
DoctorAwesome 4 years ago
thats not holding a string it attaches the piston
masterful921 4 years ago
Very impressive. Did you do any kind of calculations before you built it? I'm working on a stirling engine myself but i count on my luck that it works ;)
candylady 4 years ago
Well, not really. I could have done calculations cause this was part of my studies. But in this case it was just good luck. By the way, the size of the marbles in conjunction with the tube diameter is rather important. But most important: everything has to be lack proof. That's it.
clochner 4 years ago
I see, so i have to run some tests to get it working. I will try that out, thank you
candylady 4 years ago
it was done just by trial and error...

If heat by gas it could make a powerful vibrator for the girls!:O)

well right, but then we should think of one moving back and forth ;-)

i heard of a circle stirling but this one is amazing

how much HP can these stirling engine produce?
treborly 4 years ago
Very clever and motivating
jiritom 4 years ago 2
Probably works fine until the marbles get good and warm...
mitsudave 4 years ago 2
That really a good trrasformaton from heat to movement.
Is any body here who could tell me how it works?
carl6022 4 years ago
This is just from looking at the video, but it looks like the air in the black thing expands from the heat, slips by the marbles and raises the cylinder. Then the marbles roll to the other side, which decreases the pressure so that they roll back and it starts over.
herteby 4 years ago
That's real close. You have the heat part right. Then the marbles roll into the hot end, and the air is forced to the cool end. When the air cools it contracts and pulls the cylinder down. The motion is caused by the cycle of air heating and cooling, heating and cooling- expanding and contracting.
16strings 4 years ago
I guess the efficiency of that cycle is very low.
But good idea!
AtoK47 4 years ago
Well, as I know the stirling cycle is actually one of the most efficient...but I'm not sure...this stirling engine shown in the video is definetly not the most efficient...that's certain
clochner 4 years ago
we can always increase the efficiency if we use a good isolant, but in thermodynamic for engineers book, it said that the CARNOT cycle is the most efficient, wich is pratically a reversible cycle, but we know its impossible.
AtoK47 4 years ago
Thats rigth, but the ideal stirling cycle actually has the same efficiency as the carnot cycle, however there are many practical problems in getting up the efficiency of an actual stirling engine.

nice waste of energy
dwiggs77 4 years ago
Actually, the Stirling Engine is one of the most efficient, but also one of the weakest, of engine designs.
scienceguy8 4 years ago 2
this engine is ,in my estimate only using a fraction of the energy put into it. and is what i ment to say.

please remove other comment i hit button too soon my question is this: how do you seal the bottom tube? and have the piston coming out of it? please help out with this question because i am working on a stirling idea and i need to kow how to seal everything and make hermetic with pistons coming out of chamber
ncbookz 4 years ago
The piston is a pneumatic cylinder by LEGO. It comes out by expansion of air. Everything (cork, tubes, plugs) is sealed with silicone. Plugs and tube have to fit 100%. The main problem is to get it done leak-proof...

AICD BOMB
Supplies
You need pool acid (hydrochloric acid aka muriatic acid), some tin foil, and a 2-litter bottle.
Directions
1. Roll some aluminum foil up as if you are rolling a breadstick
2. Place it inside the 2-liter bottle
3. CAREFULLY put the pool acid in the bottle
4. Put the cap on
5. Shake it up and CHUCK IT
6. BOOM...!
