  • "Dance You into the Sunlight"...where to begin. This young man's genius for alternate, and often humorous diversive and radical ruminations is stunning. I find myself laughing through tears, sobbing through comedy when he speaks. This one is particularly trenchant. My youngest child was "born on film": videotaped so much that her first destination when she first walked, was to toddle over to me, grab the lens cap with her chubby hands, and attempt to place it on the lens. Lesson learned.

  • The reason we always rely on you to say something though is because anyone can do it. Anyone here can do speak on camera with intelligence and confidence, if they tried, but no one will be able to do it like you can. You know?

  • Everyone is still trying to find that as celebrities. The thing is that whenever you are a celebrity, you are either treated like some sort of Godly lifeform or an alien, mostly because in the cameras, they don't feel like you and me. There is something about the camera that makes people think with the idea that you are much more special than us because you can do stuff in ways we really can't. It feels a lot like living vicariously through the body of one talented person. (shrugs)

  • Some interesting points. Agree MIchael showed love like no-one else & the mixed blessings of the media. I also believe because he didn't get the love he needed as a child, he was looking for love as an adult. Don't we all? He looked for it from his fans but he also said he knew he had to find it elsewhere personally. He also found it through charity work. I don't believe Michael did anything ugly to others, such as any pedophile acts, if that's what you're implying.

  • Powerful...

  • so what your trying to say is we are still human after all

  • Well said..."Not about the cameras"...Still, one has to know when to stop. At some point the blame can't be placed on everyone/everything/anything else.

  • Thanx, well said

  • 5:31 "possibly doing ugly things to people ..."? I was a little bit disappointed here.

You should not include what the media told you. Tell us what you thought when you saw him, his work and heard his words. Everything else are repetitions of media BULLshit.

  • @strangefruit64 very nice. i likes. thank you so much

  • Beautiful!

  • this is one of the best statements on the life and meaning of Michael Jackson. Thank You.

  • Brilliant in articulation, depth and hope!

  • Wonderful video and really deep message.

I think that the whole matter just comes down to a really simple moral - we as fans should learn to separate the artist from the person. We should just focus on the art and leave all these people's personal lives alone, just so they can remain personal. That way they can send their message and create their art without loosing themselves in the process. A person is NOT a product. A person is more than the product he creates - or less. R.I.P. Michael.

  • brilliant, brilliant reflection on the king of pop...

  • Very beautiful video.

  • you are amazing.

  • What a profound reflection!

  • Great vid and nice way of putting things. But I was just wondering, what exactly do you mean (at 1:50) by "quite possibly doing ugly things to people"?

  • Who is Lauren and Deangelo?

  • the singers, Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo.

  • Polanski was convicted in a court of law and he drugged, raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl while she begged him to let her go home. WTF do you think that piece of shit needs a "pass" for?

  • @scribegurl Ok. Let me give you a little history into Michael and the media. It has been proved repeatedly that Michael didn't do anything to those boys, and that it was obvious that the parents were just looking for a quick buck. The media jumped on the story because Michael will sell papers and make people watch. The media don't give a damn if what they are saying is true or not, they just want you to watch and will do anything to grab your attention.

  • @scribegurl It's funny because Polanski ACTULLY did something to that girl AND NEVER spend a minute in jail.In fact he left the country .Jackson on the other hand was blackmailed by a familly in 93 for money.Jackson refused to give them cash, they went to the media. if Jackson was gulity of anything, i believe he would have given them the money BEFORE the whole thing became known to everyone. I think you should really learn the facts before you open your mouth.

  • Polanski was found guilty in a court of law and then fled the country.

Mj, there was no evidence and he was found innocent.

  • Thank you for this video, Doc. Right on point.

  • this is honestly why i got pissed when emcees and producers started making remixes and "tribute songs". Everyone more than ever was using this man's death for their own gain. Even some of my own emcee friends did it. Made me question a lot of shit. Thanks for putting this out there.

  • Jay, you're a brilliantly talented commentator.. thank you for your efforts, time, and most of all, thanks for sharing.. Peace and Solidarity!!

  • Real. I appreciate this vid on an extremely high level.

  • THIS is what I've been looking for. Thank you so much for THINKING and for sharing your insight. I've been so struck by MJ's death and by his life and his art. I never could put my thoughts together like you. I'm so glad I found your site. THANK YOU.

  • great video, great insights. WTF is up with the crazy editing. Poetry slam, I get it.... relax now and let the man speak. Lauryn + D'Angelo I feel *that*.

  • Damn dude...you brought it 100% real! Thank you for that

  • Wow, powerful! Thanks for summing up what most of us are thinking. You should have been in one of the memorial shows. This should have been on air somewhere! Great work! I got choked up around 5:02 in to this. Loved it. I'm now a subscriber!

