Great old Ian and Sylvia song. I named on of my dogs BLUE because of this song. Ian and Sylvia were a very famouse folk-duo in the 70' great sound. Most of their albums have been re-mastered and are available on Itunes and Amazon. Fantasatic music. They divorced many years ago and each still records solo albums under their names Ian Tyson / Sylvia Fricker. I hope you will listen to some of their timeless music.
In 1968, Amos Garrett began a two-year stint of touring and recording with Canadian duo Ian & Sylvia. Amos Garrett (born November 26, 1941, Detroit, Michigan, USA) is a Juno Award-winning American-born Canadian musician, performer, and author. He holds dual citizenship and was raised in Toronto and Montreal.[1] He is best known for his guitar solo on Maria Muldaur's recording "Midnight at the Oasis".[1]
Absolutely beautiful, as was all of that early stuff that they did. And Vanguard did them proud by keeping their arrangements simple and pure on the first few albums. Not that it takes too much away, but is this lip synced? If not, then the way she's working the single mic on the harmony is just miraculous! I'll bet that it's the studio version. A show like Hootenany just didn't have a sound stage that was that clear and pure, or did they?
i saw him last time he was at harbourfront in toronto, and so strong, better than ever, his voice is amazing. Sylvia is still doing well as part of a popular trio, occasionaly here in toronto, with marie lynn-hammond, and kaitlin rainsford
Well, most of today's singers weren't blessed with the voice Ian Tyson had.....not many can carry a song like this with minimal instrumentation. His voice, I believe, was at its best when he was in his 50's and into his 60's....incredible!
Old Blue is one of the very best I have heard in my life, and I'm 67. Ian & Sylvia were up with the best vocalists of the time. Young singers should take a look at their style - "singable" and beautiful lyrics. Songs one can remmember for a lifetime. Who remembers the idiocy of "acid rock" or "heavy metal?" I don't. But I do very well remember the words and music of Old Blue, music of Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, etc. etc. etc.
@mochompy have you heard Paul Ott sing old blue? i have a 45 of him singing this song and its probably one of my most prized possessions. i really should warm up the record player and record it before its too late. i used to play that song all the time when i was a kid.
I remember seeing this episode of Hootenanny, they were great then, and even better when I saw them live in 1972 at the old Cellar Door in Washington DC - WOW!! What a trip this is!!! Thanks for posting!!!
wow....I had forgotten about these two....what was the relationship between these two, brother and sister, boy and girl friend....or strictly business
You are correct that there are 2 verses missing from the way it was recorded on their 1st album. However, this clip from the 1960's TV show "Hootenanny" is complete as broadcast. The duo was asked to cut 2 verses for time constraints for the broadcast. This clip has not been altered or edited by me since it was posted on 2-21-2007.
Been watching/listening to this for almost a year & didn't realize that they cut 2 verses 'till I got a set of the old Vanguard stuff. Makes it even sadder - and prettier.
Oh Boy! This is great! My brother and I would watch Hootenany here in the U.S. and they were our favs. Her beautiful long dark hair and he with his strong male stance. Wonderful strong voices. Thanks for this! Wow!
Just say "Old Blue"...I went to Georgetown U. (class of '65) and worked the famous Cellar Door from 1962-1965. Got to know Ian very very well [he gave me the name "Animal"...long story]. anyone see or writes him say the "Animal" got happly married and old...65 in 2 weeks...but remembers deeply the good times we had, unusual as it was. John Ondrick
Have loved this song for so long. My neighbor had a dog named Blue, a Wolf hybrid, and when I would sit on the porch and sing it, she would sing and howl along with me!
this is about the coolest one yet of Ian and Sylvia, I love it brings back many wonderful memories, a very special friend and I years ago sang in a folk group together and did that song, and now we sing it again, just very exciting seeing it. again and there other old ones they will always be our idols
I'd love to hear your version. I seem to be collecting them on my YouTube playlists! Didja listen to the Greenwood Sidie-O video? Superb! So nostalgic.

Lucky You! would have been great. i am not old enough, i was just born in that era, but being canadian, i've been lucky to see them both 'live' separately several times, both excelleent, and treasures.
Oh Sweet luck that I came on here to play 18 inches of rain, hey Shirley, you are my hero, though not a member, I have played my Ian tapes till they wore out, now on to the CDs. I have seen him at McMaster with Sylvia, Hamilton Place and most recently nov. at the Corktown in Hamilton. I have a picture framed of Ian and I in the lobby. It is my most prized treasure. Love him, love Alberta, love being an old cowgirl in rural Ontario.
@Rainy55 I saw them at Mac too. Probably the mid sixties. I first saw them at a street dance in Orillia in 1961. The York County Boys were playing and Big John McManaman (sp?) spotted them in the audience and asked them to come up and sing a song. They did Wildwood Flower, the only time I've ever heard them do that song. The next day I saw them on stage at the first Mariposa Folk Festival. They were accompanied by Eric Hoard. Does anyone have any video with Eric?
1965? Thanks for this. Ian Tyson and Silvia Fricker are very under-appreciated for what they did and for the artists they helped get started (Lightfoot, Mitchell, We Five. . .) 'Glad they never got involved with the politics of the day.
Thanks again! I don't like this one as well as the "Jesus Met the Woman" performance, but it's thrilling to finally see these performances! I'll have to run out & get the Hootenany package. I wish there were more available, especially some of the Great Speckled Bird performances.

i am looking for a video of Sylvia performing this song in the sixties, wich was in 1966 a big hit in Europe for Crispian St Peters.
But Ian and Sylvia are unknown here in Holland...
Has someone a video of the WE FIVE in 1965 with this song wich reached nr 1 in the USA ?
I do not know this band and they had no hits in my country, unknown why .
