  • 1 aime pas Jeumont !! j'adore ce son belle video ! :)

  • @frankk323 Merci! Le son d'un Jeumont est tellement incroyable!

  • I want this video on my JAM unit.

  • Your vid is a favorite on Slovakia

  • sa c'est l'élément 40 jimagine ... comme sur la video a la station joliette !

  • Its rARE you will hear that noise on the green line, more likely the orange line

  • i probably think that element 40 has to be louder than 41

  • At least I found a MR73 with the Jeumont propulsion...

  • @MrLppa The sound is created by the traction motors, it makes these unique sound frequencies as it collects enough electricity to power up the train.

  • I know Jeumont is the sound produce by the Métro, but what does make that sound?

  • srode it today from lionel groulx to mcgill around 2 it was quiet till mcgill tho

  • Which stop do you have to get off for VIA and Amtrak?

  • @TrainSounds Bonaventure metro station on the Orange Line (Line 2) and then if you want to hear this train you can head to Berri-UQAM or Lionel-Groulx and switch to the Green Line (Line 1).

  • @MysticMTL Or you could get on the green line straight from the railway station...

  • @Gnick The retired Jeumont train is still parked outside at the storage yards, they've gutted it for parts. The other two Jeumont elements are still in service though.

  • @Gnickk Which railway station and at which metro?

  • @sylvie606 Central Station (Gare Centrale) at Bonaventure metro.

  • @sylvie606 Gare Centrale and McGill or Peel metro, in response to MysticMTL who wanted to know how to get there from VIA and Amtrak.

  • @Gnickk I didnt know you could get on VIA or Amtrack from Peel or Mcgill Metro... I knew about bonnaventure and berri-Uqam in fact...

  • @sylvie606 Berri-UQAM is tricky though. It's not a train station, but infact it's only a Bus Terminal, even though they call it "Gare aux Autocars". You can get off at Peel and McGill, but you will have to walk through the Eaton's Centre and Place-Ville-Marie to get to the train station, at Bonaventure you will need to go through Place Bonaventure to get to the train station.

  • @MysticMTL Ohh I get it, you walk through... That is good to know since I happen to work at Square Victoria (bell building .. go figure) , too bad there wasn't a map of Montreal's vast underground! :(

  • @sylvie606 An interesting note, if you look at metro Square Victoria there is a map of the "RESO". And it lets you connect Lucien L'Allier and the Bell Centre to Place-des-Arts and China Town!

They will probably one day connect Place-des-Arts to La Cathedrale, and Place Alexis Nihon to the Centre Bell. And perhaps other various buildings inbetween.

  • @MysticMTL Good to know! I cant wait but no-one knows if I'll be around montreal by then :P

  • Jemonts are very rear. All these years i ride mr-63s and 73s. But only ONCES a Jeumont.

  • @SuperXpress2 Well, there are only 2 Jeumonts sections left. (It used to be a whole 9 car train with 3 elements, 1 is retired and the other two are in service, one is loud and the other is quieter).

  • Sounds like an mr-73 but clearer... Nice.

  • @SuperXpress2 It was the predecessor of the MR-73, they based some of their research for the MR-73 off this train.

  • @SuperXpress2 This was a prototype of the Mr73, built on the MR63 :)

  • well what happened to the element 40?

  • @MrPingypop12 Sadly they never found enough parts to modernize it with the rest of the fleet, and they decided to retire it. It was parked for a while outside behind the metro garage, and one car is used for the Just For Laughs Festival as a restaurant, and the other two are kept for parts to keep the other two Jeumont element sections in service. If you want photos, you can visit my transitfan com transit gallery and search for Jeumont.

  • I rode the MR63 and i don't remember the begining sound as it takes off.

  • That's why I took a video of this one, it's very special, since there are only two trains in Montreal that start up with this sound, and this one is the loudest of the two.

  • @MysticMTL Ok. Its a cool sound.

  • It's an absolutely amazing sound. And it's so hard to imagine that a mechanical harmony such as this just happened by chance!

  • @MysticMTL It's not by chance: there's basically 3 loud notes in that sequence. First one is the base note. Second one is it's fifth, which is the base frequency x 1.5. The third note is the octave, which is the double of the frequency of the first note.

So basically that 1, 1.5, 2 sequence is a power chord, like one you would play on a guitar. No wonder it sounds musical!

  • Nice do you know if the Jeumont will operate friday on the orange or green line?

  • It could operate any day of the week, mostly weekdays though. And it's almost always on the Green Line now. It did appear atleast once on the Orange line to help out during the rebuild of the MR73 cars, and I believe a friend said it was on the Yellow line (since they operate MR63's now). It's all a matter of luck. I usually walk down the stairs to the platform and that's the train that picks me up.

  • I heard unit #79-720 doing it today, i was quite surprised, its was on the orange line

  • @julienjjj 79-720 belongs on the Orange Line. The train in the video is called the Jeumont because it's an older model train (starts with 80 or 81) and makes the same type of sound as the 78 or 79 series of trains on the Orange Line.

