Wow, you are brave! :D Here is a thought, if you have a blog sale of your unused make up, it would be fair to use that money to buy things you really want to try this year and not count it towards your "12 purchases for the year". Totally fair. Coz that would be honest to God, RECYCLING! :) Good luck!
Crap I should have watched this earlier, would have been good for me to embark on this. Maybe I'll try to only buy one thing from Feb onwards since Jan is a write-off. I'll have to seriously think about it...makes me nervous jajajaja
Good idea! I've always known that I have waaaaay too much. My prob is out of sight, out of mind but I like a neat counter. Now I'm reversing that - I have one cleanser, toner, eyeshadow palette, lipstick (one each of pink, red and neutral), blush…and left them on the counter. Started in December and have thrown 4 containers already. The only thing I didn't finish but threw anyway was an Estee Lauder palette that didn't work with my skintone but kept because it was expensive.
If u are replacing an item u already own but ran out of u shouldn't count it towards ur 12 items. But if its something new or s collection then that's diff. Example if u use Mac pro longwear and run out and makeup forever comes out with a new type of foundation that u didn't own before that should go towards ur 12 items :)
this is something i decided to do also because the amount of make up i have is getting out of control. i want to start using up and enjoying what i have before it goes off and i have to bin it. so i am allowing myself 2 make up items a month and then if i dont see anything unique to my collection i wont buy anything that month which is even better. i used to buy every peach mac blusher that came out but apart from the really unique ones like marine life to be honest they all looked the same.x
I only now got a chance to watch this video (just finished a ridiculous amount of uni work :) and at first I thought "no way" but then I thought "cool"! And guess what, I am going to do it with you! I already have a couple of makeup items in mind which I want to have but other than that, this is a great idea and will stop me from purchasing silly products I'm not really going to use! Best of luck to you ;) - Nora
haha, yes i agree, if actually finish up the product, like foundation, and purchase a new one, it doesnt count. i think what we need to limit is stock pile the same category items, like lipstick, eyeshadow.
i don't think i could do it! good luck, i also don't think that staple items that you run out of should not count...so no buying 4 different foundations to try out at once ;) i'm just trying to only buy what i really need (staple items) and limited edition items that i really, really want this year. i think that's going to ba hard enough!
oh good lord, good luck, I do that in a day:)) ! I really enjoy ur videos and look forward to going thru all the past ones! Regards, hugs from NY, Jan
I agree, you have to buy the necessities if you run out. My husband gave me a $50 limit for this whole year for nail polish because I already have over 200. This is going to be soooo hard! I am going to have to choose wisely and only plan on buying limited edition or ones that I must have. I don't count top or base coats because those are necessities....is that wrong? lol
Awesome idea emilie... I have decided to do it with you. I will include foundation & other essentials in my twelve. I am sure I have enough make up to last me the entire year with out ANY purchases at all. But one make up purchase a month can be a nice extra.
Good Luck! I think this is a wonderful project. A new mascara ( foundation etc..) should not count towards the 12 as long as it is a replacement for your finished products.
I find it super honest of you to bring up consumer debt because I think it's something a lot of makeup gurus avoid talking about altogether when really, how realistic is it to be doing a haul per month!? I love the idea and the best of luck! The hardest part with going consumer-debt free is keeping the motivation, so don't get bummed out if it plateau's/other bumps get in your way! YOU CAN DO IT! :)
Excellent idea. One of my two New Year's resolutions was to save, save, save and this will help out a lot so I think I may come along for the ride, besides my stash could do with being shopped and I'm well stocked up on the basics - foundation, concealer, etc - so I can include the purchase of those items in my 12. It will be interesting to see how many of the 12 items make it into the 'Best of 2012' video!
I agree, necessities shouldn't be included in your 12 for 2012 resolution. Nice idea by the way... I'm not YET ready to do that but sounds very good. I'll have to think about it ;-)
If you buy a foundation because you've finished a foundation then no but if you buy a new foundation to try out when you haven't finished the existing then yes it counts towards the 12
Youre right ....buying your regular foundation is not an extra buy....buying a diff eyeshadow cause you like the color and you have eyeshadows would be a "extra" purchase.
I agree that replenishing should not be counted because that is not what gets us in trouble. What is bad is when we keep buying things that we already have plenty of.
hehe...i think what you mean by 12 purchases for 2012 is not necessarily items you need (ie if you run out of foundation or concealer cuz those are staple products).i take this challenge as buying one extra make up item that would be an addition to your collection,ie the chanel blush. You dont need the blush as im sure you have others that are fabulous, but it warrants a need to buy.does this make sense? well it does to me.good luck! i know i have no will power for this at this point and time. xo
This sounds crazy! Good luck though I am sure you will be very proud of yourself by the end of the year. I don't think that not counting the essentials is cheating :D
This is a great idea! I'm with you Emily! In January so far all I've bought is Teenage Dream nail polish and Fly by OPI and, the devine Guerlain highlighter. I love this idea and I think my husband will love it as well. LOL The reason I started watching You Tube is because I had to start my makeup collection from scratch and I didn't want to waste my money. I only wanted to buy the best of the best. This project will keep me on the right track. I love it.
