If you look carefully - there are some hands up to control the lines. Depower must work fine, since the wing seems quite big in relation to the small ground station. Impressive are the low clearance to the ground and the obstacles all around. This video is of 2008. Wonder what is the current status of the project from Festo. About energy generation found some hints on the page of aeroix - which seem to have developped this marvellous piece of engineering together with Festo.
it looks like a nasa wing, but with chambers (google it) and that kite was original designed to soften landings of whatever nasa needed to bring down. why not show of with something like a flexifoil blade v, that is much more controllable and steady during air-pockets but still got a lot of lift.
would love to see festo do something like the kenetic sculptures by theo jansen,
yeah i don't see the point of this. I mean, it is their money and their time they used to make this thing but i can't really imagine a practical use for this other than on super tankers.
They use the kite to produce electricity. As the kite pulls the string out from the spools it spins a generator. When it gets to its full reach the kite is adjusted to catch less air and reeled in. Then it adjust back to its original resistance.
That is a very impressive ground station! The kite itself reminds me of the prospective concepts stingray ultralight aircraft. low aspect ratio and very light weight. What are the kite's depower capabilities?
These (well not FESTO's per-se, but other companys') robot controlled kites are already pulling container ships. And there's plans to use a lot of them together on land to fly in circles and produce a lot of power (much more power than traditional windfarms)
It's no good, I like all these Festo robotic creations!

Can a version of this lift up the back end of my kite?

ELuhn, they're going to dynamically soar these kites? Interesting.

whats the point? spent all that time and money flying a kite...seems it would be more fun in the hands of a humanoid,no ?

It can be used to control electricity producing kites,

they use this to advertise parts they make. this showcases response time and coordination.

wouldn't the energy needed to reel the kite in be just as much (if not more) than the energy generated???
vosa135 2 years ago
The kite changes shape when being pulled in. It decreases the amount of wind it catches. Making it easier to reel in.
