hmm. listened to both versions, can't really pick a winner. for some reason gabriel's voice just blends better with the accompany, but the song stretches for a bit too long. on the other hand i can't think of a song that uses a pipe organ that i have ever not like, and the goosebumps at the 2min 10 sec mark are just awesome. i guess i enjoy this one for the darker tone , and gabriel's for the dramatic lighter tone. just a great song by any means though

It really isn't at all. People saying it is betray their own complete lack of taste. Peter Gabriel just sings it in a super dramatic gravelly old man hoarse whisper. There are people who think anything sung in that voice is automatically "authentic" and deep and great, and better than any other version of the song. But no - this is the better version of this, just as NIN's original version of Hurt was superior to Johnny Cash's sad old man cover version. You're easily duped is all.