I would be so down for this with you if I had more self control! I am actually doing a "no buy" for nail polish though, and limiting myself to only 5 for this whole year. I've become a bit better at not buying makeup recently so thats why I didn't include a limit for myself =P
And I agree with you on "essentials" not counting towards the total. I remember being on project 10 pan and being so excited to be able to buy new mascara and not have it count haha
Awwww am I the only one who is sad to see your hauls? I understand your point and why you are doing it, but you really find great stuff and I love to see the items you purchase. Definitely items you need, staples, should not count. Make up is literally my crack, i would have such withdrawl, it would not be pretty. lol.
This sounds like a great idea. I think I might also try doing this. I'm pretty sure I can do it, I'm on a no buy p10pan so for now I'm good but when that ends it could be tough. Love this idea!
Totally agree, necessities should not count. I think it's a great idea, + it might help you rediscover items you have in your current collection. Best of luck to you!
hahah! i made this same exact resolution, then I quickly increased it to 2 makeup items a month and 1 nail polish. I am already done for Jan!!!!!! :) good luck!!
This is a great idea Emilie! I definitely want to join you! I have way too much products, I want to do 12 products all together (inc. nail polishes) for 2012, just because I don't normally buy too many polishes anyway, but I am really really wanting the orange chanel polish as well. And definitely makes sense not to count foundation etc.
If I was doing it I'd would count foundation and mascara type products if i bought them but didn't need them. Like if some foundation or mascara comes out and get all hyped up and I'm all like "I need that" but really I have a full bottle of whatever im using I would count it. I think I actually will do the 12 for 2012.
I'm going to do it too but I'm going to include makeup... Cause I have 3 1/2 done foundations right now and mascara lasts 6 months so it should be ok.... Hahaha I will try anyways! : /
Sweet Jesus I don't think I could do this.... But, I may actually try it.....?? Essentials shouldn't be included.... that's just crazy talk lol. Great idea though, I'm trying to cut down on my spending as well, so I guess it's worth a shot! :-) Good Luck! Be strong!!!!
Fantastic idea! I am totally doing it too! Eeekkk I was going to give myself an allowance of $25 dollars a month, but I think this is better. I might be tempted to buy a lot of cheap makeup. I say staples should not be included as long as you don't have any backups.
Thanks for the idea! This will definitely help me with my new years resolution to save my money instead of spending! I agree with you that the 12 items you purchase shouldn't be necessities..they should be fun or new products!
Wow, I give you a lot of credit! Question.....if you purchase one, entire collection, does that qualify as 1? LOL, I can't even admit yet that I have a problem. Good Luck!
It's really commendable of you to do this. So many people spend beyond their means. I'm happy and proud to see you have a goal to be free of debt. Wish more people would think like that.:)
Im joining! And im only buying necessities if I run out of every one I have. ( i think I have enough of almost everything) but this is going to really make me thinknif the product is really worth it!
I wish you the best of luck in this Emilie! I agree about foundation, etc. these products need replenishment most often and could not last an entire 12 months through season changes, etc. can't wait to see how this goes. Stacie xo
I don't think this is a good idea it's TO restrictive. Not Fun. PS I certainly don't think anyone should ever go into debt for makeup. If you do this I would say staple products should not count. You Need certain things.
:-O that is a great idea! My original resolution was to not buy ANY unnecessary makeup (and things, in general) for at least the first half year but then I was thinking that will be too restricted and therefore, I'll probably "binge" over products after the first half year is over, so this is the perfect solution! Thnks for sharing it!! Xx
I like this idea!! I already bought quite a few make up items while i was on holiday during the beginning of this month though! But im not going to include those in the quota! My challenge will be starting from now! haha! Thanks for the idea! xxx
I agree I don't think that you have to count the necessary items, because it's like your abstaining from luxury items that you may not use often. Not to say you should go out to buy 3 new mascaras (for example) just to try them when yours runs out...if that makes since.
Great Resolution I wish I had your will power!...but I don't so I'm gonna stick my diet & workout resolution :)
hmmm I think I may do this too....I agree basics shouldn't count towards your 12. I've only purchased the naked 2 palette this year so fingerscrossed I can keep to just 12 haha xx
Sounds good and I agree w you and the other comments, skincare, foundation, mascara and even eyeliner (if it's something you use everyday and run out) should not be part of the 12. It is 12 makeup items AND 12 nail polishes though, right?
That sounds crazy difficult! and I agree that the stuff you use everyday shouldn;t be included in 12 purchases. especially skincare. anyway, Good Luck!! (I don't think I can join lol)
Good Luck!! I'm not sure I could do it! I agree with you on the necessities, foundation, mascara, concealer and eyeliner! Your skin looks fab by the way! x
Genial idee! I think it's a great idea and I agree, don't include repurchases of basics for e.g. foundations, mascara etc. You've inspired me....wondering if I can do it! Good luck!
I am going to try this. I said try cuz I'm not sure if I really can but I will try my best though. I think basics like foundation, mascara, black eyeliner and skin care should not be included in this just the nail polish and color cosmetics. Also I was just watching your collection video and now five minutes later I'm standing by my vanity cleaning up already so thank you for that too.
I think everyday products like mascara, skincare, foundation don't count in projects like this. They are staples that you need so I could see not putting the limitations on those things. I'd make it only toward new items.
Great idea! I am definitely going to do this too!

