Persecution mostly. Just prior to WW! there was an influx of Jews back to the region. Now I'll have to do a bit more research to get my dates right but basically the coastal region was a shit hole. The returning jews set up irrigation and farming and a working port. There were off and on again conflicts that had since the early 1800's pushed jews up into Europe. Basically though, they left hostile regions for areas that were more accommodating to their businesses and prosperity.

@Sievn: Bullshit, child abuse cases in the catholic church were isolated incidents committed by certain individual priest in the past. Catholic teachings don't condone such things anywhere, and all catholics agree that it's a crime, and are ashamed that such things happened.
In Islam, on the other hand, child abuse is something the founder of the religion (Mohammed) himself did, and condoned in his teachings (Quran). And Muslims don't seem to be very ashamed about it...

Well, I lived in several Western countries, and I never came across any cases of child abuse in my personal surroundings either. The only ones I ever heard about were the ones that were reported by the media.
In Muslim countries, the Media simply doesn't report them, and the victim's families keep quiet to protect their "honor". But Human Rights Organizations still uncover many cases and report about them.
