My roommate has cats, and I just purchased an expensive recliner, and they are already trying to claw it up. Get some softpaws people and stop mutilating your pets. Softpaws are plastic caps that go over the nails so your cat can not scratch your furniture and they don't disfigure your animal. Either that or dont get a cat.

I'm doing an internship at a Veterninary Hospital right now and got to watch a declaw surgery earlier today. After the vet completed the surgery and left the room, the vet tech was talking to me about how controversial a surgery it was and how she personally didn't agree with it because "it's like buying a dog and then expecting it not to bark." Going through with this surgery basically means you care more about your furniture than your animal, and that's just plain sad.

he was put to sleep when he was declawed. i have a big bottle of pain meds to give him throughout the week. he has been chillen on the couch snuggling and purring. totally fine. way better cat than the first 5 months of having him where he scratched the shit out of me and everyone else who came over. i have scratches all over my couch, blinds, everywhere. after that surgery as a kitten he wont be able to make me bleed again. we'll be much happier

Debarking is another one. Working with the dog is too much hard work for some lazy, ignorant dog owners. Either work with the animal, or accept the conditions aren't right to own that animal. Don't force pain and long term adverse side effects on them for you or your neighbours convenience.

my cousin has a very seet cat named mocha. She has claws and she was born wild, instead of declawing cats (which takes of a part of their paws) you can just trim them or make them a little more dull, yes they will get sharp again but it wont hurt to take some responsibility and do some work rather than "abuse" them

This just goes to show you that most vets could give a shit about the animals. Most of them only care about the money. I would never do this to my cat and there is no need to. I use soft paws, they are small plastic caps that you put on your cats claws.

If you can't be bothered to put nail caps on your cats nails or even to trim their nails, you don't deserve to own a cat. Period.
My little Wheatley is a pain in the butt sometimes (especially when he tries to use his claws to climb up on my lap when I'm wearing shorts) but I would never declaw him. When I went in on his last checkup the vet asked me about it and my answer was an emphatic "NO".
I couldn't imagine trying to function without the tips of my fingers and toes :(
This is probably going to get immensly disliked, but here I go. At the time i adopted my cat, my parents said that she had to be declawed to live with us. At the time, I had no clue of the implications, but what I know now is that she was ONE WEEK from being put down. Choosing between cutting out a cat's claws or leaving them to die, I would take declawing every time.
The majority of people are so quick to judge. There are plenty of cases where it is absolutely necessary. Our previous cat had a problem of scratching with enjoyment, we gave it two years and our only other option was to give him away or set him free, which we didn't want (we loved him)
I think you're basing negatives on a very wide scale indeed. Most declawed cats won't experience what you've listed in the video. It's sorta like saying you might hallucinate if you take cough medicine.
@Scullnblades scratching with enjoyment? Was it a bad habit of the cat to scratch up your furniture? If so you need consistent training to keep him off. If he is hurting himself with scratching, there are actually alternatives to declawing to prevent scratching damage. You should research them first. But there are many medical reasons people are forced to declaw. It should not be a first option if you can find alternatives.
Ugh, this is horrible! I would never, ever de-claw my cat. If I ever have children and I'm afraid that my cat will scratch them, I'd just teach my kids to be nice to the cat instead of punishing the cat for protecting itself. This is so painful to watch. :(

@davidortiz7 You obviously know nothing about the surgery then. It IS like removing the ends of your fingers/toes, they don't just chop the claw off like you would trim your nails, they cut the lower bone off as well. Otherwise the claw would grow back (just as a nail would).

You say buy a scratching posts but obviously you have a well behaved cat. Not every animal is as good as you say and will not use a post and rather just scratch furniture. My dog did the same thing, didn't remove its teeth but there people who would rather fathom that option.

