I just got back from Osaka and did not notice anyone staring at me. I have heard before going that they would, assuming that I was going to commit a crime because I am a white foreigner. I did experience 'racism' on the subway though. There was some old dude that rudely refused to set by me even though the only seat left was the one next to me. The classic 'gaijin seat' thing. Other than that, I had no incidents and people were pretty nice.
generally they say foreigners, the underlying meaning refers to ethnic groups such as the chinese, filipinos, other southeast asians......do you know that? this sterotype is far more promient that foreigners such as 'whites', 'blacks' and latins. So when they foreigners, they are more likely saying chinese, filipinos etc...
If you are gonna do drugs in Japan get the hard drugs from the Mafia. Herion, Pot, Coke, Meth you will get the same jail sentence. If you are just a user up to 5 years in prison for a small amount. Drug laws are messed up here not to say they are messed up in the states also. You can buy codeine over the counter here though it is in about 80 percent of their cold medications.
2.9 out of 1000 japanese commit crime in japan, only 1.3 out of 1000 foreigners in japan commit crime, so foreigners commit LESS crime then japanese people in japan! Only 0.2 out of 1000 British, USA or Korean foreigners in japan commit crime in japan. Only Chinese and Brazilians in Japan commit more crime per person then japanese (4.3 and 3.5 out of 1000)
Right about that, that some people do ruin it for other foreigners especially those who are loud and are behaving like complete idiots. I saw this video if this Aussie guy while ago that he was drunk talking to his buddies and literally when a trash truck being there he decided to throw a bicycle in front of it. At least the trash man guy put him in his place.
This is simply normal ethnocentric behavior of every country. The news media in the United States are extremely guilty of highlighting crimes committed by illegal immigrants also.
one question, how are the living standards? I know that it is very small and expensive to live there especially in the big cities, but, is it quiet? can I live in a flat and play the guitar at 12 oclock at night and be cool? or is everything paperthin walls in japan like at home where I live?
The Japanese have every reason to hate foreigners. I am Norwegian and our culture has social mores and tastes which are much closer to those of Japan than those of America. We also view Americans as loud, violent, undisciplined and rude. Our culture is also emotionally restrained; and, like Japan, our nation is incredibly wealthy, and nearly devoid of violent crime. Why are Japan and Norway such prosperous, peaceful and orderly societies? GENETICS! We are thoroughbred societies.
@yasashii89 Norway's population is only about 3% non-native Norwegian, compared to the United States15% illegal alien population which has arrived within the last 20 years.
This kind of rigid conservatism is exactly why japan is not a creatively inspired nation. They merely elaborate on the technologies and ideas supplied by the west. If they opened up they probably wouldn't be so efficient, but in the end, happier and more innovative.
The Japanese commit far more crime than the military there - it just doesn't make the news. The JGSDF commits lots of sexual assaults, for example - even robberies, as do the Okinawans, themselves... it just doesn't make for good news, though, compared to an American or a military guy committing a crime. Don't get me wrong; I'm one of the biggest supporters of the Uchinaan-chu - I just see mainland Japan and Japanese as being a far worse enemy and a bigger problem than the Americans.
yes, multiculturalism is a very poor explanation for crime, i have been to okinawa and it has a low crime rate that is supported by both the japanese and usa troops.
the low japanses crime rate can be explained by its group solidarity and most foerigners adapt to the values and norms of these groups. because of the rise in consumerism, and relative deprivation, etc in japan; japan is looking for an excuse for its increased crime rate by scapegoating foreign people.