hmmm I think I may do this too....I agree basics shouldn't count towards your 12. I've only purchased the naked 2 palette this year so fingerscrossed I can keep to just 12 haha xx

i know you can stick to this plan :) and do not include necessities in the 12 products.

Great idea, Emile! I agree about not including the necessities in this project. Those are essentials, just like buying toothpaste. Have a great week!

Sounds good and I agree w you and the other comments, skincare, foundation, mascara and even eyeliner (if it's something you use everyday and run out) should not be part of the 12. It is 12 makeup items AND 12 nail polishes though, right?
BTW, I want the Chanel blush too!!

Good luck!

I'm going "try" to do this too, ha ha ha

I agree about the foundation (it's needed) but as long as you don't NEED 6 different types of foundation. =)

I agree that the day to day stuff shouldn't be included in those types of limitations - otherwise that's all you'd buy that year lol :)
i'm crossing my fingers with ya! XO

So, those things we need, should not count towards your twelve. Just completing my comment ;-)

Good luck Emilie! You can do it. Not sure if I can though. I bought 3 polishes yesterday :(

I agree! We all need shampoo's and conditioners, face and eye creams, foundation. Great plan! Best wishes!!!

I think everyday products like mascara, skincare, foundation don't count in projects like this. They are staples that you need so I could see not putting the limitations on those things. I'd make it only toward new items.

Okay... so you're already down to only 9 nail polishes for the rest of the year :D LOL
