who started punk is really not the issue..it like a wave that came as the UK citizens were getting fed up with the inequality between the rich blue bloods and poor and the absurdity of the Royals while the country were in a state of financial depression...its like asking which droplet of a tidal wave was the first hitting the shore....it all hit pretty much as the same time....
The Clash are in their own category. They should just have a section all to their own in music shops. They transcended all labels. LONG LIVE THE CLASH!
For those of us old enough to remember popping tapes because they got played too much, I think I'm close to popping this video. LOL! It's not often you hear a perfect song, one that's not long enough, leaves you wishing for more and as soon as the song starts you can't wait to start it over.
I cant believe this album is 33 years old. How relevant is this music now. No artist today could pull this off. Go back 33 years from 79 1946 / music changed a whole hell of alot from 46 to 79 / and music from 79 to 12 not so much / most of it is stolen by todays artists
@treesloth9 You make a good point mate. In my opinion music has stagnated, the record companies have saturated the industry with their own self promoted crap i.e. the whole X-Factor behemoth.
the clash is influenced from passion other types of music and the love of just all around playing music i know joe strummer loved what he did with writing music and playing it..obviously tho
it has alot of influences but its about the message the sex pistols and other bands had the punk look and played a little heavier but the clash was more defined
clash is not punk? yeah cause the real punk rock bands are good charlotte, green day and blink 182 right? stupid tit .clash is and will always be TRUE punk rock, and whatever whiny emo rock you listen too is just a disgrace to the genre.(not that I think those bands are even a part of the genre but apparently people do think that)
@Shinzu92 Great fucking point. Genres don't matter when you're talking about the Clash. The Clash stand on their own. In my opinion there is two generes, The Clash and everything else.
@vernin822 im 21 and hes a brilliant unique individual with an awesome outlook on everything awesome musician bit before my time but i love almost everything he has done with the 101'ers the clash the maglinoies etc
Punk is just not giving a shit about what people think its a philosophy in my opinion, and clearly if your trying to label music punk or not, your sir are no punk.
Sorry to go on and on with this, but music - and its history - is something I'm passionate about. To suggest the London Calling album was not punk is just absurd. Re: anti establishmentism - previously I referred to the band's name, but how about the line "London calling to the far away towns; a war is declared and battle come down..." Think, as I previously wrote, but perhaps more importantly, educate yourself - have a look at their wiki page, and most important: just enjoy the music!
so not punk...cmon people youve heard punk before...this is just music..maybe a lil ska before ska was cool but for sure not punk. It is just great music...
I know I should leave it at that, but I just can't.
Punk is not about what you "hear." There's a hell of a lot more to it than that - and I'm not referring to "styles," or mohawks or any of the other window dressing bullshit.
Not punk? It was PURE PUNK at its root and to the core!
No offence, but with all due respect, you simply don't know what punk is. (I guess ya had to be there)
this album is so random and ranges with so many sounds....i cant really label it as punk because for me punk is and always will be sex pistols....this was reggae, rock, pop, yeah and "punk"....they were doing something else...amazing....
@dialblova Protspeck is on the mark. This is as punk as it gets. The Ramones invented it (well, actually Iggy started the concept), the Pistols took it to the UK, and the Clash refined it. True, they had a reggae influence, but punk wasnt a sound or style - it was about doing your own thing. Or more precisely put - anti establishment, and more importantly - anti commercialization of music. Even their name - the-Clash... think about it.
@pgpapas British punk as many people would probably agree was started by the sex pistols who said themselves tat they were style over substance. Punk was about style, one which the clash stuck too aesthetically it was never about the sound it was more about the spirit which the clash carried more thanmany other "punk" bands and this album inparticular has a lot more of a pop influence than most would like to admit but its fairly obvious considering joe's background in the 101ers
who started punk is really not the issue..it like a wave that came as the UK citizens were getting fed up with the inequality between the rich blue bloods and poor and the absurdity of the Royals while the country were in a state of financial depression...its like asking which droplet of a tidal wave was the first hitting the shore....it all hit pretty much as the same time....
