IMO Robbie Merril is a bass legend and very underrated. Think about it. He wanted to play bass and is right handed but couldn't because of a birth defect that makes it so he cant move the middle finder on his left hand, so he learned how to play left handed! Although he may not show of how good he is in Godsmack, he is amazing bassist and to make it even more amazing, he can play this good with an unmovable finger and left handed when his right is dominant!
@AirblasterShred66 God, this whole idea that bass shouldn't be played with a pick comes from the insecurity some very amateur bassists feel because other people think they're just bad guitarists. It's bullshit. Finger style and picking produce different sounds that suit different styles, just as with guitar.
A good player should be able to play both ways and the method they use when writing their own music is their choice.
I have a question for any guitar or bass player. When I was five years old I got one of my fingernails ripped off, it was the ring finger, and when it grew back it grew a lot more secure. Whenever I play with that finger now it's very painful. Can anybody give me some advise on what to do?
@TheTylerGeissler do you play with your ring finger? or does it cause pain even if you dont use it? you could try to switch to picking, or just try to use ur 1st and middle finger
@HebiRyu If you've ever watched them live, he has this signature thing where he does the devil horns upside down with his thumb out and shakes his hand really fast. I guess that's what he's doing? haha
These BEHIND THE PLAYER dvds are pretty sick Ive bought like 4 of them of them so far --> Duff McKagen from GnR, Munky from KoRn, John5 from Manson (now Rob Zombie)They all rock!
I have the same one as Robbie, 35'' Euro 4LX-35 its freaking sick bro!, im really want the tabs for that one bass riff he did on the DVD where godsmack is unplugged, that would be kick ass to play!
i read your comment and see you have the spector euro 4lx-35 bass thats 35" scale. i was wondering has that bass been discontinued cuz i cant find one for sale anywhere or do you have to order them straight from the spector site. thanx
Absolutely - Spector + SWR is a mighty combination. 1/2 of my "Main Basses" are Spector 4-string, 5-string & 5-string fretless (the other two are Mike Lull Modern Jazz-style) running into an SWR preamp, and I get anything from the classic Spector Growl (see also: Alice In Chains, Queensryche, etc.) to a smooth tone that I've used for acoustic-based projects. Killer gear all around.
Also, "My boy Shaaanon Laaarkin"? Couldn't be more of a Boston guy if someone paid him. :D

It's kinda funny how they couldn't come up with a good name so they stole the title of a Alice in chains song xD.

So far off all the behind the player videos, that spector gives off the best tone, imo.
