This movie is fascinating to me. It starts with this completely harmless (although, morbid) individual who seems destined to a life of blue-collar mediocrity, but he devolves into this strange and pathetic witness for historical revision who seems so completely unaware of what harm his actions are really causing. I don't believe he should be pitied at all, and one must remember that Morris may have interpreted his depiction on screen to be much more harmless than he actually is.

Money is my first guess. Maybe he sought his 15 minutes in fame as well. Would be far from the the first time that happened. He basicly destroyed his life with commissioned work for $10.000. What I dont is his enormous naivity thinking he could get off with presenting himself in a court as a expert witness solely based on fabricated credentials and blatant fraud.

@densaner77 although I do not believe in holocaust denial there is an issue with those testimonies. Some "facts" were not correct and some things did not make sense. it is likely and in some cases confirmed that the accused made deals with the prosecutors reduce their sentences.

Holocaust denial is ludicrous: it ignores the fact that British Intelligence was decoding the German Enigma messages. The British decoded these messages from Hitler's office to the field. Hence they had info. about the Holocaust during the War, although they lost the ability thru much of 1942 as the Nazis changed their Enigma settings. The British did intercept a message about the "Hoefle telegram" and the progress of the Holocaust, but the message was not understood and filed away.

i have just watched this film and i have got to say that whatever the intentions of the film-maker mr leuchter comes off much better than his detactors and persecutors and david irving's observations are spot on.

This film paid way too much credit to Leuchter. Leuchter has no real credentials as an electrical engineer nor in the death industry. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the mid 1960s. That's it. A large amount of his so called expertise were revealed as phony when he stood as an expert witness at the Ernst Zundel trial. He's never been contracted to manufacture execution equipment by any US state nor is he in any way an expert on such things. He's a pathetic holocaust denier, nothing more.

He did rebuild Tennessee's electric chair, he built lethal injection consoles for Missouri, Illinois, Delaware and New Jersey. However, you're right about his background -- not an engineer and not an expert on gas chambers.

From the Internet Movie Database "trivia" section about the "Mr. Death..." movie: The electric chair rebuilt by Fred Leuchter for the state of Tennessee has never been used. Additionally, all of the states which bought one of Leuchter's lethal injection machines have subsequently stopped using them because they were too difficult to operate and maintain.

I added that trivia contribution to IMDB some time ago. One element of that has changed -- Tennessee's chair was indeed used in September, 2007 on Daryl Holton. The chair indeed worked, however it had been reworked by a more low-key professional electrical engineer (who made it operate like Virginia's chair). The other engineer said that Leuchter's design was bound to malfunction/short circuit due to its wiring scheme.
