Final Cut Express 4: Review

Thanks for this, I feel more confident now about transitioning from imovie to fce. I presently use only my ipod and a fuji stills camera. I want to upgrade to a video camera but get confused about all the features. Can you recommend a cheap camcorder with an ok zoom, enough space etc. Cheers, Carol

Do you know the difference between express and final cut pro specifically? Im looking to get a macbook and express in the next week or so. I need more than Movie Maker or iMovie etc. My school uses final cut pro but i dont start for 3 weeks so i havent used it yet. And its like 900$ lol so i wont have it anytime soon. @Holthane Final Cut Express has the professional features cut out of it, but if your going to buy Express just wait on pick up Final Cut Pro X off of the Mac App store, it's $299 and worth it, it's the direction Apple is taking with their video editing suite. This video is a few years old and things have changed since then. I hope this helps.

Was about to return Final Cut Express 4 after checking out tutorials on Lynda.com. Seemed super complicated as compared to iMovie. But after watching your youtube video I'm going to keep it. You brought up some really good examples of why migrating to FCE4 would be better than sticking to iMovie 'templates'. Thanks for helping me make the right choice.

@popitn2nd Thanks, I use this with a Macbook Pro from 2007 it's a 2.2 ghz core 2 duo, your 13 inch Macbook Pro will handle Final Cut Express perfectly! You should have no problems

it's said that FCE 4.0 doesn't come with soundtrack? what if i always put soundtrack in my imovie editing and export it to FCE, does it matter? thanks, i'm deciding whether to get 3.5 or 4.0. Another concern is that i'm using snow leopard, don't know if 3.5 is acceptable for that system version?

Once you buy the physical copy of final cut express, can you download it on more than one computer?

@Lewis3947 Yes, you can install it on multiple machines. I'm not sure if you can run multiple instances of it on the same home network, because with Logic Pro you can only have one instances running at a time on a network. Hope this help! Thanks for viewing!

@MrMagic201 I would go with Final Cut Pro, not sure iMovie could handle this. I'm pretty sure you can edit 4 videos onto 1 screen.

@AKATECHSUPPORT - There are a lot of differences between them. I use both of them, and FCE is a very decent option, but one of the things it lacks and is troublesome is the limited number of formats that it handles in comparison to its bigger brother. DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO50, SD and HD card camcorder footage, as well as any other shot at 24fps will require FCP instead of FCE.

when u buy the program and it says register do not register it!!!!!! if you dont register it you may share it with other computors so if you have 2 macs (or a freind) then u can share the program. so do not ever register it whenever it says register click register later

To sharpdressedkid, If you are near an Apple Store, i would take it in there along with you Mac and show them. They will help, even if you don't have Apple Care Protection.

How come you never do your videos with Final Cut Express 4? Do you just settle for Imovie all the time? If you are using it, You are not utilizing much of it. All your videos are just you sitting and talking to the camera, you know?

Not sure, I guess it is just easier to do them with imovie. I just felt that I really do not need to use FCE anymore! What would you like me to do with FCE? Please feel free to suggestion something!

Sorry to hear that about FCE. I love that program! I try and do most of my videos in FCE. Occasionally, I will finnish my scenes and import them to Imovie 08 for a little speaking time. I'm not ready to invest in IM09 yet. In FCE, I love using moving video on video, cloning, spinning, better cropping, sizing the window, and panning around the picture, even if it was captured by a still camera.

I admit FCE wasn't as easy to pick up as the ILife apps, but I managed.

I am pretty sure you can do green screen stuff with Final Cut Express, I am not sure with Sony Vegas since I have never used it before, but I know you can do green screen with Final Cut Express!

Any great examples of Final Cut Express? Is it too hard to use? I mean I am good with Photoshop and I caught on with that. I just don't get enough out of iMovie. There is like, not enough effects, transitions, I want something that looks good. And can you do Picture in Picture?

It is not difficult to use, but it is more complex than imovie. You can do three point editing and the tools are straight forward. It's a powerful editing tool for the price.

Yes, the new final cut express does not have soundtrack, but I think they did this because of Garageband. You can do everything similar with soundtrack in Garageband. I hope that helps

Todd, this review was awesome man! I use Final Cut Express and Imovie08 a lot and love them both. Through trial and error, I found that Imovie is the best tool to get the video to You Tube, even if I did the whole thing through Final Cut Express.
