Thanks for this post, I danced on it... years ago in a Ben Berghman jazz choreo, first time I heared it, it really grabbed me... Chaka, the music, that wonderfull band... I had no trouble following that great Dizzy & Bird's rythm, performed by these wonderfull artists!! Thanks for posting and make me remeber, love it !!!
Notice the precision of the Brecker Brothers' solos: Michael's tenor sax solo begins around 2:00 and Randy's trumpet solo begin around 5:00 - and they're both about 2 minutes long.
Quintessential funk! Everybody's killin' it in THIS band!
just got the line-up for this INCREDIBLE band: michael brecker - ts; randy brecker - tp; steve ferrone - dr; henry gibson - perc; anthony jackson - b; hamish stuart - g; david williams - g; lee maiden - bkgr vocals; mark stevens - bkgr vocals.
but no way to find out the names of the 2 synth-players, anybody?? need to know who is that moog-player!!!
as far as im concerned, chaka looks fine- bra or no bra. this is a definite cut with the synth part at 5:00- oh my goodness. i still wanna marry chaka. thanks for posting.
C'MON, NOW! SHE DOESN'T NEED A BRA AT ALL. LET THE CHILE BE FREE OF THAT CONTRAPTION WHEN SHE'S TRYIN TO SING, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! I'M JUST SAYIN' (SMILEZ)!
@MoveOnDotOrgg I don't think she's wearing one at all! And that's SEXY! That's Chaka, she's a sexy woman, even now that's she's gained quite a few pounds...
I was waitin for Randy to play some trumpet! Why was he clappin on ONE anyway LOL. MIKE WAS KILLIN IT and Like McCoy Tyner said he is a Giant on the Selmer mark VI. Hamish Stuart in the backround? AWB frontman and bass. he sang woth Chaka on her first solo effort. This a great example of how fresh bebop will always be and a nice re doing of a classic- FC
This is a favorite song I like. My parents loved listening to and playing all types of Jazz,so I would hear Jazz a lot at home, along with other types of music!
@extremist79 Awesome sound but check this out: 4:22. Is that sung correct? Tell me what You hear...thx
I see & hear her taking the cue too soon, catching herself, and dropping back out so the backup line can finish their part. She hits a couple notes then stops with a frowny face

this is a great live jam! the album version is pretty great to (for those of you that remember vinyl) I got this when it first came out, still blows me away...No One Like Ms. Chaka Khan!
I'm usually a guy who frowns upon electric instruments being used in jazz fashion except for rhythm guitar. But this was the best version of this tune ever done and certainly the best on YouTube. I've been watching this clip for years and I still can't get enough of it. It just brings an irresistible smile to your face.
@Brian4hand I'm an acoustic instrument fan. I love straight-ahead jazz. When the cats start bringing the electric instruments into it, they tend to stray from the swingin' rhythm section that we all associate with classic jazz and then the fusion stuff becomes more prominent. I don't dig fusion.
@beeshor1 There is truth to that, but a lot of times it just wouldn't sound 'right' on some instruments playing the classic feel. I like Johnny Griffin and Casey Benjamin, so its possible to find a middle ground...I would say give fusion another chance
@beeshor1 likewise with me, i wouldnt say the best because of the duzzy orginial, it doesnt compare, not because its better, but just because its so different. night in tunisia is one of those songs that done by the right people, no matter how it sounds, its awsome :)
@feddo62 Well, you certainly have a good point. When I use words like "best", it implies that other versions are not as good. I definitely enjoy Dizzy's version and just about every version done by Art Blakey and the Messengers. So my choice of the word "best" wasn't really the best way to describe it. LOL. And you're right..... "Tunisia" is such a great song that when it's done right it sounds terrific no matter who is playing it. Great reply you gave.
@beeshor1 what an odd thing to say. That's what makes it jazz fusion. The cross influences of jazz with rock, funk and other styles. This means that other electric instruments in the arrangement are an absolute given. Without them you dont have REAL jazz fusion.
@bogusdogus I think you misread my comment. I meant that I'm usually against electric instruments being used in a jazz FASHION. I know it becomes what they call "fusion" when they incorporate all of the electrical instruments along with rock, funk and other elements. I don't like fusion. I'm a lover of straight-ahead jazz and acoustic instruments. But I can find pleasure in the occasional "fusion" type song. That is the case here.
Saw this tour..Chestnut Caberet in Philly ....I took a dozen roses to Chaka....one of the great musical experiences of my life! Hamish, and Ferrone from AWB, the Breckers, but Anthony Jackson on bass STOLE THE SHOW! One of the baaaddest muthers ever on bass!