  • me too. 5:00 till the end just brought tears to my eyes. How I wish he could have experienced such love.

  • Yeah, exactly

  • Listening to you is just amazing. I can understand every single word and enjoy them, even if I'm french and I usually need two or three listenings to understand the whole message of a video... congratulations for your voice and for your message.

  • I normally do not comment on videos but this video moved me so much. The thoughtfulness of it really touched me. I will have to share this with my family.

  • wow

  • amen!

  • shit

  • Great Video , Homie!

  • The most poignant commentary on Michael's life I've heard

  • Not quite possibly doing ugly things to other people.

    He was acquitted.

Have respect for your justice system and the hundreds of hard-working people, including but not limited to, investigators, forensic scientists, jurors, judges, attorneys, witnesses, and police officers who worked on that case to bring it to a justifiable end.

You don't have to agree with it, but saying or alluding to the opposite result of that case as factual is throwing the work of all of those people in their faces.

  • Thank you, so much for this comment. I wish people could see that. They focus on Michael, instead of those who went after him. And those who did what they could to find the truth, and they did.

  • I swear man... illdoc j smooth CAN DO NO WRONG!

  • Wow...This is by far the best reflection on MJ I've seen -even though I don't like his music.

  • Thanks for the compliment now in your backyard.... A NY'er.

     Punch

  • So many things to say to this, none of which haven't already been said, I'm sure. What can best cover all of them, regardless of agreement or disagreement, love for Michael Jackson, or hatred, are two simple words:

    If only...

  • AMEN!!!!!!!!

  • REAL TALK

  • This is one of the most insightful things I've ever heard in my life. Thank you so much for breaking things down to a level that anyone can understand.

You're a very intelligent human being. The world needs more people who think like you.

  • I'm so glad you knocked down the little hater long enough to make this. This is why I come back to watch you speak. Eloquent.

  • in the midst of the media circus that's gone down in the wake of michael's death, i'm glad somebody's looking at the tremendous mess that was made of this beautiful child's life and saying: "okay, what have we learned here...?" that is really the only response we can have to this particularly american tragedy. thank you, sir, and well done.

  • This is one of your best, if not your best video yet, man. Truly insightful and awesomely put.

  • your thoughts are right on

  • I truly enjoyed the acknowledgment and extrapolation of the tragedy that was the life of MJ.

And also touching on the subjects of our relationship with media in general as well as MJ's and how it may/may not work to connect and disconnect us as a group.

The word "Insightful" doesn't do it justice

All I can say is .......word.

  • Damn, you're good. You are just damn good. I'm a university professor and i use your stuff in the classroom to talk about alternate ways to create and express a position, to craft an argument. Damn. Good. Thank you.

  • Mike's beauty stopped once the ugliness took hold, one could argue. He hasn't made a decent song in almost 20 years. And the industry has been doing what it did Michael for years. If anything, he should have been better able to deal with it, given his bros and sisters. His "ugly" issues...as loved as he was by Black people, I don't see any support for his crimes against nature in the camera. Perhaps, being Black wasn't enough for dude. At the end of the day, crazy and drugs don't mix.

  • This editing is reallllllllllllly annoying. Had to say it. Good thoughts though.

  • Amazing. Thank you.

  • That... was.... beautiful. Thank you for speaking such truth.

  • Thank you. Thank you so much for the humane yet very real approach.

  • You put my jumbled thoughts of disarray into perfect poignant prose... practically. Thank you.

  • Simply fuckin excellent. And I don't usually curse.

  • Nice 1 Jay....

  • Well put.

  • That was awesome. You are so on point with your words. i really enjoy visiting you channel.

    God bless.

    -Rochelle.

  • Well said! Thank you!

  • thank you for making this. you are very eloquent, and finally someone said this. it brought tears to my eyes. i wish 8 year old michael could've seen that too.

  • This was a great video, as always. Sorry to ask, but who are Loren (SP?) and D'Angelo? I'm not very into the hip-hop scene so maybe that's why I don't know.

  • Ah -- Lauren Hill and D'Angelo...I think I answered my own question.

  • right :)

  • They're both R&B singers. Lauren Hill's a bit screwed up but I don't know a lot about D'Angelo.

  • you gave me goosebumps. :-)

  • thank you, thank you so much.

you've said so many things i've been trying to say about the whole passing on of micheal jackson, but i couldn't find the right ways to put them across.

    thank you.

  • both sharp, and smooth. simultaneously deep, right on, informed and informative - I bet when some big media comp. tries to snatch you up, you'll be that rarity that can remain true, while reaching the masses (btw: I hope you stay on 'BAI forever brother Jay) - peace and solidarity.. and thanks as always!