  • lol look at the gangsters in front of him

  • @jmlcool33 i think it's the best part of the video

  • @jmlcool33 Gangsters? Or the trend back in 06 :P

  • Nice!

I like that sound when the train starts accelerating :-)

  • The newer trains you just hear the sound. It's hard to show with a video, but this particular train you can FEEL the sound too!

  • That's really cool!

It probably also generates low frequency sound that's felt (but that mic/preamp on the camera doesn't pick it up.)

  • it's because of the electrical circuit, the frequencies of the power does this sound :P XD

  • It always sounds like a trumpet playing a few notes when these things start up

  • They're making new trains for the metro though, but stm said they were wayy more expensive than they though

  • Yeah, they haven't even signed a contract for new trains yet, and when they do it'll take atleast another 5 years before we see any new trains. And these trains will be well over 50 years old by then. They're still reliable, and they've been maintained really well!

  • huh...it was written in the newspaper, they'll be ready before 2013.. i saw pictures of what 'll be and it'll be like.. future steez ya know

  • Yeah, that's what they "want" them to look like. And those were Bombardier sketches. They still haven't even confirmed the price on this project, and it's getting more and more expensive as the years go by. They just finally agreed now that both companies competing for the contract will work together to build these trains, but now the consortium has to design their own model, and it could take even longer.

  • I hope they include a warning chime in the new models.

  • It Is Not CItyRail, why did you post it under CityRail

  • Is it true these trains have tires instead of metal wheels?

  • Yup, they run on rubber tires, but if there is ever a blow out, they have regular metal wheels that come down and contact the metal rail tracks.

  • What a train :P

    Thanks for the reply

  • This is probably why they're still in service 45 years later. They were built so modern for their time back in the 60's and they're still some of the most reliable trains in the world! This one was even a prototype for the 1973 type trains and is still in service with it's original modifications pretty much still intact.

  • So a prototype for the MR-73?

  • Before the MR-73's were made, the CTCUM wanted to test out the new technology on a current train from an MR-63 model to see if it would adapt properly to the existing Montreal metro system. It was full of bugs and flaws throughout the 70's through 90's and was never retrofitted with an automatic controller like the rest of the trains, so it was rarely ever used, so out of all the trains it has the least mileage. In 2002 they rebuilt the entire electrical system, and coupled with older trains.

  • Its all so complicated, haha

  • I've only been to Montréal for one day a few months ago, tried out the metro. Best thing about it was that soothing sound! I found it very welcoming. I could listen to this all day! I thought it was something deliberate, but I thought it was weird considering the sound is made after the doors are closed.

  • I miss riding the Montreal metro. Good video. I miss that peanut smell when the trains pulled out of the stations. :)

  • Oh boy that's a smell that they should put in an aerosol can! The mechanics though have fine tuned the braking on these trains so they don't smell as much in automatic mode, but believe me when the driver switches over to manual control, that's when you get the full effect of the peanut flavoured brake pads!

  • 1) Yes, the Métro brakes are bathed in peanut oil, and the brake pads are of walnut, so what you smell during braking is sweet!

    2) The sound of the electronic ''hacheur'' or ''hacker'' is designed to prevent motor burn-out during electric power-up. The sound is also musically perfect: The second tone is a perfect fifth followed by an octave - that is why it sounds pleasing to the human ear!

    -Tony in Montréal

  • Actually the pad are made of Yellow Oak and the electric circuitry of MR-74 (and a lone experiemental MR-63) is called a Chopper

  • malheureusement pas .. le troisieme jeumont a été démentalé pour les pieces parce que c,est lui qu'ils ont utilisé sur Ontario pendant Juste pour rire ^^;

  • lol do you know the people who were walking in front of you? the one who had the black jacket with red arms?

  • No, they were complete strangers. I was alone transitfanning that day.

  • ah ok because i'm pretty sure thats my old friend from school. I live a couple blocks away from angrignon so he's usually there a lot.

  • hmmm, well, you never know. It's a small world after all... (as we all join in the refrain).

  • That really is the best of both worlds! If all the choppers sounded like that, I would LOVE the Metro even MORE!

  • This is probably my most favourite video I think I've ever recorded of the metro. The sound of the chopper motor came out so clear I was so glad that it worked!

  • I visited Montreal from New Zealand in August. We caught the Metro heaps, and that sound will always bring back fond memories of great times in Montreal!

  • That musical tone as the train powers up is GREAT but what is the purpose of it? It's obviously not to warn that the doors are closing as they are already closed.

  • That's the sound of the traction motors. It's not normal for them to be installed on this model of train. It was only used for prototype purposes, but they decided to keep this one installed on the 1963 (MR63) train. The 1973 (MR73) trains have similar and quieter sounds on all of that particular model. So the sounds are actually the archs of electricity that run across the traction motors that makes these sounds as the motors are powering up.

  • The purpose is just for show pritty much but I think it also warns people that the train is starting up and moving.

  • Actually it's the sound of the traction motors, and the sound was just a result of the motors powering up. Normally the MR63's have a bumpy startup because their motors have to alternate on and off until they pick up speed as not to rip apart the train cars.

