haha you might but it's alright.

final fantasy is basically a series focused on different groups of people. ex: final fantasy 7 and 8 are totally different from each other and do not go together, and so on until 13. hope that explains it. :D

squall never dies, he almost dies. its a really long story, but basically after defeating Ultimecia he falls back into compressed time and almost dies. Rinoa and his team members believed so much in his existence to the point that it brought squall back into his own time and he lives. quite confusing but a good story. hope that helps. :D