  • makes me feel like a monster watching this video. you are so inspirational.

  • Thanks, man. I confess I was unable to feel anything about Michael's death because I didn't want to participate, even through viewing, in the media circus that I felt was partially responsible for the sadness that was his life. You did a great job of putting it all in perspective.

  • You just single-handedly washed all the TV BS away. Thank you. I wasn't sure how long I'd have to look for something to do that.

  • thank you. that's all I can say THANK YOU!!!

  • You are a philosopher. An inspiration, really. Everything you say is so real, and you always hit the nail right on the head.

  • WOW!

  • It might be that we run out of money, energy and plastic, so we can't build cameras for much longer.

  • This nigga belongs on Def poetry.

  • Whoa, I think you said it all and said it right. Thanks, man.

  • damn, always on point. thanks for posting this.

  • Yo if you were to write a book....I will be first in line to buy it. Real talk. Enlightening, once again.

  • very well said

  • Thats what I was saying

  • Awesome! Thanks.

  • I've made two videos paying my tribute to MJ, but couldn't really do much after that, because drawing out the topic would make the camera "about me, in that way".

  • Always love to hear jsmooth's opinion... saw it a few days ago and it gets better everytime i hear it!

    Preach JSmooth!

  • Preach J!

  • It's not like I missed the eloquent and thought-provoking points made in the video, but where the hell can we see the rest of that girl straight doin that shit? She killed it.

  • Incredible. Well done, sir.

  • i wanna be jay smooth when i grow up ahah ..

  • This is damn-near perfect as far as what needs to be said about Michael's legacy. I salute you; job well done. Maybe if he heard this before he passed, he would have found some peace. Maybe he did hear something along the lines of this before he passed. I hope that is the case. RIP, MJ and MAD KUDOS 2 YOU, ILLDOC!

  • My dude...this was so on point; it gave me chills. Mike Jack would be proud...and maybe if he had people like you around, things would have been very different. You are one of the illest. Thank you.

  • well put, well said

  • amazing, just plain amazing

  • I wish things could have been different for him, I think that's what breaks my heart about his passing. I hope at least through his 3 children he was able to experience love in its purest form. Love without demand or purchase. Love just because. Sadly, looks like by the time they came along, the damage was too far gone. I pray Michael is in heaven, at peace. He deserves it...and I pray Joe doesn't repeat the cycle w/ MJs kids..as he already seems to be planning. The Jackson 3. Jeeze.

  • I'm so glad you said what you said. I'm not going to think so much of myself to say that I fully understand Michael, but I have an understanding of certain things about him...and understanding that seems like it should be common knowledge, he was a CHILD that never knew normal. He was a CHILD that never felt truly loved. What tools was he equipted w/ to be "normal"? Why must we brand him a FREAK for his sacrifice?

  • Thank you.

  • illdoc, jay smooth, continues to pour knowledge and understanding into my life.

and the girl dancing near the end, well thats just damn beautiful

    much respect.

  • Beautiful words! No matter what happened, he's dead. No matter the way he lived, coz he lived the way he wanted. he tried to make a better place to live in it. He was a big child, he's Peter Pan. I'm sure he'll live in our hearts forever. The world should learn to much from Michael Jackson. The world accused him and judged him unjustly, but the truth always comes to light. Michael is now at the place he always belonged, Neverland, and there he's going to wait for us. The legend has begun. RIP MJ

  • A fantastic video. All that HAD to be said in PUBLIC! YOu spoke a bit fast, I had to listen to some parts several times but all in all you did a GREAT job! I hope more people watch it and see how Michael´s story really was and as you say, learn from it!

  • Wow, that is incredible! Very well-said!

  • Damn, dawg!

    you're tha shit!

    right on.

  • I think that was the first time I've cried listening to anything about Michael's death, because I had been numbed by all the sensationalisml. Thank you for posting something beautiful and poignant.

  • Well said

  • W-O-W!!

  • Ugh, you're so helpful.

Thanks. You often times influence my perspective on issues profoundly, like now with this video.

  • Damn that is such a good point. I never thought about it in that manner. You are so absolutely right. I thank you for bringing that to everyone's attention. Man I miss Michael and really wish I had the chance to know him personally instead of just by his music. Michael really was a product and born or breeded to be a brand. I could see in him that it really was a struggle. I know that the stage was his escape and safe haven.

  • I enjoyed your commentary. Thought provoking and definitely very humane.

  • limitless opportunity for liberation and for imprisonment

  • Great video!

  • Great talk. 5 stars. Will be subscribing.

  • that was deep... for real... props

  • 4:30- Get it girl.

  • For real.

  • another great post.

  • u get really tech with it but well said brother

  • amazing.

  • Beautiful.

  • thank you.