I live in the netherlands, and when you read the newspaper here or watch tv, and some crime is commited they would say it's a foreigner, or turkish or morrocan or black person or something. But i can't immagine that the dutch people here aren't the same. There are bad people everywhere, but they just say that they are foreigners so it's more spectaculair or something ...
that and they don't want to believe that their own people do it. so they keep the illusion of how good their people are it makes it better news for some reason Japan should be focusing about helping other countries like China sent people to Haiti to search and rescue
Hey have you ever checked crime statistics in Japan? Off course, the population of Japanese is far bigger than foreign people, therefore the number of crime commited by Japaese is bigger. However, foreign people, especially chinese and Korean, brazilian commit far more crime than Japanese in percentage term. These crime are often brutal. I am not saying all the foreigners are like this...
i love her voice and her accent.she's cute too. japan is a pretty insular place-it's an island after all. society is very insular, yet modern, a contradiction in terms almost.
I really like your videos alot!, but one time when i got on a train i saw a a few girls at different times get groped on the train. So i did something smart(by my standerds) but got looked down on(i think). I helped them when i saw that happend, like i said hey wat up(i did not know any of the girls at all by the way) and said sryy i'm late come on over here. And the old men or guys got mad and stared at me all angry like. But i didn't care at all, the girls were so happy that i helped them.
I've heard alot of this happens, but I never hear that the girls tell these men to stop touching them. Why don't they say something if they have a problem?
The Girls Don't say anything since the japanese(no offence to them) are pretty stubborn and they don't say anything since they don't want to be the center of "bad" attention. And their parents do that also. I've seen it before since i was in japan for a while and one of my friends school just says "don't worrie about it, it happens ALL THE TIME" I was so pissed off when i heard that from the school and one of the parents of one of my friends even said that. It's pretty sad but thats the bad only
I stumbled on your Being Hispanic video and it led me here. Pretty funny I must say.
I don't really care for modern Japanese culture but I was planning to take a trip there out of it and enjoy the different scenery quitely. I decided on not going through with this after watching this video.

yeah, this video was made before Kellogs dropped his endorsement, however, such a 'light' punishment would never happen in Japan. Some famous sumo wrestler's have gotten lifetime bans just for testing positive for use
Glad to hear your honest perspectives on Japan. At one time I was on of those who had them up on a pedestal. I'm still learning about their culture, both good and bad. It seems it's mostly the good stuff that attracts you and sticks out first. The bad stuff becomes discovered by those living there, or even more to those involved in a relationship with a Japanese. Years, even decades into a relationship, you will be amazed by how much they can be hiding and how many secrets they have witheld.
Just in case you can't manage google: wiki: Penalties for possession or use of marijuana in Japan are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and fines.[18] Possession of any amount, as little as 0.1 g, is punishable by jail sentence for up to 5 years and/or a fine of up to 30,000,000 Yen.
Jail in Japan is no joke from people I have talked to who have been there. From what I have read and heard as well, the penalties for possession are serious as well. Although that could be the only thing ..
A guest? If you ask me Japan is becoming more and more westernized by the day. Japan is becoming a puppet of western culture, and it's sad. I love this country, but mostly for its old ways. Of course some things are a necesity to compete as a global power, and strive as an economy but I think it's sad how Japan is forgetting a lot of its old traditions.
She was in no way "dissing" (what are we, 10?) your country. She was starting the truth, which yes hurts sometimes.
A few things to point out, anyone that's a role model to little children that don't know right or wrong should keep him/herself clean. And on the other topics, news medias are bias to gain ratings. Like in the US, all i hear are alleged massacres and a lot of casualties, none mentioning a marine being awarded the silver cross. And a couple foreigners are dicks. In Hong Kong, they act all "dirty place" and pretty much abhor everything. And some hits on the local girls, but that's everywhere.
But this is for your other video, you should have learned the japanese language before going there. It's like that japanese person who goes to mexico and the only thing he knows how to order is a torta.
Maybe, but learning Japanese is very difficult. Almost every foreigner I know hadn't learned Japanese until they'd been here for 4-5 years. It's way easier learning it here than from an English-speaking country.
true. but if you take classes for 4 to 5 years before it would be easier. but you werent planning that far ahead so. not trying to be rude though. dont take it the wrong way. 1 question, have you seen a taco bell?
