@lakepage The water to Borax ratio she suggests is not a super saturated solution, so you can should be successful in adding more Borax especially if the water is at boiling temperature of 212 F or close. So try adding more Borax to the water (heat it if necessary) and I'll be you will have success! Hope that helps!
@Marsx4 I let the mixture sit in the garage for a week and we did end up with small crystals on the pipe cleaner. I tried again with 1/2 cup (8 Tbsp) Borax per cup of water and then I did get large crystals overnight. We boiled the water, added the borax, stirred until dissolved and then poured into a jar. We've had even better results by dipping the pipe cleaner into the solution and then sprinkling it with dry borax before putting back in the jar to grow.

A good idea is to add some sewing string between each branch of the flake, making it look more like a snow flake.