  • Well... It's such and awesome sound do they still have MR63 trains running? I remember them from the last time I rode on the orange line.

  • Yup. I'd say about 98% of the MR63's are still in operation. (Exception would be the one that was in an accident last year, and the fire victim of '72).

  • Oddly enough, if your a music buff, you would recognize the note progression as being exactly the same as Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. Look it up on wiki, they have a free recording.

  • i am a TOUDOUDOUUUUUU lover.

  • Cool! Do you know which cab numbers these are? They're probably 79-something, eh?

  • !!!MT0603!!! This is Montreal not TORONTO!!! It is the power choppers! That is what gives it their sound look it up anywhere and ask any metro enthusiast you have zero idea of what you are saying! Go back to TORRRONTO! Here we chop the electricity and like to hear it play! You stop posting uses less bull!

  • Hey, I am an ex Montreal living in Toronto, so come on man, have some respect. I like the fact I just discovered that MR 63 does that sound, which I will check next time I drive up there. But in TO, if you've been , Subway trains have those DING DANG DONGs before doors close, which really sound nice. So MTL has something and TO has something else that is as good, so come on, no bashing either way.

  • It's just as exciting for me to ride on this train, and I live in Montreal, so don't feel bad! :)

  • Jesus Christ...Calm down, I didn't say anything about Montreal's Metro. All I said is that here in Toronto the choppers on the subways and streetcars make a buzzing noise and that the "Ein eiin eiiin eiiiiin sound on the T1s is made by the traction motor.

  • Ya, that sounds is awesome alright! I wish they all sounded like that.

  • This video has to be up there with one of my top 10 sightings of all time!

  • Why is it that 5 notes are played from the traction motor and not 3? Normally it is one sustained note, then two quick notes. Here it is 5 distinct notes! Why?

  • Like I was mentioning, this was just a prototype traction motor that was built before the MR73's came into service. So it's sound is slightly different compared to the trains built 10 years later by Bombardier.

  • On top of that, this train that I recorded is a very rare train indeed. This train makes the loudest sound out of any of the other trains in Montreal! It's an original generation train from 1963 with a prototype starter on it that they then later used on the 1973 model trains. I consider it the best of both worlds.

  • I grew up in that City and Never imagined that a train ( MR 63 ) with that sound existed. I have been away for so long and when I saw that I thought they changed the engines instead of simply buying new subway cars. I live in Toronto now and use the subway everyday, so for the power chopping lovers search "H5 Train" and you will be able to hear a 1 note power chopping sound, from Toronto's Hawker H5 trains.

Next time I go to MTL, I'll try to use the subway and see that train.

  • Judging from the people at the other side of the platform, This is the end of the line. The other end is Honoré Beaugrand.

  • Yup, that's exactly right. Everyone has to get out at this stop, and the 2nd driver gets in on the other end and brings the train back over to the loading platform after it finishes changing tracks. This is why the train left the station so slowly, since it was entering the parking and shunting area of the tunnel, and the maximum is 15km/h in those areas.

  • In Toronto the chopper just makes a buzzing noise that you can easily hear in the H5s and the Streetcars (CLRVs and ALRVs). It's hard to notice it on the H6s and the older T1s do it sometime only when braking though.

  • When the T1 accelerates-deccelerates, you can hear it clearly! :) e.g. : type "ttc subway 13" or "ttc subway 11"

  • Stop posting this useless crap, that "ein eeiin eeeiin eeeeeeiiin" sound you hear is the traction motors not the chopper.

  • I don't think so .. it's the sound of the motor..

Current choppers were not used anymore when the T1'S were built

  • Cool, thanks!

  • Man how many MR 63 have the current chopper? Cuz wow I've never heard one do that.

  • Well, at one time there was only one 9-car train, which wasn't used very often since it was rebuilt in 1971. (Before the arrival of the MR73's). The reason it wasn't used very often was that it was considered very unreliable, it only operated in Manual Operation Mode and the batteries constantly failed.

  • So in the last few years the maintenance workers decided to split up the 3x3 elements and sandwich them in the middle of a standard train (with tonnes of adjustments). Now it can operate in Automatic mode. However you can only hear these notes in the middle section of the train, and so far only 2 out of the 3 were brought back into service, and one is much louder than the other.

  • Wow!... On entend super bien le jeumont avec cette vidéo!

  • Yes, I'd assume you were right. Infact, the word "hacheur" translates to "chopper" in which the dictionary describes it as: "3. A device that interrupts an electric current or a beam of radiation."

  • I assume that each note is like a level of current being drawn to avoid surges. (and to avoid blowing out HQ transformers! lol!) Like a CD burner who uses Z-CLV to acheive its maximum writing speed :)

  • There's actually 5 notes on this MR63 if you listen carefully. The MR73's only have 3 normally audible notes and a 4th one if you listen carefully.

  • I heard a 4 note chopper sound. Isn't supposed to be a 3-note chopper sound ???

  • This has got to be one of, if not my favourite MR63! The sound of the MR73 style "hacheur" current really is unique and this train has hardly been used at all through its career, so it's really clean, no scratches, no grafitti and runs very smoothly!
