Justine Waddell provides a fiery 'Tess', which I gather Nicholls wanted for the revamped 2008 version. She realistically portrays a 'Tess' who is a independent but believably fallible. 2008 high pitched 'innocent' Tess seems too tough, modern and knowing and the 'taken advantage of' scene turned into rape doesn't fit.
If it ain't broke.....
But I DID like 2008 Angel and here too. DIdn't quite get Peter Firth option.
The young lasses those days were quite dumb...or should I say silly...and easily taken advantage of. She actually bought into the family story of being from the genteel by name and so thought she could make her fortune that way...look how she quickly trusted that bounder over the other gals who were more her class. The real drama now begins after that "jaunt" in the oldest part of the forest! Love the movie so far and it quite approximates the book!
Gosh you can almost see the slime rolling down him, how could go with him, I'd rather get in the fight with the tart women. Blugggggh he gives me the heebie geebies.
15 seconds in is absolutely spot on to the way Hardy wrote it in the book.
He wrote, "She went up the path to the outhouse wence the music notes came. It was a windowless erection used for the storage of peat, and from the open door there floated into the night a mist of yellow radiance, which she thought was illuminated smoke, but it was the glimmer of candles"
Film makers got that accurate and done a supurb job in this version, which is the only version to get that right, best version ever.
Even so, I think that the 2008 short tv show wasn't so much as similar to the book as it was a re-done version of this movie. I think that this version is definately very good in regards to being similar to the book, the other version was more for entertainment purposes :)
Maybe it's just me, but I defaintely like the latest one better. Angel was hotter.
He also shouldnt have said anything about the horse and toys given to Tess's family, he would of been better favoured if she had found out later from her parents, let others sing your praises instead of himself.
It doesn't look like seduction to me. Think about it this way...Tess was in the transition period of asleep and awake. She isn't going to be aware immediately of what's going on (anyone who can just wake up and BE awake has my envy). She probably thought it was a dream, and this creepster was probably someone else in her mind. When she becomes aware of what's going on, she starts to struggle and say "stop."
she doesn't put up much of a fight in this one, but in the other version, its even worse. At least in this one she says stop, in the other one she didn't do anything, she just lied there
@18andreab In the book its really ambiguous. However, I'm pretty sure it was rape as in the boom Hardy writes, "Doubtless some of Tess d'Urberville's mailed ancestors rollicking home from a fray had dealt the same measure even more ruthlessly towards peasant girls of their time". That is, took advantage of young girls whilst drunk.
gosh, jason fleming, he doesn't look like himself in this production