I'm doing an internship at a Veterninary Hospital right now and got to watch a declaw surgery earlier today. After the vet completed the surgery and left the room, the vet tech was talking to me about how controversial a surgery it was and how she personally didn't agree with it because "it's like buying a dog and then expecting it not to bark." Going through with this surgery basically means you care more about your furniture than your animal, and that's just plain sad.

just throwing this out there- i love my cat.
he was put to sleep when he was declawed. i have a big bottle of pain meds to give him throughout the week. he has been chillen on the couch snuggling and purring. totally fine. way better cat than the first 5 months of having him where he scratched the shit out of me and everyone else who came over. i have scratches all over my couch, blinds, everywhere. after that surgery as a kitten he wont be able to make me bleed again. we'll be much happier

Debarking is another one. Working with the dog is too much hard work for some lazy, ignorant dog owners. Either work with the animal, or accept the conditions aren't right to own that animal. Don't force pain and long term adverse side effects on them for you or your neighbours convenience.

This is just stupid... Its like removing their whiskers, or tail, or why not teeth? If you dont want your cat to scratch on your furniture, then get good scratching furniture and teach the cat to use them. And also do trim the cats claws with a nailclipper designed for cats/small dogs. And if your afraid of gettings scratched, well, dont get a cat then. This is just so incredible irrisponsible, im glad its illegal in Sweden.

my cousin has a very seet cat named mocha. She has claws and she was born wild, instead of declawing cats (which takes of a part of their paws) you can just trim them or make them a little more dull, yes they will get sharp again but it wont hurt to take some responsibility and do some work rather than "abuse" them

cat declawing causes the cat to have behavioural problems and in some instances, cats stop using there cat boxes. I have many friends with cats and SOME are declawd. The declawd cats cause alot more damage around the houses then the ones with claws. If you dont want a animal with claws, get a horse, donkey or another animal that dont have claws. This IS animal cruelty!!!!

This just goes to show you that most vets could give a shit about the animals. Most of them only care about the money. I would never do this to my cat and there is no need to. I use soft paws, they are small plastic caps that you put on your cats claws.

If you can't be bothered to put nail caps on your cats nails or even to trim their nails, you don't deserve to own a cat. Period.
My little Wheatley is a pain in the butt sometimes (especially when he tries to use his claws to climb up on my lap when I'm wearing shorts) but I would never declaw him. When I went in on his last checkup the vet asked me about it and my answer was an emphatic "NO".
I couldn't imagine trying to function without the tips of my fingers and toes :(

This is probably going to get immensly disliked, but here I go. At the time i adopted my cat, my parents said that she had to be declawed to live with us. At the time, I had no clue of the implications, but what I know now is that she was ONE WEEK from being put down. Choosing between cutting out a cat's claws or leaving them to die, I would take declawing every time.

The majority of people are so quick to judge. There are plenty of cases where it is absolutely necessary. Our previous cat had a problem of scratching with enjoyment, we gave it two years and our only other option was to give him away or set him free, which we didn't want (we loved him)
I think you're basing negatives on a very wide scale indeed. Most declawed cats won't experience what you've listed in the video. It's sorta like saying you might hallucinate if you take cough medicine.

@Scullnblades scratching with enjoyment? Was it a bad habit of the cat to scratch up your furniture? If so you need consistent training to keep him off. If he is hurting himself with scratching, there are actually alternatives to declawing to prevent scratching damage. You should research them first. But there are many medical reasons people are forced to declaw. It should not be a first option if you can find alternatives.

It's because they don't want to show that this surgery is even painful with general anesthetic and additional local anesthetic in each paw.
Does the vet state that cats tend to
- tend to mark with urine instead of using their scent marks on their paws due to the pain in the paws post surgery?
- avoid litter box due to the painful experience post surgery?
- become biters since they have lost their claws to defend themselves?

@davidortiz7 You obviously know nothing about the surgery then. It IS like removing the ends of your fingers/toes, they don't just chop the claw off like you would trim your nails, they cut the lower bone off as well. Otherwise the claw would grow back (just as a nail would).
Tell me that isn't cruel to an animal that by it's very design and nature needs it's claws to run, climb, goto the toilet and defend itself...