  • truth...

    awesome, thank you.

  • You are amazing! I have watch everyone one of your videos today in a row.. You are very well spoken, and speak only to the honest truth that a lot of people dont like to hear or hide from. I love hearing your insight to everything. Keep on going!!!!

  • Please be more brilliant. I'm kidding This is enough....holy crap.

  • yes!!

  • most of these comments will agree with you, but most of them are just hypocrites who made fun of Michael Jackson when he was alive. I remember when everybody was against Michael and thats what tore him down. so fuck all you hypocrites and much props to illdoctrine for speaking the real.

  • effu2 go troll somewhere u fuckin loser. kill yourself.

  • U should have spoke @ the memorial instead of Freemason Sharpton

  • MAN u seriously have a gift for seeing both with your heart and mind and communicating that to others in a way that makes people pay attention. As for MJ...rest in peace.....you earned your time in heaven.

  • well-spoken

  • You said it all.

  • turning the camera away from yourself at the end. genius.

  • as usual, cogent, thoughtful, and on point.

  • Damn, J, always dropping the great insight. Thanks for that. I'm glad someone drew something deep from what I had perceived as a superficial media circus that cared more about his autopsy than his legacy.

  • So so true. Everyone DOES deserve that kind of love. This would be an amazing movie script for his eventual autobio. I can edit. Anyone got a camera and an MJ impersonator?

  • Thank you

  • just an expression...WOW!

  • I've commented on your previous videos a few times, and as I began to write another comment praising your insight I found myself drawing a blank. Words can not express the gratitude I have for your posts. You give a voice to the urban community, comprised of many young folks (myself included) who might not have the ability to express their positions in an articulate manner, such as yourself.

Is there a book in the works? Maybe a collection of essays? If not, I'd consider that criminal.

    @abes

  • Deep and insightful! Your sentiment reminds me of a forum with Sam Donaldson, in which when asked why the 24-hour media circus exists and why it disregards the privacy of celebrities (ranging from the great ones in a moment of shame to the faux-celebrities who don't deserve attention period), he replied that it exists because we the people make it profitable. Ever since the OJ trial, we have forced the media to become this obnoxious, beast, and it will only go away when we stop looking.

  • thank you for saying this. its everything that i was thinking and more.

  • Very nice!!! You said it perfectly man!

  • Wordy, yet insightful as usual. You mind thinks deep and I appreciate it. Good job.

  • I 'm a 57 year old white female who loved everything about MJ. I can't stop thinking about his tragic life. I can relate to a point! These comments say all that can be possibly said. Let's hope we all learn something from MJ's life!!!!

  • DOPENESS!

  • Incredible! Well done!

  • Well said, man. Well said.

  • J Smooth is the shit !!!

  • After 3 viewings of this I've gotta say that you are the most relevant and insightful person on Youtube right now. Sometimes there's a big gap between posts but when you do show up you show up big.

    Thanks again.

  • This was so ill that it made me sick. In a good way. Thanks for sharing bruh.

  • Jay your words are always on point, and GameOnaNation (.com) supports your efforts.

  • Spot on. Finally some wise and well thought words about this media frenzy. Thanks for sharing bro.

  • All i can say is that i havent heard anyone come close 2 the EXACT detail of this whole ordeal as u did...A friend forwarded this vid 2 me & i was floored! Thank you 4 not biting ur tongue & really speaking on what most attempt 2 sweep under the rug...

  • Thanks for that shoutout to Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo. As always, wonderful insight.

  • Great video, Jay! This was very heartfelt and insightful.

  • brilliantly said, Jay. xo

  • I enjoyed your poignant reflections on mj.

  • This was really something.. Thanks for the this.

  • seriously brilliant. I got chills. I had to come watch it again.

  • Chuuuch

  • Dude that is so deep and so right on.

I am so glad I found you.

I am a songwriter and a singer and I had to process Michael's passing by giving him the greatest gift I could personally bestow, to say thank you, but not to say goodbye, because I believe he will live forever in our world in our hearts and in our music for all time.

I wrote him a tribute song.

    "Mr. Jackson"

We will never forget him, I can never forget him.

    Michael Jackson 4ever!

    -Pete Hopkins

  • we love you Jay!

  • wow. illdoc that was pure. i agree with another comment that this is probably your best vid ever. on point, honest and illuminating. properz.

  • Great optimism and even better truth. Well done.

  • nice work Jay.

  • WOW! that was incredible. Brought me to tears.

  • illdoc is the shit right there. :)

  • Good talk.

That lady was nice with it.

  • I love you, brother. Thanks for this post

  • eveerybody should hear his words and reconsider their train of thought. i think alot like smooth but the way he put it into words, is a relief knowing somebody still got sense..and shows it
