I applauded harder than I ever have before after his comparison of anorexics and the morbidly obese to the Catholic church. I'm not sure he's the most brilliant man alive but he's damn close.
all xtians r kinda hkd up, but in my experience there's something about the catholics as opposed to the protestant religions, that is just Evil...
i'm not sure why...
it's like young kids and teenagers are possessed by this cold evil spirit of a twisted middle aged cruel racist old man, the kind tthat i thought went out of fashion in the 70's...
Fuck. I just witnessed a murder. How could anyone disagree with such a beautifully eloquent, earnest man. If I wasn't an atheist I would say that Stephen Fry is God!!
I... wow. I have to say, I was actually clapping in places - in front of my computer screen! At a speech that was made 2 years ago! By a man who is never going to hear a singe sound I ever make! And still I was clapping along with all those people in that hall.
@Mattkzenmusic Atheism and hedonism are not entities within themselves, and something which does not exist can't be held accountable for the actions of it's 'members'. The Roman Catholic Church is an organisation, and hence must take full responsibility for it's actions and their consequences.
@haircutalex No, each individual is responsible for their actions. Wrong is wrong, whether atheist or catholic. Doesn't really matter. Atheist regimes, such as Stalin's, Hitler's, and Mao's, are responsible for genocides as well, it doesn't really fall on churches alone. But you are right! I just wanted to point that out. I think Stephen does a wonderful job here, and I wish more people understood that virtue of Atheism, except where it falls to hedonism, which destroys the self.
@ayesoundmate I really don't think that he was devout, there buddy. Also a massive occultist, but his WAS a secular regime. Not really based around Catholicism. But, I didn't read mein kampf cause I could give two shits less about a serial farting psychopathic madman and his philosophy. Not interested.
maybe not devout by your definition, but he was definately devout by his own standards. and funny, you might not give a shit about a serial fdarting psychopathic madman and his philosophy-i do. We forget crimes like these at our peril, and without understanding history it will repeat itself. and also it was not a secular regime, the oath of allegiance to hitler was sworn to almighty god, and on each SS and German army belt were the words "Gott Mit Uns", or "God with us."
@Mattkzenmusic and also, are you seriously saying that the massacres in say, rwanda, sierra leone, or nigeria in the latter half of the 20th century alone (leaving out the second war, i've already mentioned that hitler was a catholic, made a deal with the catholic party in order to gain a majority for the nazi party in exchange for more influence for the church, and believed he was acting in god's plan) are actually surpassed by some athiest massacres? really?
@Mattkzenmusic The thing is, none of the massacres were done because of Atheism. Hitler's massacres were based on warped race thinking and he actually thought he was doing the Catholic lord's work. Stalin was power-mad and saw the church as a threat to his power, not so much belief in itself. Stalin also spent a lot of his life in highly religious environments that taught him inteolerance. Mao arguably is the one who did it most for Atheism but even then it is shaky. He was more like Stalin.
@ragerancher Most "athiest" nations were not athiest. In most examples, you have to know that they were dealing with the Catholics, who demand great sums of money from their people. The Church was attacked as a political enemy, and children were taught to be atheist, to keep their money from supporting the church, and their minds supporting the State. "God" was the dictator, "religion" was military service, and the State is truly a cult of personality. The doctrine of "atheism" is a charade.
@7j8i9m You may have misread what I was arguing. I was saying that the actions in these nations were not based on Atheism but on generally being power hungry and seeing the church as a potential rival for control over the people. Hence religious persecution was about a dictator securing their own power base, not because they had some Atheist agenda. I've also argued elsewhere that these regimes basically become religions in themselves (viewing the dictator as a god, literally in the case of NK)

Atheism and hedonism killed more people in the 20th Century than any religion.
