The Fitzgerald lies in Canadian waters. If you want to fight them over the wreck, you must claim olgebay never gave it up hence the Fitzgerald is under our control
@totaldramailand1 Oh, so you suppose Lake Ontario is a US Lake? Look at the name FFS. And since the Fitz is in our part of Lake Superior, it is under our juristiction and rules.
BTW Snakes, the SS Kamloops sank in 1927 on December 7th. There are even stories that 7 or 6 men escaped the ship and starved while trying to get help. I also read about a man who is nicknamed whitey who is still in the engine room of the ship to this date, perfectly preserved with the wedding ring still on. Spooky!
This one brings back memories. Wonderful video & fab music.
All snakes' videos are so touching, educational, relevant. They make history live, especially for me. You rule, snakes3425 !
Absolutely. You bring these wrecks into sharp focus for all who love the lakes, the seas, and history. Probably into focus too for those who never gave this part of history & life a second thought.
Ive seen the damage done to those two life boats the storm washed ashore. It sent an icy feeling down my entire body. Just seeing the steel being pulled back and fucked up just as if it were fuckin tinfoil. And the one that got halved, it tells ya how bad these storms and lakes really are.
@geversonsr Hi there. I just watched the one in the Video Responses (above) and they said there were 19 ships destroyed and more than 250 people killed. They have a list of the lost ships in the description. Peace.
there rly arent the biggest fresh water bodies cuz africas 1st lakes i the worlds lakes are huge there home to the milloins of speceis of fresh water fish
In fact if you tally up the number of ships lost since sailing began on the Lakes, you'll find more than 10,000 ships have been lost on them. A number rivaling the North Atlantic Ocean.
Many of these ships are simular in appearance and maybe design. The waves get big enough to leave a section in the middle unsupported, hence these heavily loaded ships break in two. This is the best theory I've heard of.
Good video! People don't realize how deadly the Great Lakes ( I would know since I live in Michigan which is surrounded by all 5 of the Great Lakes) are and how many lives were lost in shipwrecks
The great lakes are a dangerous place. My uncle does the lake superior jump all the time. He says hes seen storms that cant be mimic'd even in the salt water oceans. Rouge waves that can eat a carrier alive....These sailors have balls of steel.
Go to, h(double t)p(colon back slash x2)seagrant(dot)wisc(dot)edu(backslash)CoastalHazards(backslash)Default(dot)aspx(question mark)tabid(equal sign)409
Browse around at this site & you will see a 20ft.+ wall/wave of vertical white water neairng the lighthouse at the Duluth ship channel.
The two I recall are the Edmund Fitzgerald, and the Lady Elgin. If you include the Chicago River with the Great Lakes the Eastland would be the worst disaster on them, not the Lady Elgin.
My father was on the SS EMPEROR that tragic night. He was one of the survivors pulled from the water by the coast guard. He was barely alive when they did.He tells me that the captain was drunk all the time.
Are you talking about 1975 being the last major sinking on the Great Lakes? A rogue wave also got the MS Munchen in 1978, but that was on the ocean. And a couple of cruise liners have been hit by them recently. They took out the bridge and disabled the ship for a few minutes before they got back on track.
I'd already used the Fitzgerald in a previous Lost Ships video, namely Lost Ships I. I try not to use ships that appeared in a previous lost ships video twice
Ha, that proves my point even more. The shallower the body of water, usually the more tumultuous it can become. IMO, that lends itself to more rogue waves...which has been speculated as what got the Edmund.
Very true. The wave energy goes up in shallower water. A large ground swell you are riding comfortably on the ocean tends to become a ship wrecker as it reaches the shallows off a land mass.
@RMBmike They wouldn't. AT ALL. Ala Perfect storm sinking scene... The last major sinking was 1975, but with all the new technology now, you'd have to screw up PRETTY bad in order to sink, or it'd have to be THE MOST PERFECT storm.
I read in my Great lakes shipwreck book, The survivor of the Morrel said that him and a couple other were in a lifeboat, and after the Morrel broke in half, they said it was a disturbing site when they saw the stern half of the Morrel still"steaming away"
Was a crew menber that got left by Sundew.joined search the next day on 30 ft boat from gull island.recovered 5 that day god bless them all. Sam malott sundew 58-60 68-70
I have always put all my thoughts into the edmund fitzgerald and the arthur anderson. I never realized how many lives were lost in the great lakes until now>
The Morrell was long past her prime, at the time of her loss, she was 60 years old, and should've been retired.
Ironically the Morrell's sister ship, the SS Edward Y. Townsed, sank while being towed to the scrap yard, and now lies in the same area as the RMS Titanic
Very Good! Ever hear that the Same Storm that caused the Morrel to sink caused its sister ship the Edward Y. Townsend to have a crack in its hull which would later cause it to sink in tow to Europe!
Well don't we have the same timing...A few days ago,I ran across a few websites about Ghost ships! And here you go and post this a few days later. Kinda freaky!!
The sites I went to had a few of these ships. I read about the Emperor too.
As always, great video! I'm glad you included the Christmas tree ship. And I love the picture you showed of it. I absolutely love old ships with massive sails.
the christmas trees she was carrying are still inside the wreck there's an urban legend that there was no christmas in Chicago during 1912 due to the storm that sank the Simmons there's a theory that the Christmas Trees helped doom the schooner, she had as many as 5000 trees on board at the time of her loss, which was more then she was designed for and the combined weight of the trees, ice from the storm was too much for the 44 year old ship to stand, and she sank bow first
The same could almost be said for the Kamloops. Divers who have ventured into her engine room reportedly encountered an apparition nicknamed "Grandpa" or "Whitey" on account of it's ghostly white appearance. IMO, it's probably an urban legend.
