I dont know about the 7 or 9 stroke rolls on the hi hats and ride at the end but I liked your use of ghost notes, very effective, Were on the same wavelength
I'm really liking the sampling on this one. Very raw.. reminds of the type of sound on a few of DJ Shadow's tracks. Really digging the groove as well. Nice, man.
OK- thanks for telling me...I was going to say you could throw a pillow inside the bass drum, but this may not be possible/practical if the outer head is attached...if so, then I think you might be able to do or put something on the outer head (to muffle the boom sound more)...I have e-drums now (after having sold my acoustic set within the last few years), so I can't experiment here...anyway, again, it sounded good...
It sounded good...I respect that you might like the "booming" sound to your bass drum - but I thought that adjusting it to a cleaner thud sound could help provide a different dynamic in the overall groove sound...also, I have thought it (perhaps) amazing how using a simple single stroke approach can sound so good just by hitting different pieces (e.g., between hi-hat, snare and ride)...again, it sounded good...keep up the good work...
yo man left hand lead aint boring at all... i dont actually hear it, i hear the ride on the e's and a's... years ago the best drum teacher i ever went to told me to listen to the hip hop producers drum styles. solid advice.
thank you! I understand, why you posted this:-) Excellent blend with ghost strokes and the big drum. Cool playing and entertaining. In other words. No bullshit. Just the real stuff.
I was trying out new things in the practice room.. nothing more, nothing less. I never use a ride this dry when playing with others, and I don't think I've used the coat-on-cymbal trick since this vid, so settle down folks. It is what it is.
Tell me your opinion bout my drumming :) I'd like to have some critisism 'bout it from somebody else than my family and friends. (I've played for a year now and my drum kit is pure suckage, put _I_ think that I've done pretty good progress in my drumming. My friends tell me that aswell.)
I can get the bass and snare part of the fundamental groove down, but once i introduce the hi hat its like my mind wont let me play the hihat and bass separately. My body bugs out and i have to play the bass and hihat note at the same time, i guess its from playing easy noobie beats too much, any idea on how i can stop this?
no its is safe, ill tell you why. cause if you watch the clip again his stickings are always RLRLRLRL,......safe....the only place where he varies this is the hi hat and ride groove near the end.....but he cant play it anyway. this is why its safe and not funky enough....
msuotc3, you had me until the "not funky enough" part at the end. Since when does funky music rely on double paradiddles and the like? Besides a few drummers, which makes up about .0001% of the population, who the hell cares whether it's all single strokes or not? It's about the feel, not the technique.
No....I think he groove is too safe, too nice and pretty, too not soulful...funk has a solid, in your face feel that makes you want to say...damn that's funky....That ain't happen here...I suggest you check out lil larry, mike clark, Aaron "the clock" Murrell, david "fingers" haynes and clyde Stubblefield...then you'll know what I mean
Thanks for the comments. First I'll say Mike Clark is one of my favorite drummers.. I emulate him a lot. But to address your criticism, I would say that funk drumming needs other musicians - a band - to make it come to life. I'm playing a funky pattern, but without the guitarist pushing his rhythm and the keyboardist doing all sorts of syncopations, it becomes hard to create a truly "damn that's funky" feeling. And of course with funk, it's all about the feeling and the soulful sound you create.
Hey dude...I am not trying to hate on ya...just giving you a little of my experience...and really...you don't need band to make funk come alive...you just need to understand where true funk is coming from....like latin...funk is best when it's played a little dirty....keep on drumming!!!
Work on getting the bass drum hits JUST right. I like how it's groovin already, but it suffers from imprecise kick hits... it will really get heads bobbing and asses shaking once you've perfected it.
@Bajsaridinmun You said fuck (edited but still you said it) metal and fast drummers.Yea how deep are you ? Fast drummers can mean jazz, rock, punk, pop, metal, funk, etc. So that right there shows your stupidity.I know I'm wasting my time replying to a 3 year old comment but when I see shit like this it annoys me.Some of the best drummers are metal drummers, don't believe me check the rankings of the drummers that are considered as the best.Beyond genre speed shouldn't matter, slow or fast.
i like, sounds tight man. i hate when kids think they are good because they can pound a lot of drums really fast (like slipknot drummer, fans of that guy swear he is amazing, i think he's OK just really fast-compare him to somebody like steve smith, steve smith's shit sounds better)
Haha, of course it's alright. The number of successful musicians who "went to" Berklee is the same as those who "graduated from" the place.
I left for a bunch of reasons, but the big ones would probably be that I didn't find a private lessons teacher who I truly respected, and the fact that many of the drummers there are wankers who are studying to become great technicians with lots of chops, and not great musicians. They suck, and they all sound the same.
hahahahahahaha. One time at a show there was an older black man watching, and afterwards he approached the bassist and I and said in so many words, "man, that was righteous!" ...to this day it's one of the greatest compliments I've ever gotten haha.
Oh, they're all worked out by now.. it was recorded back in May. Plus, I've gotten a lot more comfortable with that inverted Gadd beat. I'll post a follow-up vid sometime.
