  • Why did you run it from your Laptop when u could have connected it to your Desktop pc and run it with much improved Fps?

  • @zackdrink2 Because the entire thing is self-contained. Meaning I can spin around as many times as I want and not get tangled up in wires.

  • @cybereality But could you do that Wireless in any way?

  • @zackdrink2 Yes, there are wireless options. They would require something like the ASUS WAVI and a custom built battery pack. Some guys on the MTBS3D forums have made similar setups that are wireless. It was just easier for me to use my laptop.

  • @cybereality Ok :)

  • @cybereality

Amazing Cyber! It really makes me want to buy a HMD!

    I have a question though:

I noticed you were aiming with your head and gun alike,

Are there any FPS that support separate sight and gun tracking, so you can look around with the HMD and independently aim with the wii remote?

If not, I think it would be reasonably easy to hack Quake to do so, considering all the hacks that game has had(and probably even stereo 3D). I'd have done it myself if I could :(

  • @omarcortes88 Vuzix has a mod for Unreal 2004, that lets you do independent gun and headtracking. You can also do this with ARMA 2 using the TrackIR. But of course, if you have the source code to a game you can implement this natively.

  • My hero! That is a positively AWESOME setup, Cyber.

Do you have any way to reset "zero" on the gun + HMD while in-use? I've always had trouble with gyro\inertial sensor setups and drift (though I imagine you're having a better time keeping your head stationary by making adjustments with the wiimote+)

Thanks for sharing- you're really pioneering something great there.

  • @JEPiel Thanks man! I did have a button that would let me re-center it. Basically what it did was disable the gun tracking (while I held it) and then I could move the gun back to a neutral position. But I actually did not have to use it as often as you would think (not at all for this video).

  • Suggestions: Use a better head mounted display (higher resolution), use an Aiming-Deadzone type of thing for aiming with the Wii Remote (it moves the crosshair, but not the camera), but if you move it to the very edge of the screen it moves the camera slightly.

  • I still think that Twin high-resolution 852 x 480 LCD displays are not enough.

    I much prefer my 2560x1600 30" wide gamut monitor :) Or my 1920x1080 55" 3d tv :)

  • @z1ph0n3 Its true. The resolution is pretty low. This setup was more of an experiment that anything. Normally when I play games its on a 1080P 3D monitor.

  • hi cyber, I would like to ask some questions:

Did you use both headtracking and wii mote aiming by simulating the mouse? did you meet any conflict by doing so?

Have you tried to substitute wii mote and ps move with Razer Hydra for this set up? and the last question is Wouldn't it be cooler to use Wii Zapper with wiimote and Nunchuk for controller? :)

sorry for asking so much questions but I hope you can answer them :)

  • @lotusbubu The software I wrote handles processing the wiimote and headtracker both to do mouse emulation. However it is smart enough to disable the wiimote when the head is moving. So I am able to turn and look around without the wiimote effecting anything.

I also have a Razer Hydra. That device is pretty cool, but it is wired so it can only be used for a stationary setup. Otherwise its pretty cool. I originally was using a nunchuk, but it did not provide as many buttons as the PS Navigator.

  • @lotusbubu The Wii Zapper is not ergonomic. Nintendo gave it a weird shape so that it wouldn't be confused for a real gun, but they forgot a very important lesson: Guns are shaped like guns so that they are easier to shoot things with.

The Razer Hydra is too expensive.

    End of Line.

  • How did you get the wii remote to connect to the y570, I've not been able to figure out how to do it.

  • @Rebelphoenix The Windows default Bluetooth stack sucks, and won't work for the Wiimote. I downloaded the Toshiba Bluetooth stack, and that works a lot better (I think it costs money tho). I also had a conflict with the PS Move (also on bluetooth) so I used a USB bluetooth adapter and that solved the problem.

  • I haven't try using vuzix glasses, but isn't the 1200VR already displayed in 3D? Why you need TriDef?

And where you placed the sensor bar for remote?

  • @eyeenhancer The 1200VR can display 3D with any program that outputs side-by-side 3D. It does come with software to do this, but it only supports about 100 games. The TriDef driver supports a lot more, including Hard Reset. I am not using the Wii sensor bar for this project. I am only using the gyro data from the Motion Plus. It works out pretty well for my purposes.

  • Very Nice!

  • This is amazing! you are truly a pioneer. however, why not add some 5.1 surround headphones to the mix?

  • @yuriythebest Thanks man! The stereo audio on the 1200VR is actually decent. I do have 5.1 headphones, but they are wired so it wouldn't work with the setup. Maybe in the future I can add a wireless 5.1 headset into the mix.

  • @cybereality Forget 5.1, go with 7.1 Surround.

Also, you should try to use Noise-Cancelling Headphones. Yeah, they won't block out all of the sound, but they will still make a huge difference. I am wearing Noise-Cancelling headphones right now. They're from Bose. Got them as a Christmas present.

  • I want to try it!

    Cool work dude!

  • You are a bladerunner! Kool!

  • Great demo - love the use of the 1200 VR!
