@TheDuckseason When you plant them you let them grow up about 6" then bury them again and repeat over and over until the box is full. Then just wait it out. What will happen is the greenery will die off and go brown and crusty. That is when you should harvest. Empty the entire box. This method gives you a higher yield as it encourages more potatoes to grow. -Randy
Very cool videos! I also have raised beds as well, I built them last winter. Tried some potatoes as a trial this past fall. I didn't put them in a box like that, but that sure is a great idea! its fun to build stuff like that! I don't like tomato cages, so I'm trying something different this year for those. Loved the funky music too.. sounds almost like the Doors!
I couldn't wait, i just started sprouting my broccoli and cabbage for this spring.. lol Happy New Year!
@pcslider Hey man! Thanks for watching! We are eagerly waiting for the potatoes to mature. We are already getting produce from the rest of our garden. Feel free to subscribe and see our progress as we "grow". ;)
@HomesteadAcres Yes, we just got the box done and actually just getting the square foot raised beds made, this is a change from our row garden from last year. We decided this year that we would make a change and share our experience with the world and start posting this all to YouTube to help others. :)
@HomesteadAcres We will be adding a blog and forum page for those who want to join in. Will be able to post and embed videos direct into the forum as well. A great avenue to co-ordinate and share information... much faster and more streamlined way to communicate rather than using YT for that. The videos are an awesome way to show people, but as most would know, a threaded conversation via a forum is just easier. :) Keep up to date... that is to come soon.
@austinsimpleliving Yes, planting vertically is great. Just remember to cover the green when you get 6" of green above the soil. ;) Keep covering until your box is full.
@pinetar100 No actually. We read through research that the potatoes at the bottom will be ready first so we decided to construct it so we could access each section individually. Each section is 6" so it just made sense to us to do it this way. Guess we'll see. Either way they are super handy.
I can see your point, I also heard of a guy in BC doing it this way because of the rocky mountian soil only giving him limited soil depth. I look forward to seeing how it works for you.
@bcgarden2010 Yes, we did make the box ourselves. If you look back through our videos you will see one all about making the box and how you are supposed to plant the potatoes and take care of them. ;)
Every one seems to plant their potatoes so close to each other. I might try a few ways....if I have enough room. Oh and that music was Halloween spooky!
@jihadacadien Since they are seed potatoes you don't harvest those. Potatoes are tubers and they spread outward from the center point... when you have a tight space you plant them close together and all the "free" space will "in theory" get filled with potatoes.
@SSanf Well... this is our first try at it... but I estimate around 50lbs of potatoes if we do it right. You start with 6" of soil, when the sprouts poke out of the soil about 4-5 inches you bury them and keep repeating this process till the bin is full. Should have a lot... we hope. It is our first try at it. The box method with organic seed potatoes should yield very high numbers. :)
Curious, Why did you not fill the box higher with soil? Trying to learn this but i dont understand why so deep in the box?

I like how you designed the potato box. The hinged doors would make for easy harvesting.
Is this your first season using it?

Wish we would have seen this earlier. We could have saved a lot of "real estate" in our backyard garden. Great space saving idea!

I like your box. I think next year I will make one of those, and free up my other boxes.
I planted way too many, I was just excited about getting out in the dirt.

@GettingThereGreen Oh I know you don't harvest the one you plant ;) And I'm stubborn like that when it comes to trying stuff for myself.

Cool this is the third year I have heard about doing potatoes this was, I may just have to try. I like your box thats awsome!
Revolutionisnow1 1 year ago
@Revolutionisnow1 We are only doing it this way because we are in an urban area and want to produce maximum yields. ;)

Nice! Have you done this before? How many pounds of potatoes do you expect to get?
