Price Gouging? The federal government gets billions of dollars for leasing the land that oil companies drill on, then they tax the gasoline at the pump. Oil company profits are taxed again. If they distribute the profits to share holders...they tax again. At the end of the day, the oil company makes back 8 cents for every dollar invested.
If the government were to impose an artificially low price, supply would decrease and a gas shortage would ensue.

However, a company cannot force you to buy their product. It would be a pain in the ass, but you could ride a bike, walk, take public transportation, car pool, etc.

Price Gouging? The federal government gets billions of dollars for leasing the land that oil companies drill on, then they tax the gasoline at the pump. Oil company profits are taxed again. If they distribute the profits to share holders...they tax again. At the end of the day, the oil company makes back 8 cents for every dollar invested.
If the government were to impose an artificially low price, supply would decrease and a gas shortage would ensue.
So please define "price gouging".

The Democrats screaming "tax windfall profits" are economic incompetents. Such measures will not lower the price of oil in USD.
Waters is smarter.
The only way such taxes would benefit the economy is if all such taxes were immediately rebated to the consumers, individual and corporate.
The average Neo-Fascist Democrats, just like the Theo-Fascist Republicans, will, left to their own devices, make what is already economic disaster into a catastrophe.
Nationalizing oil is just one step.

It will take about two years to nationalize oil properly and put it under a national but politically independent "Energy" authority or some such thing.
Most of the personnel up to but not including the top corporate elite will stay, and many of them will approve the change.
Most stockholders will be satisfied with the compensation.
It will take longer to open up Alaska and off shore drilling for public benefit.

Think about if the "big bad" oil industries could use their overhead to improve their refineries/build new refineries/drill in different locations. They'd use a lot of that overhead reducing your prices by inceasing their supply. But hey....why let capitalism run its course when you can spread socialistic nonsensical ideas and hug trees all day for Mother Earth. Congress ran on the ticket of getting us out of Iraq/improving oil prices in '06 and so far they've whined/done nothing. More Kool Aid!

I mean since you have nothing better to do with your WHOLE day. I suggest you start over with a real classic, how about Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham?
