N00bish question: What does "kara grab" mean? I mean, is it something different than a regular grab? Is it done in a different way, or just in particular situations? :)
Some normals move you forward or backward in a certain direction. In games where you can initiate grabs manually, you can normally interrupt normals with grabs. This means that you can take a normal that moves you forward and interrupt the normal with a throw BEFORE the normal actually comes out. This gives you the ability to mini-dash before a grab and thus increases its range; this is the "kara grab".
i would ASSUME that if you use a kara to get closer to somebody offensively, you can use them defensively by moving backwards. if somebody tries to grab, you just get out of their range and attack them, like go backwards+lp.flash chop to get them
some of the moves takes the characters backwards such as makoto's standing roundhouse (she slightly moves back a little bit to gain momentum for their attack) and if that move is cancelled into a grab, that moment when she moves backward gets cancelled into a grab....same with Urien's standing roundhouse,Gill's roundhouse, Alex's roundhouse, maybe 12's roundhouse, or Oro's standing fierce
it's not a negative MK. i use a ps2 controller so it's easier to do, but basically i roll my thumb onto the lk and then keep the ball on the lk and press the lp, somehow, it kara's that way
Start and MK, you can only do it on the console versions though. Also, I think you might have to beat the game with Alex just to use his start+ colors

if you do a normal move and do a throw after it very fast, the normal won't come out and you will do a throw instead.
BUT if your normal had some property that moves you forward, you will still move forward, so this way you can extend the range of your throw
